Abstract

An area of interest can be defined in a content presentation and a clip can be created that contains content associated with the area of interest. The clip can be presented with other clippings in a clipping page where it can be edited by a user. The clipping page can be stored as a web page or other content source, so that the clipping page can be shared with other users. The clippings can be refreshed in accordance with a selectable refresh scheme.

Claims

1. A method comprising:

providing a user interface for presentation on a display device, the user interface including a display area for displaying content;

selecting a portion of content from the display area;

clipping the selected portion of content; and

presenting the clipping in a clipping page.

2. The method of claim 1, where selecting a portion of content from the display area further comprises:

drawing a bounding box around the portion of content to be clipped.

3. The method of claim 1, where presenting the clipping in a clipping page further comprises:

changing the position of the clipping in the clipping page.

4. The method of claim 1, where presenting the clipping in a clipping page further comprises:

determining at least one parameter associated with the clipping;

comparing the parameter with parameters from at least one other clipping presented in the clipping page; and

changing the relative position between the clipping and at least one other clipping based on the results of the comparison.

5. The method of claim 1, where presenting the clipping in a clipping page further comprises:

changing the appearance of the clipping page.

6. The method of claim 1, where presenting the clipping in a clipping page further comprises:

changing the appearance of clippings in the clipping page.

7. The method of claim 6, where changing the appearance of clippings includes:

subjecting the clipping to geometric transformations.

8. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

encoding parameters associated with the clipping with the clipping page.

9. The method of claim 8, further comprising:

storing the clipping page.

10. The method of claim 8, where the parameters include a content source and an area of interest associated with the clipping, the content source describing the origin of the content in the display area, the area of interest describing the selected portion of content.

11. A method comprising:

receiving an encoded clipping page, the encoded clipping page describing a content source and an area of interest;

clipping a first portion of content accessed from the content source, the first portion being based on the area of interest; and

presenting the first portion of content as a clipping in a clipping page.

12. The method of claim 11, where presenting the clipping in a clipping page further comprises:

receiving input directed to the clipping, the input operable to change the position of the clipping in the clipping page.

13. The method of claim 11, where presenting the clipping in a clipping page further comprises:

changing the appearance of the clipping page.

14. The method of claim 11, where the clipping is operable to cause performance of displaying all content from the content source.

15. The method of claim 11, where receiving an encoded clipping page, further comprises:

receiving actual content.

16. The method of claim 15, where presenting the clipping in a clipping page, further comprises:

presenting the actual content as the clipping in the clipping page.

17. The method of claim 11, further comprising:

clipping a second portion of content accessed from the content source, the second portion being based on the area of interest, the second portion of content being different from the first portion of content; and

presenting the second portion of content as the clipping in the clipping page.

18. The method of claim 17, further comprising:

presenting an indication that the second portion of content is presented rather than the first portion of content.

19. A method comprising:

receiving an encoded clipping page from a first device, the encoded clipping page describing a content source and an area of interest; and

providing the encoded clipping page to a second device, the first device different from the second device.

20. The method of claim 19, further comprising:

rendering the encoded clipping page in a second encoded presentation, the second encoded presentation containing a clipping of a portion of content from the content source, the portion based on the area of interest; and

providing the second encoded presentation page.

21. The method of claim 19, where the encoded clipping page is encoded as a Uniform Resource Locator (URL).

22. The method of claim 19, where the second encoded presentation can be displayed by a Web browser.

23. A method comprising:

receiving a content source, the source being accessible to access content; and

automatically clipping a portion of content accessed from the content source.

24. The method of claim 23, further comprising:

presenting the clipping in a clipping page.

25. The method of claim 23, where receiving a content source, further comprises:

receiving a bookmark associated with a content source.

26. A system comprising:

means for providing a user interface for presentation on a display device, the user interface including a display area for displaying content;

means for selecting a portion of content from the display area;

means for clipping the selected portion of content; and

means for presenting the clipping in a clipping page.

27. A system comprising:

means for receiving an encoded clipping page, the encoded clipping page describing a content source and an area of interest;

means for clipping a first portion of content accessed from the content source, the first portion being based on the area of interest; and

means for presenting the first portion of content as a clipping in a clipping page.

28. A system comprising:

means for receiving an encoded clipping page from a first device, the encoded clipping page describing a content source and an area of interest; and

means for providing the encoded clipping page to a second device, the first device different from the second device.

29. A system comprising:

means for receiving a content source, the source being accessible to access content; and

means for automatically clipping a portion of content accessed from the content source.

30. A computer program product comprising instructions including instructions to cause a computing device to:

provide a user interface for presentation on a display device, the user interface including a display area for displaying content;

select a portion of content from the display area;

clip the selected portion of content; and

present the clipping in a clipping page.

31. A computer program product comprising instructions including instructions to cause a computing device to:

receive an encoded clipping page, the encoded clipping page describing a content source and an area of interest;

clip a first portion of content accessed from the content source, the first portion being based on the area of interest; and

present the first portion of content as a clipping in a clipping page.

32. A computer program product comprising instructions including instructions to cause a computing device to:

receive an encoded clipping page from a first device, the encoded clipping page describing a content source and an area of interest; and

provide the encoded clipping page to a second device, the first device different from the second device.

33. A computer program product comprising instructions including instructions to cause a computing device to:

receive a content source, the source being accessible to access content; and

automatically clip a portion of content accessed from the content source.
