Abstract

Systems and methods for enabling data messaging in a wireless communications system is provided in one embodiment. Wireless messaging is enabled by having a host service send enable messages to a mobile communications device. Once an enable message has been received at the mobile communications device, the generation of an event causes the mobile communications device to send a fetch message to the host service to retrieve messages.

Claims

1. A method for wireless messaging, the method comprising:

receiving an enable message using a communication channel;

generating an event, the event being independent of said receiving of said enable message; and

in response to said event, requesting a data message by sending a fetch message using the communication channel.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein the data message is an email message.

3. The method of claim 1 further comprising the step of receiving the data message over the communication channel.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein the step of receiving further comprises setting an enable flag representative of the enable message received.

5. The method of claim 1 wherein the communication channel is a data channel.

6. The method of claim 1 wherein said enable message is received from a host service and wherein said fetch message is sent to the host service.

7. The method of claim 1 wherein said enable message is received from an email management engine and wherein said fetch message is sent to the email management engine.

8. The method of claim 1 wherein the event is one of a user generated event or a device generated event.

9. The method of claim 8 wherein the user generated event is one of entering an email service, rolling an input wheel, entering a keystroke, commencing a logged in session, maintaining an active logged in session or executing a predetermined input.

10. The method of claim 8 wherein the device generated event is one of expiry of a timer, a keep alive ping or initiation of a communication channel session.

11. The method of claim 1 wherein the steps of receiving, generating and requesting are executed in a mobile communications device.

12. The method of claim 11 wherein the event is removal of the mobile communications device from a holster

13. The method of claim 1 wherein said enable message comprises at least one identifier of the data message or no identifier of the data message.

14. The method of claim 13 wherein said step of receiving further comprises storing said at least one identifier.

15. The method of claim 1 wherein the steps of generating and requesting are executed during a logged in session.

16. A method for wireless messaging, the method comprising:

providing at least one data message;

upon said providing of said at least one data message, sending an enable message using a communication channel;

receiving a fetch message in response to the enable message using the communication channel; and

in response to said fetch message, sending the at least one data message using the communication channel.

17. The method of claim 16 wherein the enable message contains an identifier of the at least one data message.

18. The method of claim 16 wherein only one enable message is sent prior to receiving the fetch message.

19. The method of claim 16 wherein the step of sending the at least one data message using the communication channel comprises:

opening a time frame in response to said fetch message;

while the time frame is opened;

i) sending the at least one data message using the communication channel;

ii) providing at least one other data message; and

iii) sending the at least one other data message using the communication channel; and

closing the time frame.

20. The method of claim 16 wherein said method is executed in a host service.

21. The method of claim 16 wherein said at least one data message is an email message.

22. The method of claim 16 wherein said providing includes providing said at least one data message from an external server.

23. The method of claim 22 wherein said external server is an email server and said at least one data message is an email message.

24. The method of claim 23 wherein said email server is one of a Microsoft Exchange server, a Lotus Domino server, a Novell GroupWise server, an IMAP server, a POP server or a webmail server.

25. The method of claim 16 wherein said method is executed in an email management engine.

26. The method of claim 25 wherein said step of providing at least one message comprises:

providing a first data message from a first email account; and

providing a second data message from a second email account.

27. A mobile communications device adapted for wireless messaging over a communication channel, the mobile communications device comprising:

a communication module adapted to receive an enable message transmitted over the communication channel; and

an event generator adapted to generate an event independently of the enable message received;

wherein the communications module is further adapted to send, in response to the event generated, a fetch request over the communication channel.

28. The mobile communications device of claim 27 wherein said event generator is further adapted to only generate an event if said enable message has been received.

29. The mobile communications device of claim 27 wherein the communication module is further adapted to receive at least one data message over the communication channel as a result of said fetch request.

30. The mobile communications device of claim 29 wherein the at least one data message is an email message.

31. The mobile communications device of claim 27 further comprising a flag wherein said communication module is further adapted to set the flag to represent receipt of the enable message received.

32. The mobile communications device of claim 31 wherein said enable message includes a message identifier.

33. The mobile communications device of claim 32 wherein said fetch request includes said message identifier.

34. The mobile communications device of claim 27 wherein the generated event is one of entering an email service, rolling an input wheel, entering a keystroke, commencing a logged in session, maintaining an active logged in session or executing a predetermined input.

35. A host service adapted for wireless messaging over a communication channel, the host service comprising:

a messaging module adapted to provide at least one data message and to send an enable message over the communication channel in response to the at least one data message provided;

wherein the messaging module is further adapted to receive, in response to the enable message sent, a fetch message over the communication channel and to send the at least one data message over the communication channel in response to the fetch message received.

36. The host service of claim 35 wherein the at least one data message provided is received from an external server.

37. The host service of claim 35 wherein said at least one data message is an email message.

38. The host service of claim 35 wherein said messaging module is adapted to send only one enable message before said fetch message is received.

39. The host service of claim 35 wherein upon receipt of said fetch message, said messaging module is adapted to open a time frame, during the time frame the messaging module is adapted to send the at least one data message, to provide at least one other data message and to send the at least one other data message using the communication channel, and the messaging module is further adapted to close the time frame.

40. The host service of claim 35 wherein said enable message is sent to a mobile communications device.

41. The host service of claim 35 wherein said fetch message is received from a mobile communications device.

42. The host service of claim 35 wherein said at least one data message is sent to a mobile communications device.
