Abstract

A data reader system comprising an optical reader for reading symbol indicia and producing a symbol signal representative of the symbol indicia; a memory device for storing parameter data specific to the optical reader; and a processor for controlling: the optical reader; receiving the symbol signal and interpreting the symbol signal; the processor having memory for storing parameter data specific to the optical reader, wherein the processor is located remotely from the optical reader and memory device.

Claims

1. A data reader comprising:

an optical reader for reading symbol indicia and producing a symbol signal representative of the symbol indicia;

a processor for controlling the optical reader, the processor having memory for storing parameter data specific to the optical reader;

wherein the optical reader and processor are disposed within a common optical reader housing.

2. The data reader in accordance with claim 1, wherein the parameter data is data specific to the optical reader as a result of manufacturing variability.

3. The data reader in accordance with claim 1, wherein the parameter data is data specific to the optical reader as a result of manufacturing configurations.

4. The data reader of claim 1, wherein the parameter data comprises at least one of the following:

aiming pattern offset;

serial number;

image pixel array size;

image orientation;

field illumination flatness;

lens distortion;

pixel defect identification;

light path anomalies;

image sensor anomalies;

noise characterization of the image sensor;

max LED current;

optical reader orientation;

optical reader configuration;

aimer configuration;

lens prescription;

field geometric distortion; and

pin cushioning correction.

5. A data reader in accordance with claim 1, wherein the processor and memory are provided on the same integrated circuit package.

6. A data reader in accordance with claim 1, wherein the optical reader is comprised of an aiming device which transmits light to the indicia and a parameter comprises characteristics of the aiming device.

7. A data reader in accordance with claim 1, wherein the processor compares run time parameter data of the image scan engine with the stored parameters.

8. A data reader in accordance with claim 1, wherein the processor is programmed to update the data utilizing a remote updating system.

9. A method of operating a data reader comprising:

reading symbol indicia with an optical reader and producing a symbol signal representative of the symbol indicia;

controlling the optical reader with a processor having memory; and

storing parameter data specific to the optical reader in the processor memory, the parameter data for use in operating or servicing the optical reader.

10. The method of claim 9, wherein the parameter data comprises at least one of the following:

aiming pattern offset;

serial number;

image pixel array size;

image orientation;

field illumination flatness;

lens distortion;

pixel defect identification;

light path anomalies;

image sensor anomalies;

noise characterization of the image sensor;

max LED current;

optical reader orientation;

optical reader configuration;

aimer configuration;

lens prescription;

field geometric distortion; and

pin cushioning correction.

11. A method in accordance with claim 9, wherein the processor and memory are provided on the same integrated circuit package.

12. A method in accordance with claim 9, wherein the optical reader is comprised of an aiming device which transmits light to the indicia and a parameter comprises characteristics of the aiming device.

13. A method in accordance with claim 9, further comprising the step of comparing run time parameter data of the image scan engine with the stored parameters.

14. A method in accordance with claim 9, further comprising the step of updating the data utilizing a remote updating system.

15. An optical reading system comprising:

an optical reader;

a processor for controlling the optical reader, the processor having memory for storing parameter data specific to the optical reader;

a host computer remote from the optical reader having the capability of reading the parameter specific data and editing the parameter data.

16. An optical reading system in accordance with claim 15, wherein the parameter data comprises at least one of the following:

aiming pattern offset;

serial number;

image pixel array size;

image orientation;

field illumination flatness;

lens distortion;

pixel defect identification;

light path anomalies;

image sensor anomalies;

noise characterization of the image sensor;

max LED current;

optical reader orientation;

optical reader configuration;

aimer configuration;

lens prescription;

field geometric distortion; and

pin cushioning correction.

17. An optical reading system in accordance with claim 15, wherein the processor and memory are provided on the same integrated circuit package.

18. An optical reading system in accordance with claim 15, wherein the optical reader is comprised of an aiming device which transmits light to the indicia and a parameter comprises characteristics of the aiming device.

19. An optical reading system in accordance with claim 15, wherein the processor compares run time parameter data of the image scan engine with the stored parameters.

20. An optical reading system in accordance with claim 15, wherein the processor is programmed to update the data utilizing a remote updating system.

21. A data reader system comprising:

an optical reader for reading symbol indicia and producing a symbol signal representative of the symbol indicia;

a memory device for storing parameter data specific to the optical reader; and

,

a processor for controlling the optical reader, wherein the processor is located remotely from the optical reader and memory device.

22. The data reader of claim 21, wherein the parameter data comprises at least one of the following:

aiming pattern offset;

serial number;

image pixel array size;

image orientation;

field illumination flatness;

lens distortion;

pixel defect identification;

light path anomalies;

image sensor anomalies;

noise characterization of the image sensor;

max LED current;

optical reader orientation;

optical reader configuration;

aimer configuration;

lens prescription;

field geometric distortion; and

pin cushioning correction.

23. A data reader in accordance with claim 22, wherein the optical reader is comprised of an aiming device which transmits light to the indicia and a parameter comprises characteristics of the aiming device.

24. A data reader in accordance with claim 22, wherein the processor compares run time parameter data of the image scan engine with the stored parameters.

25. A data reader in accordance with claim 22, wherein the processor is programmed to update the data utilizing a remote updating system.

26. A data reader system comprising:

a housing containing an optical reader for reading symbol indicia and producing a symbol signal representative of the symbol indicia and a memory device for storing parameter data specific to the optical reader; and

a processor for controlling;

the optical reader;

receiving the symbol signal and interpreting the symbol signal;

the processor having memory for storing parameter data specific to the optical reader, wherein the processor is located remotely from the housing.

27. The data reader of claim 26, wherein the parameter data comprises at least one of the following:

aiming pattern offset;

serial number;

image pixel array size;

image orientation;

field illumination flatness;

lens distortion;

pixel defect identification;

light path anomalies;

image sensor anomalies;

noise characterization of the image sensor;

max LED current;

optical reader orientation;

optical reader configuration;

aimer configuration;

lens prescription;

field geometric distortion; and

pin cushioning correction.

28. A data reader in accordance with claim 26, wherein the processor and memory are provided on the same integrated circuit package.

29. A data reader in accordance with claim 26, wherein the optical reader is comprised of an aiming device which transmits light to the indicia and a parameter comprises characteristics of the aiming device.

30. A data reader in accordance with claim 26, wherein the processor compares run time parameter data of the image scan engine with the stored parameters.

31. A data reader in accordance with claim 26, wherein the processor is programmed to update the data utilizing a remote updating system.

32. A data reader in accordance with claim 26, wherein the optical reader and memory device are interconnected using a two-wire serial bus.

33. A data reader in accordance with claim 26, wherein the optical reader and memory device are interconnected using a two-wire serial bus.

34. A data reader system comprising:

an optical reader for reading symbol indicia and producing a symbol signal representative of the symbol indicia, the optical reader having an image sensor and memory device;

a processor for controlling the optical reader, wherein the processor is located remote from the optical reader.

35. The data reader of claim 34, wherein the parameter data comprises at least one of the following:

aiming pattern offset;

serial number;

image pixel array size;

image orientation;

field illumination flatness;

lens distortion;

pixel defect identification;

light path anomalies;

image sensor anomalies;

noise characterization of the image sensor;

max LED current;

optical reader orientation;

optical reader configuration;

aimer configuration;

lens prescription;

field geometric distortion; and

pin cushioning correction.

36. A data reader in accordance with claim 34, wherein the optical reader is comprised of an aiming device which transmits light to the indicia and a parameter comprises characteristics of the aiming device.

37. A data reader in accordance with claim 34, wherein the processor compares run time parameter data of the image scan engine with the stored parameters.

38. A data reader in accordance with claim 34, wherein the processor is programmed to update the data utilizing a remote updating system.
