Abstract

A client and server computers can be provided in the context of a community framework. Portions of the client'"'"'s user interface can be updated dynamically and granularly via communicating with the server and without reposting the entire page upon each communication. A dynamic content tag library can be provided to add dynamic update functionality to the client'"'"'s user interface. The developer can use tags contained in the tag library when customizing the user interface for various community members. For example, a dynamic container tag can specify a target area on the client'"'"'s user interface to be updated dynamically. This target area can be a portlet, portion or a portlet, value or some granular piece of data on the user interface. An action script tag can specify a particular update request to be executed by the server, the results of which replace the old contents of the dynamic container.

Claims

1. A system for dynamic content in a communities framework, comprising:

a client computer having a user interface and a portal page displayed thereon;

a dynamic container tag for specifying a dynamic container portion of the portal page to be updated wherein contents of the dynamic container are replaced with new contents;

an action script tag for specifying an update request to be executed such that results of the update request replace the contents of the dynamic container; and

a server computer that carries out the execution of the update request and returns the results to the client computer.

2. The system of claim 1 wherein a developer can use the dynamic container tag and the action script tag to enable dynamic updates of the client user interface.

3. The system of claim 1 wherein the update request is a granular communication between the client computer and a server the result of which returns a fragment of Hyper Text Markup Language (HTML) for updating the dynamic container portion of the portal page.

4. The system of claim 1 further comprising:

a community accessed via the portal for maintaining user membership, the community including one or more members.

5. The system of claim 1 further comprising:

a portlet contained in the portal page wherein the dynamic container tag specifies a portion of the portlet to by updated dynamically.

6. The system of claim 1 further comprising:

a parameter tag for specifying parameters to populate the update request.

7. The system of claim 1 wherein the dynamic container is at least one of a page fragment, a portlet, a portlet fragment, a table, and a table fragment.

8. The system of claim 1 wherein the dynamic container is updated without re-posting the portal page.

9. The system of claim 1 wherein access to page flow state is maintained throughout execution of the update request.

10. The system of claim 1 wherein old contents of the dynamic container area are deleted and replaced with results of the update request.

11. A method for providing dynamic content in a communities framework, comprising:

providing a client computer having a user interface thereon and a page displayed on the user interface;

specifying a dynamic container area to be updated with a dynamic container tag, the dynamic container area located on the page;

specifying an action to be executed with an action script tag;

executing the action by a server computer and returning results of the action to the client computer; and

replacing contents of the dynamic container area with the results of the action.

12. The method of claim 11 wherein the dynamic container tag specifies a portion of a portlet on the page, the portion to be updated dynamically without updating the entire page.

13. The method of claim 11 further comprising:

providing a server computer for executing the action and returning the results to the client wherein the action is a request for data to be updated on the dynamic container area.

14. The method of claim 11 further comprising:

populating the request with parameters specified by a parameter tag.

15. The method of claim 11 wherein the action is a granular communication between the client computer and a server the result of which returns a fragment of HyperText Markup Language (HTML) for updating the dynamic container area.

16. The method of claim 11 wherein the dynamic container is at least one of a page fragment, a portlet, a portlet fragment, a table and a table fragment.

17. The method of claim 11 wherein the dynamic container is updated without re-posting the page.

18. The method of claim 11 further comprising:

maintaining access to page flow state throughout execution of the action.

19. The method of claim 11 further comprising:

deleting old contents of the dynamic container area and replacing them with results of the action.

20. A computer-readable medium having instructions stored thereon that when executed by one or more processors cause the system to:

provide a client computer having a user interface thereon and a page displayed on the user interface;

specify a dynamic container area to be updated with a dynamic container tag, the dynamic container area located on the page;

specify an action to be executed with an action script tag;

execute the action by a server computer and returning results of the action to the client computer; and

replace contents of the dynamic container area with the results of the action.
