Abstract

A community that is accessed via a portal can be provided for maintaining user membership in a collaborative computing environment. Groupnote resources can maintain information posted by the community members. Data for the groupnote resource can be stored in a repository in the form of nodes which are wrapped by content objects that specify the type of resource that the node contains data for. A groupnotes portlet can also be provided in order to allow the community members to display the posted information. The groupnotes portlet can have a floating element display mode and an edit mode. In one embodiment, only the body of the groupnote is shown when in display mode. Membership and functional capabilities as well as entitlements can control member access to the groupnotes portlet. Thus, members who do not fit into certain membership capabilities can be precluded from editing various groupnotes.

Claims

1. A system for displaying content from a portlet as a page element, comprising:

a computer having a user interface with a portal rendered thereon;

a community accessed via the portal, the community including one or more members;

a repository containing a groupnote resource that stores information posted by the one or more members; and

a groupnotes portlet for allowing the one or more members to edit and display the groupnote contents.

2. The system of claim 1 further comprising:

an editor portlet implemented by the groupnotes portlet for editing a groupnote.

3. The system of claim 1 wherein two or more groupnotes are interrelated such that a member is capable of navigating between the two or more groupnotes.

4. The system of claim 1 wherein the groupnotes portlet has a floating element display mode and an edit mode.

5. The system of claim 4 wherein only the body of the groupnote is displayed within a page on a user'"'"'s interface when in floating element display mode.

6. The system of claim 1 wherein the groupnote resource data is stored in a node within the repository and wherein the node is wrapped by a content object that specifies the type of resource for which the node contains data.

7. The system of claim 1 further comprising:

a membership capability for controlling community member access to the groupnote wherein the community member is associated with the membership capability.

8. The system of claim 7 further comprising:

a functional capability mapped to the membership capability for determining whether members in the membership capability are allowed to perform an action.

9. The system of claim 8 further comprising:

an entitlement associated with the groupnote for controlling create, read, update and delete operations.

10. The system of claim 1 wherein two or more groupnotes are displayed together by the groupnotes portlet.

11. A method for displaying content from a portlet as a page element, comprising:

providing a computer having a user interface with a portal rendered thereon;

maintaining user membership in a community accessed via the portal, the community including one or more members;

providing a repository containing a groupnote resource that stores information posted by the one or more members; and

providing a groupnotes portlet for allowing the one or more members to edit and display the groupnote contents.

12. The method of claim 11 further comprising:

providing an editor portlet implemented by the groupnotes portlet for editing a groupnote.

13. The method of claim 11 wherein two or more groupnotes are interrelated such that a member is capable of navigating between the two or more groupnotes.

14. The method of claim 11 wherein the groupnotes portlet has a floating element display mode and an edit mode.

15. The method of claim 14 wherein only the body of the groupnote is displayed within a page on a user'"'"'s interface when in floating element display mode.

16. The method of claim 11 wherein the groupnote resource data is stored in a node within the repository and wherein the node is wrapped by a content object that specifies the type of resource for which the node contains data.

17. The method of claim 11 further comprising:

providing a membership capability for controlling community member access to the groupnote wherein the community member is associated with the membership capability.

18. The method of claim 17 further comprising:

mapping a functional capability to the membership capability for determining whether members in the membership capability are allowed to perform an action.

19. The method of claim 18 further comprising:

associating an entitlement with the groupnote for controlling create, read, update and delete operations.

20. A computer-readable medium having instructions stored thereon that when executed by one or more processors cause the system to:

provide a computer having a user interface with a portal rendered thereon;

maintain user membership in a community accessed via the portal, the community including one or more members;

provide a repository containing a groupnote resource that stores information posted by the one or more members; and

provide a groupnotes portlet for allowing the one or more members to edit and display the groupnote contents.
