Abstract

Medical devices and methods for delivery or implantation of prostheses within hollow body organs and vessels or other luminal anatomy are disclosed. The subject technologies may be used in the treatment of atherosclerosis in stenting procedures or be used in variety of other procedures. The systems may employ a self expanding stent restrained by one or more members released by an electrolytically erodable latch. Such release means do not connect directly to the implant, though one or more portions may contact it.

39. A stent delivery system comprising:

an elongate body;

a stent comprising a near end, a far end and a structure extending therebetween;

at least one of the near and far end of the stent connected to the elongate body by an electrically conductive segment of material passing through the end, each segment comprising at least one electrolytically erodable section spaced away from the stent.

40. The system of claim 39, wherein the segment of material is in the form of a loop.

41. The system of claim 40, wherein each loop of material is a wire or a ribbon.

42. The system of claim 39, wherein each loop is made of a first metal and at least a portion of the remainder of each electrically conductive material is made of a second metal, wherein the first metal is less noble than the second metal.

43. The system of claim 39, wherein each electrolytically erodable section comprises solder.

44. The system of claim 39, further comprising a slidably actuatable tubular restraint over at least a portion of the stent.

45. The system of claim 44, wherein only one of the near and far ends of the stent is held by a wire.

46. The system of claim 39 or 45, wherein the stent is twisted.

47. The system of claim 46, wherein a plurality of segments holds the near or far end of the stent.

48. The system of claim 39, wherein the elongate member is electrically conductive and covered with an insulating layer.

49. The system of claim 39, wherein both ends of the stent are connected to the elongate body by at least one segment each.

50. The system of claim 49, wherein the near and far erodable sections are electrically isolated from each other.

51. The system of claim 49, wherein the near and far erodable sections are not electrically isolated from one another.

52. The system of claim 51, wherein the erodable sections are made of different materials.

53. The system of claim 51, wherein the erodable sections are made of the same material and have different volumes.

54. The system of claim 39, wherein the at least one erodable section is exposed and the remainder of the segment is insulated.

55. The system of claim 39, wherein crowns at the at least one end of the stent connected to the elongate body define an aperture to receive the loop.

56. The system of claim 39, wherein the segment of material is made of wire about 0.001 inch in diameter, and wherein all but the at least one erodable section is covered with an insulating material or a protective metal.

57. The system of claim 56, wherein the at least one erodable section is about a 0.005 inch long.

58. A method of loading a self-expanding stent onto a delivery guide, the method comprising:

providing the delivery guide and the stent; and

passing an electrically conductive segment of material having an electrolytically erodable section through at least one of a near end and a far end of the stent.

59. A stent delivery system made by a process comprising the acts of:

providing a stent comprising a near end and a far end; and

mounting the stent to a delivery guide by passing at least one segment of electrolytically releasable material through at least one of the near end and the far end of the stent.

60. The process of claim 59, further comprising rotating one end of the stent relative to the other end of the stent wherein the stent, thereby mounting the stent in a twisted configuration.

61. A stent delivery method comprising:

introducing a delivery guide having a stent held in a reduced diameter thereon at least partially by a segment of material having at least one electrolytically releasable portion, the segment being passed through at least one of a near end and a far end of the stent; and

applying a voltage to release the segment to erode and release the end of the segment to release the stent.
