Abstract

A messaging system for selectively performing an action on information, for remote retrieval of messages, for performing action on information at different times, for selective paging, for providing a user interface for message access and having integrated audio visual messaging.

Claims

1. A method for providing automatic notification of and direct access to remotely stored content intended for a user having a wireless transceiver configured to receive messages and retrieve remotely stored content, comprising the steps of:

receiving a first message containing content intended for the wireless transceiver;

storing the first message;

automatically determining the status of the wireless transceiver;

responsive to the status of the wireless transceiver, automatically initiating transmission of a second message, the second message including a message identifier corresponding to the stored first message, wherein the message identifier enables the user to directly access the content of the first message; and

responsive to a transmission initiated by the wireless transceiver, establishing a two-way communication session with, and downloading to, the wireless transceiver the content of the first message corresponding to the message identifier.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the step of automatically determining the status of the wireless transceiver comprises retrieving information from a home location register (HLR) that stores information pertaining to the wireless transceiver.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the second message further comprises at least a portion of the first message.

4. The method of claim 3, wherein the first message comprises a body and a header and the portion of the first message comprises at least a portion of the header.

6. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

receiving at a system associated with a direct access telephone number included in the second message a telephone call placed from the wireless transceiver by a user of the wireless transceiver; and

after receiving the telephone call, receiving from the wireless transceiver a voice message dictated by the user.

7. The method of claim 6, further comprising:

transmitting the voice message to a sender of the first message.

8. The method of claim 7, wherein the step of transmitting the voice message to the sender of the first message comprises transmitting an electronic mail message having a file attached thereto, wherein the file includes the voice message.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein the message identifier is a direct access telephone number.

10. The method of claim 1, wherein the message identifier is a file locator.

13. The method of claim 1, wherein the step of automatically determining the status of the wireless transceiver comprises determining a presence of the wireless transceiver and wherein the step of automatically initiating transmission comprises transmitting the second message responsive to the presence of the wireless transceiver.

14. The method of claim 1, wherein the step of automatically determining the status of the wireless transceiver comprises retrieving the status from a home location register (HLR) and wherein the step of automatically initiating transmission comprises transmitting the second message responsive to the contents of the HLR.

15. The method of claim 1, wherein the step of automatically determining the status of the wireless transceiver comprises determining preset conditions set by the user of the wireless transceiver and wherein the step of automatically initiating transmission comprises transmitting the second message responsive to the preset conditions.

18. The method of claim 1, wherein the step of automatically determining the status of the wireless transceiver comprises determining if the user is logged in, and wherein the step of automatically initiating transmission comprises transmitting the second message responsive to the user log-in status.

19. The method of claim 1, wherein the step of automatically determining the status of the wireless transceiver comprises determining if the wireless transceiver is on line and wherein the step of automatically initiating transmission comprises transmitting the second message responsive to the wireless transceiver'"'"'s on line status.

20. The method of claim 1, wherein the step of automatically determining the status of the wireless transceiver comprises determining an activity of the user at the wireless transceiver and wherein the step of automatically initiating transmission comprises transmitting the second message responsive to the activity of the user at the wireless transceiver.

24. The method of claim 1, wherein the step of automatically determining the status of the wireless transceiver comprises determining sensory input at the wireless transceiver and wherein the step of automatically initiating transmission comprises transmitting the second message responsive to the sensory input at the wireless transceiver.

27. The method of claim 1, wherein the step of automatically determining the status of the wireless transceiver comprises determining an importance of a message and wherein the step of automatically initiating transmission comprises transmitting the second message responsive to the importance of a message.

28. The method of claim 1, wherein the first message is an email message and the second message is an email message.

33. The method of claim 1, wherein the step of transmitting the second message comprises the step of transmitting the second message to the wireless transceiver.

34. The method of claim 1, wherein the step of transmitting the second message comprises the step of transmitting the second message to a desktop computer.

71. A system for providing automatic notification of and direct access to remotely stored content intended for a user having a wireless transceiver configured to receive messages and retrieve remotely stored content, comprising:

a communication system; and

a message processor, wherein the message processor is configured to;

receive a first message containing content intended for the wireless transceiver;

store the first message;

automatically determine the status of the wireless transceiver;

responsive to the status of the wireless transceiver, automatically initiate transmission of a second message, the second message including a message identifier corresponding to the stored first message, wherein the message identifier enables the user to directly access the content of the first message; and

download to the wireless transceiver the content of the first message corresponding to the message identifier.

72. The system of claim 71, wherein the second message further comprises at least a portion of the first message.

75. The system of claim 71, wherein the message processor is further configured to receive a telephone call, the telephone call being placed from the wireless transceiver by a user of the wireless transceiver and receive from the wireless transceiver a voice message dictated by the user.

76. The system of claim 75, wherein the message processor is further configured to transmit the voice message to a sender of the first message.

77. The system of claim 76, wherein the message processor is configured to transmit the voice message to a sender of the first message by transmitting an electronic mail message having a file attached thereto, wherein the file includes the voice message.

78. The system of claim 71, wherein the message identifier is a direct access telephone number.

79. The system of claim 71, wherein the message identifier is a file locator.

80. The system of claim 71, wherein the message processor automatically determines the status of the wireless transceiver by determining the location of the wireless transceiver.

82. The system of claim 71, wherein the message processor automatically determines the status of the wireless transceiver by detecting a presence of the wireless transceiver.

83. The system of claim 71, wherein the message processor automatically determines the status of the wireless transceiver by retrieving the status from a home location register (HLR).

84. The system of claim 71, wherein the message processor automatically determines the status of the wireless transceiver by determining preset conditions set by the user of the wireless transceiver.

87. The system of claim 71, wherein the message processor automatically determines the status of the wireless transceiver by determining if the user is logged in.

88. The system of claim 71, wherein the message processor automatically determines the status of the wireless transceiver by determining if the wireless transceiver is on line.

93. The system of claim 71, wherein the message processor automatically determines the status of the wireless transceiver by determining sensory input at the wireless transceiver.
