Abstract
The present invention relates generally to functional sweetener compositions comprising non-caloric or low-caloric natural and/or synthetic high-potency sweeteners and methods for making and using them. In particular, the present invention relates to different functional sweetener compositions comprising at least one non-caloric or low-caloric natural and/or synthetic high potency sweetener, at least one sweet taste improving composition, and at least one functional ingredient, such as a weight management agent. The present invention also relates to functional sweetener compositions and methods that can improve the tastes of non-caloric or low-caloric high-potency sweeteners by imparting a more sugar-like taste or characteristic. In particular, the functional sweetener compositions and methods provide a more sugar-like temporal profile, including sweetness onset and sweetness linger, and/or a more sugar-like flavor profile.

1. A functional sweetener composition comprising:

The functional sweetener composition of claim 1, wherein the at least one weight management agent comprises at least one appetite suppressant and/or thermogenesis agent selected from the group consisting of least one macronutrient, at least one herbal extract, at least one exogenous hormone having appetite suppressant effects and/or thermogenesis activating effects, and combinations thereof.

3. The functional sweetener composition of claim 1, wherein the at least weight management agent comprises at least one macronutrient comprising at least one protein, at least one carbohydrate, at least one dietary fat, or combinations thereof.

The functional sweetener composition of claim 1, wherein the at least one weight management agent comprises at least one protein selected from the group consisting of soy and soy isolates, whey and whey isolates, micro cross filtered whey isolates, casein and casein isolates, wheat proteins, glutenir, gliadin, gluten, isolated grain and vegetable proteins, egg white protein, protein isolates, albumen isolates, and combinations thereof.

5. The functional sweetener composition of claim 1, wherein the at least one weight management agent comprises at least one carbohydrate selected from the group consisting of polydextrose;
- inulin;
monosaccharide-derived polyols such as erythritol, mannitol, xylitol, and sorbitol;
disaccharide-derived alcohols such as isomalt, lactitol, and maltitol;
hydrogenated starch hydrolysates; and
combinations thereof.

The functional sweetener composition of claim 1, wherein the at least one weight management agent comprises at least one exogenous hormone having appetite suppressant effects and/or thermogenesis activating effects selected from the group consisting of CCK, peptide YY, ghrelin, bombesin and gastrin-releasing peptide (GRP), enterostatin, apolipoprotein A-IV, GLP-1, amylin, somastatin, leptin, and combinations thereof.

12. The functional sweetener composition of claim 1, wherein the at least one sweet taste improving composition imparts a more sugar-like temporal profile to the sweetener composition than the at least one high-potency sweetener would have without the at least one sweet taste improving composition.
