Abstract

An electrophoretic display device is described. The device includes a substrate, first electrodes, an electrophoretic film having electrophoretic particles, and second electrodes. The substrate is has a plurality of pixel regions. First electrodes are disposed respectively on each pixel region, and include first patterns separated from one another and second patterns connected to the first patterns. The second electrode is disposed on the electrophoretic film. The area of one of the electrodes, opposing the other of the electrodes has apertures formed therein, reducing the contact area between the electrode and the electrophoretic film.

Claims

1. An electrophoretic display device comprising:

a substrate;

a first electrode disposed on the substrate, including;

a plurality of first patterns separated from each other; and

a second pattern electrically connected two or more of the plurality of first patterns;

an electrophoretic film disposed on the first electrode; and

a second electrode disposed on the electrophoretic film.

2. The electrophoretic display device according to claim 1, wherein a distance between adjacent ones of the plurality of first patterns is between about 3 μ

m and about 10 μ

m.

3. The electrophoretic display device according to claim 1, wherein the first patterns have a stripe configuration.

4. The electrophoretic display device according to claim 1, wherein the plurality of first patterns intersect with a plurality of second patterns to form a lattice.

5. The electrophoretic display device according to claim 1, further comprising a thin film transistor disposed on the substrate and electrically connected to the first electrode.

6. The electrophoretic display device according to claim 5, further comprising a protective layer formed on the thin film transistor and forming a contact hole for exposing a drain electrode of the thin film transistor.

7. The electrophoretic display device according to claim 5, wherein a drain electrode of the thin film transistor is electrically connected to the first electrode.

8. The electrophoretic display device according to claim 1, wherein each of the plurality of first patterns has a dimension in a direction towards an adjacent first pattern that is greater or equal to a distance between adjacent first patterns.

9. The electrophoretic display device according to claim 1, wherein the substrate includes a flexible substrate.

10. The electrophoretic display device according to claim 1, wherein the first electrode is formed of indium tin oxide (ITO) or indium zinc oxide(IZO).

11. The electrophoretic display device according to claim 1, wherein the first electrode is formed of at least one material selected from the group consisting of Pt (platinum), Au (gold), Ir (iridium), Cr (chromium), Mg (magnesium), Ag (silver), Ni (nickel), Al (aluminum) and an alloy.

12. The electrophoretic display device according to claim 1, wherein the second electrode includes indium tin oxide (ITO) or indium zinc oxide (IZO).

13. An electrophoretic display device comprising:

a substrate;

a first electrode disposed on the substrate and including at least one aperture that exposes the substrate;

an electrophoretic film disposed on the first electrode; and

a second electrode disposed on the electrophoretic film.

14. The electrophoretic display device according to claim 13, wherein the aperture has a striped pattern configuration.

15. The electrophoretic display device according to claim 13, wherein the aperture is dot-shaped.

16. The electrophoretic display device according to claim 13, wherein the aperture has a width of about 3 μ

m to about 10 μ

m.

17. The electrophoretic display device according to claim 13, wherein the aperture has a length of about 3 μ

m to about 10 μ

m.

18. The electrophoretic display device according to claim 13, further comprising a thin film transistor disposed on the substrate and electrically connected to the first electrode.

19. A display device, comprising:

a substrate having a pixel region;

a first and a second electrode; and

an electrophoretic film disposed between the first and the second electrode;

wherein an area of at least one of the first electrode or the second electrode is less than an area of the pixel region.

20. The display device of claim 19, wherein the area of at least one of the first electrode or the second electrode is approximately equal to half of the area of the pixel region.

21. The display device of claim 19, wherein at least one of the first electrode or the second electrode is patterned with apertures.
