First Claim
1. A handheld portable audio device for reproducing MPEG encoded audio data, the handheld portable audio device comprising:
- a plurality of inputs, including a forward input, a reverse input, and a play control input;
one or more memory chips to store multiple selections of compressed digitized audio data;
a display;
one or more processors to reproduce the multiple selections of compressed digitized audio data in an audible format and to provide information to the display;
a re-chargeable battery;
an output receptive to headphones;
wherein the multiple selections of compressed digitized audio data are compressed according to a Moving Pictures Expert Group (MPEG) compression standard;
wherein, when a selection of compressed digitized audio data is being reproduced, the display provides the selection'"'"'s title;
wherein, when the selection of compressed digitized audio data is being reproduced, selection of the forward input for a first amount of time will cause the one or more processors to reproduce another selection of compressed digitized audio data;
wherein, when the selection of compressed digitized audio data is being reproduced, selection of the reverse input for a second amount of time will cause the one or more processors to begin reproducing the selection of compressed digitized audio data from its beginning;
wherein, when the selection of compressed digitized audio data is being reproduced, selection of the play control input will cause the one or more processors to stop reproducing the selection of compressed digitized audio data;
wherein, when no selection of compressed digitized audio data is being reproduced, selection of the play control input will cause the one or more processors to begin playing the selection of compressed digitized audio data; and
wherein, when the power level of the re-chargeable battery falls below a selected level, the display provides an indication relating to the power level.

Abstract
A portable audio device suitable for reproducing MPEG encoded data includes a plurality of inputs, one or more memory chips, a display, an audio output, one or more processors, and a battery. The plurality of inputs includes a forward input, a reverse input, and a play control input. The one or more memory chips store compressed digitized audio data. The one or more processors are responsive to selection of at least one of the plurality of inputs to reproduce select rows of compressed digitized audio data stored in the data in an audio format and to provide information to the display.
