Abstract

Methods of using electrodes to obtain physiological location motion data are provides. Embodiments of the methods include producing an electrode from a broadcasting electrode that is proximal to the physiological location of interest and detecting a change in an induced electric potential at a receiving electrode to obtain the motion data of interest. Also provided are systems and components thereof, e.g., programming, for practicing methods according to embodiments of the invention.

Claims

1. A method for obtaining motion data for a physiological location of a body, said method comprising:

producing an electric field from a broadcasting electrode positioned at said physiological location; and

detecting a change in an induced electric potential on a receiving electrode to obtain motion data for said physiological location.

2. The method according to claim 1, wherein said physiological location is an internal physiological location of said body.

3. The method according to claim 1, wherein said internal physiological location is a cardiac location and said motion data is cardiac motion data.

4. The method according to claim 1, wherein said electric field is an alternating current electric field.

5. The method according to claim 1, wherein said receiving electrode is positioned at an external body location.

6. The method according to claim 1, wherein said receiving electrode is positioned at an internal body location.

7. The method according to claim 6, wherein said broadcasting electrode and receiving electrode are present on satellite electrode structures present on a vascular lead.

8. The method according to claim 7, wherein each of said satellite electrode structures includes a control chip.

9. The method according to claim 8, wherein said satellite electrode structures are segmented electrode satellite electrode structures.

10. The method according to claim 9, wherein said electric field is produced from electrodes on two adjacent satellites on said lead.

11. The method according to claim 9, wherein said electric field is produced from electrodes on the same satellite on said lead.

12. The method according to claim 11, wherein said satellite is a quadrant electrode and said electrodes are opposing electrodes of said quadrant electrode.

13. The method according to claim 9, wherein said lead is a multiplex lead.

14. The method according to claim 13, wherein said multiplex lead includes a two-wire bus and said satellites are electrically coupled to said two-wire bus.

15. The method according to claim 14, wherein said method further comprises selecting one of said satellites as a broadcasting satellite and another of said satellites as a receiving satellite.

16. The method according to claim 15, wherein said selecting comprises choosing which electrodes on said broadcasting satellite are to be operative and which electrodes on said receiving satellite to measure changes of induced electric potential.

17. The method according to claim 1, wherein said motion data comprises timing data.

18. The method according to claim 1, wherein said physiological location is a cardiac location and said motion data is cardiac motion data, and further wherein said method comprises administering an electrical pulse to cardiac tissue of said body based on said cardiac motion data.

19. The method according to claim 18, wherein said method is a method of performing cardiac resynchronization therapy.

20. The method according to claim 1, wherein said body is a human body.

24. A computer readable storage medium having a processing program stored thereon, wherein said processing program operates a system according to claim 21 to perform a method according to claim 1.

21. A system for obtaining motion data for a physiological location of a body, said system comprising:

(a) a lead having first and second segmented electrode satellite structures;

(b) a processing element configured to;

(i) select said first segmented electrode satellite structure as a broadcasting satellite and said second segmented electrode satellite structure as a receiving satellite;

(ii) produce an electric field from said broadcasting satellite; and

(iii) detect a change in an induced electric potential on an electrode of said receiving satellite to obtain motion data for said physiological location.

22. A system according to claim 21, wherein said processing element is present in a control element of a housing and said lead is coupled to said housing at its proximal end.

23. The system according to claim 22, wherein said control element is configured to operate said system in a manner sufficient to achieve cardiac resynchronization.
