Abstract

A method and system provides narrowband communications across a communications link through the processing of a superframe of data into packets or through the processing of packets into a superframe of data. In an embodiment, a first node repackages a superframe of data containing multiple subframes of data in known positions within the superframe into multiple packets. A sequence indicator is inserted into a payload area of the multiple packets, the sequence indicator corresponding to a subframe in the given communications packet and its position within the superframe. The packets are transmitted across a connection to a second node. At the second node, sequence indicators in the payload portion of each of the packets are inspected. The multiple subframes of data are extracted along with corresponding command and control information. Using the sequence indicators, frames of data are formed from the multiple subframes of data.

Claims

1. A method of communicating across a communications link, comprising:

repackaging a superframe of data containing multiple subframes of data in known positions within the superframe into multiple communications packets; and

inserting a sequence indicator into a payload area of the multiple communications packets, the sequence indicator in a given communications packet corresponding to a subframe in the given communications packet and its position within the superframe.

2. A method of claim 1 further comprising repackaging multiple subframes into the given communications packet and inserting at least one sequence indicator representative of the multiple subframes within the superframe.

3. A method of claim 1 further comprising transmitting the communications packets from a first node to a second node across a communications link.

4. A method of claim 3 wherein transmitting the communications packets occurs in a sequence corresponding to the sequence indicators.

5. A method of claim 3 wherein the transmitting occurs every 500 μ

secs.

6. A method of claim 1 further comprising outputting the multiple communications packets on multiple communications paths, wherein the sequence indicators further represent a position of the corresponding communications packet of the multiple packets on its communications path.

7. A method of claim 1 wherein the payload area includes narrowband data.

8. A method of claim 1 wherein the superframe of data is carried via a time division multiplexing (TDM) protocol prior to repackaging into multiple packets.

9. A node in a network comprising:

a repackaging unit configured to repackage a superframe of data containing multiple subframes of data in known positions within the superframe into multiple communications packets; and

an insertion unit configured to insert a sequence indicator into a payload area of the multiple communications packets, the sequence indicator in a given packet corresponding to a subframe in the given communications packet and its position within the superframe.

10. A node of claim 9 wherein the repackaging unit is further configured to repackage multiple subframes into the given packet and wherein the insertion unit is further configured to insert at least one sequence indicator representative of the multiple subframes within the superframe.

11. A node of claim 9 wherein the repackaging unit and the insertion unit are processor instructions readable and executable by a processor in the node.

12. A node of claim 9 further comprising a transmission unit configured to transmit the communication packets to a second node after insertion of a sequence indicator into the payload area of a given communication packet.

13. A node of claim 12 wherein the transmission unit is further configured to transmit the communication packets in the order corresponding to the sequence indicators.

14. A node of claim 12 wherein the transmission unit is further configured to transmit the packets every 500 μ

secs.

15. A node of claim 9 wherein the transmission unit is further configured to output the multiple packets on multiple communications paths, wherein the sequence indicators represent a position of the corresponding packet of the multiple packets on its communication path.

16. A node of claim 9 wherein the payload area includes narrowband data.

17. A node of claim 9 wherein the superframe of data is time division multiplexing (TDM) data.

18. A method of communicating across a communications link, comprising:

inspecting respective sequence indicators in a payload portion of packets in a sequence of packets;

extracting multiple subframes of data from the packets; and

forming a frame of data with the multiple subframes of data based on the respective sequence indicators.

19. A method of claim 18 further comprising forming multiple frames of data from the multiple subframes of data.

20. A method of claim 19 wherein each of the multiple frames contains a unique destination address which identifies the destination node of each of the frames of data.

21. A method of claim 18 further comprising queuing multiple frames in a buffer based on the sequence indicators.

22. A method of claim 18 wherein the multiple subframes of data include narrowband data.

23. A method of claim 18 further comprising:

extracting command and control bits corresponding to the multiple subframes of data;

directing the subframes of data to a first processing unit; and

directing the command and control bits to a second processing unit.

24. A method of claim 18 wherein inspecting the sequence indicators includes determining whether a loss of synchronization occurs with more packets in the sequence of packets expected;

and wherein forming the frame of data includes using signaling bytes of other packets in the sequence of packets and (i) reusing previous subframes of data or (ii) using a silence code in place of missing subframes of data.

25. A method of claim 18 wherein inspecting the sequence indicators includes:

determining whether a loss of synchronization occurs with no more packets in the sequence of packets expected;

maintaining a call associated with the sequence of packets; and

dropping the call in an event a next sequence of packets associated with the call dropping is received in a given length of time.

26. A node in a network comprising:

an inspection unit configured to inspect a sequence indicator in a payload portion of a packet;

an extraction unit configured to extract multiple subframes of data from multiple packets; and

a formation unit configured to form a frame of data based on the sequence indicator and the multiple subframes of data.

27. A node of claim 26 wherein the formation unit is further configured to form multiple frames of data.

28. A node of claim 27 wherein each of the multiple frames contain a unique destination address that identifies the destination node of each of the frames of data.

29. A node of claim 27 further comprising a buffer configured to queue multiple frames.

30. A node of claim 26 wherein the multiple subframes of data portion includes narrowband data.

31. A node of claim 26 wherein the inspection unit, the extraction unit, and the formation unit are processor instructions readable and executable by a processor in the node.

32. A node of claim 26 wherein the extraction unit is further configured to direct narrowband data to a first processing unit and direct command and control bits to a second processing unit.

33. A node of claim 26 wherein the inspection unit is further configured to determine whether a loss of synchronization occurs with more packets in the sequence of packets expected;

and wherein the formation unit is further configured to use signaling bytes of other packets in the sequence of packets and (i) reuse previous subframes of data or (ii) use a silence code in place of missing subframes of data.

34. A node of claim 26 wherein the inspection unit is further configured to:

(i) determine whether a loss of synchronization occurs with no more packets in the sequence of packets expected;

(ii) maintain a call associated with the sequence of packets; and

(iii) drop the call in an event a next sequence of packets associated with the call dropping is received in a given length of time.

35. A method of communicating across a communications link, comprising:

inspecting respective sequence indicators in a payload portion of packets in a sequence of packets;

extracting multiple subframes of data from the packets; and

forming a superframe of data with the multiple subframes of data based on the sequence indicators.

36. A method of claim 35 wherein inspecting respective sequence indicators includes inspecting respective sequence indicators in the payload portion of packets in multiple sequences of packets.

37. A method of claim 36 wherein each of the multiple sequences of packets contains a unique source address that identifies a unique communication path of each sequence of packets.

38. A method of claim 37 wherein forming a superframe of data includes forming a superframe of data with corresponding subframes of data from different multiple sequences of packets.

39. A method of claim 35 wherein the multiple subframes of data include narrowband data.

40. A method of claim 35 wherein inspecting the sequence indicators includes determining whether a loss of synchronization occurs with more packets in the sequence of packets expected;

and wherein forming a superframe of data includes using signaling bytes of other packets in the multiple packets and (i) reusing previous subframes of data or (ii) using a silence code in place of missing subframes of data.

41. A method of claim 35 wherein inspecting the sequence indicators includes:

determining whether a loss of synchronization occurs with no more packets in the sequence of packets expected;

maintaining a call associated with the sequence of packets; and

dropping the call in an event a next sequence of packets associated with the call dropping is received in a given length of time.

42. A method of claim 36 further comprising transmitting the superframe of data via a time division multiplexing (TDM) protocol.

43. A node in a network comprising:

an inspection unit configured to inspect a sequence indicator in a payload portion of a packet;

an extraction unit configured to extract multiple subframes of data from multiple packets; and

a formation unit configured to form a superframe of data based on the sequence indicator and the multiple subframes of data.

44. A node of claim 43 wherein the inspection unit is further configured to inspect sequence indicators in the payload portion of packets in multiple sequences of packets.

45. A node of claim 44 wherein each of the multiple sequences of packets contains a unique source address that identifies a unique communication path of each sequence of packets.

46. A node of claim 45 wherein the formation unit is further configured to form a superframe of data with corresponding subframes of data from different multiple sequences of packets.

47. A node of claim 43 wherein the multiple subframes of data include narrowband data.

48. A node of claim 43 wherein the inspection unit, the extraction unit, and the formation unit are processor instructions readable and executable by a processor in the node.

49. A node of claim 43 wherein the inspection unit is further configured to determine whether a loss of synchronization occurs with more packets in the sequence of packets expected;

and wherein the formation unit is further configured to use signaling bytes of other packets in the multiple packets and (i) reuse previous subframes of data or (ii) use a silence code in place of missing subframes of data.

50. A node of claim 43 wherein inspecting the sequence indicators includes:

determining whether a loss of synchronization occurs with no more packets in the sequence of packets expected;

maintaining a call associated with the sequence of packets; and

dropping the call in an event a next sequence of packets associated with the call dropping is received in a given length of time.

51. A node of claim 43 wherein the superframe of data is time division multiplexing (TDM) data.

52. A method of communicating across a communications link, comprising:

forming a sequence of packets containing subframes of data; and

inserting a sequence indicator in a payload portion of the packets used to position the respective subframes within a superframe formed at a node receiving the sequence of packets.

53. A method of claim 52 wherein the sequence of packets contains a unique source address that identifies a unique communications path of the sequence of packets.

54. A method of claim 52 further comprising transmitting the communications packets from a first node to a second node across a communications link.

55. A method of claim 54 wherein transmitting the communications packets occurs in a sequence corresponding to the sequence indicators.

56. A method of claim 54 wherein the transmitting occurs every 500 μ

secs.

57. A method of claim 52 wherein the payload area includes narrowband data.

58. A method of claim 52 wherein the superframe of data is carried via a time division multiplexing (TDM) protocol prior to repackaging into multiple packets.

59. A node in a network comprising:

a formation unit configured to form multiple packets of data containing multiple subframes of data; and

an insertion unit configured to insert a sequence indicator in a payload portion of the packets used to position the respective subframes within a superframe formed at a node receiving the sequence of packets.

60. A node of claim 59 wherein the sequence of packets contains a unique source address that identifies a unique communication path of the sequence of packets.

61. A node of claim 59 wherein the formation unit and the insertion unit are processor instructions readable and executable by a processor in the node.

62. A node of claim 59 further comprising transmitting the communications packets from a first node to a second node across a communications link.

63. A node of claim 62 wherein transmitting the communications packets occurs in a sequence corresponding to the sequence indicators.

64. A node of claim 62 wherein the transmitting occurs every 500 μ

secs.

65. A node of claim 59 wherein the payload area includes narrowband data.

66. A node of claim 59 wherein the superframe of data is carried via a time division multiplexing (TDM) protocol prior to repackaging into multiple packets.
