Abstract

An airbag cushion is disclosed for use in automotive protective systems. The airbag cushion includes a tube that may be restricted to prevent gas venting. A cord having a plurality of stoppers is coupled to the tube. Upon airbag deployment, the cord extends until taut or extends until the cushion encounters an obstruction. If pulled taut, the cord incrementally tightens the tube and restricts gas venting. If the cushion encounters an obstruction, the cord remains lax and the tube is able to vent gas.

Claims

1. An airbag module, comprising:

an inflatable airbag cushion;

a cinch tube disposed on the inflatable airbag cushion and circumventing an aperture disposed in the inflatable airbag cushion,

a sleeve extending around the majority of the perimeter of the cinch tube and having a sleeve aperture defined by a frame; and

a cinch cord extending out of the sleeve aperture and around a majority of the perimeter of the cinch tube with a portion of the cinch cord extending in the sleeve, wherein the cinch cord is coupled to the airbag such that upon inflatable airbag deployment with obstruction, the cinch cord does not fully extend and the cinch tube remains open, and upon inflatable airbag deployment without obstruction, the cinch cord extends and at least partially closes the cinch tube; and

wherein the portion of the cinch cord extending though the sleeve comprises a plurality of stoppers configured to pass through the sleeve aperture upon airbag deployment and to resist re-entry into the sleeve aperture after airbag deployment.

2. The airbag module of claim 1, wherein the plurality of stoppers are sized to permit the cinch cord to incrementally cinch the cinch tube.

3. The airbag module of claim 1, wherein the stoppers are flat and wedge shaped.

4. The airbag module of claim 1, wherein the stoppers are cone shaped.

5. The airbag module of claim 1, wherein each of the stoppers has a base which is wider than the sleeve aperture.

6. The airbag module of claim 1, wherein the cinch cord has an end which is attached to the cinch tube.

7. The airbag module of claim 1, wherein the sleeve has a second aperture and wherein the cinch cord extends out of the second aperture and enables the cinch tube to be cinched in two directions.

8. The airbag module of claim 1, wherein the frame comprises retainers extending toward the sleeve aperture, and tabs which define the sleeve aperture.

9. The airbag module of claim 1, wherein the cinch cord is coupled to an internal surface and the cinch cord is disposed within an airbag interior.

10. The airbag module of claim 1, further comprising a vent disposed on the airbag and adapted to vent gas during airbag deployment with and without obstruction.

11. The airbag module of claim 1, further comprising:

a second cinch tube disposed on the inflatable airbag cushion and circumventing a second aperture disposed in the inflatable airbag cushion,

a second sleeve extending around the majority of the perimeter of the second cinch tube and having a sleeve aperture defined by a frame; and

a cinch cord extending out of the second sleeve aperture and around a majority of the perimeter of the second cinch tube with a portion of the second cinch cord extending in the second sleeve, wherein the second cinch cord is coupled to the airbag such that upon inflatable airbag deployment with obstruction, the second cinch cord does not fully extend and the second cinch tube remains open, and upon inflatable airbag deployment without obstruction, the second cinch cord extends and at least partially closes the second cinch tube; and

wherein the portion of the second cinch cord extending though the sleeve comprises a plurality of stoppers configured to pass through the sleeve aperture of the second sleeve upon airbag deployment and to resist entry into the sleeve aperture of the second sleeve after airbag deployment due to the shape of the stoppers and the rigidity of the frame relative to the stoppers.

12. The airbag module of claim 11, wherein the first and second cinch tubes are symmetrically disposed on the inflatable airbag cushion.

13. The airbag module of claim 1, wherein the cinch tube has a rim which collapses onto itself to close the cinch tube when the cinch cord extends due to inflatable airbag deployment.

14. The airbag module of claim 1, wherein the cinch tube has a height which is about half of its diameter.

15. An airbag module, comprising:

an inflatable airbag cushion;

a cinch tube disposed on the inflatable airbag cushion and circumventing an aperture disposed in the inflatable airbag cushion,

a sleeve extending around the majority of the perimeter of the cinch tube and having a sleeve aperture defined by a frame; and

a cinch cord extending out of the sleeve aperture and around a majority of the perimeter of the cinch tube with a portion of the cinch cord extending in the sleeve, wherein the cinch cord is coupled to the airbag such that upon inflatable airbag deployment with obstruction, the cinch cord does not fully extend and the cinch tube remains open, and upon inflatable airbag deployment without obstruction, the cinch cord extends and at least partially closes the cinch tube; and

wherein the portion of the cinch cord extending though the sleeve comprises a plurality of stoppers configured to pass through the sleeve aperture upon airbag deployment and to resist re-entry into the sleeve aperture after airbag deployment due to the shape of the stoppers and the rigidity of the stoppers relative to any structures encountered by each stopper as each stopper passes through the sleeve aperture.

16. The airbag module of claim 15, wherein the structures encountered by each stopper as each stopper passes through the sleeve aperture only flex when at least a certain load is applied to the cinch cord and do not flex when subjected to a load lower than the certain load.

17. The airbag module of claim 15, wherein the plurality of stoppers are sized to permit the cinch cord to incrementally cinch the cinch tube.

18. The airbag module of claim 15, wherein the stoppers are cone shaped.

19. An airbag module, comprising:

an inflatable airbag cushion;

a cinch tube disposed on the inflatable airbag cushion and circumventing an aperture disposed in the inflatable airbag cushion,

a sleeve extending around the majority of the perimeter of the cinch tube and having a sleeve aperture; and

a cinch cord extending out of the sleeve aperture and around a majority of the perimeter of the cinch tube with a portion of the cinch cord extending in the sleeve, wherein the cinch cord is coupled to the airbag such that upon inflatable airbag deployment with obstruction, the cinch cord does not fully extend and the cinch tube remains open, and upon inflatable airbag deployment without obstruction, the cinch cord extends and at least partially closes the cinch tube; and

wherein the portion of the cinch cord extending though the sleeve comprises a plurality of stoppers having teeth configured to flex in order to pass through the sleeve aperture upon airbag deployment and to resist entry into the sleeve aperture after airbag deployment due to the shape of the stoppers and the rigidity of the frame relative to the stoppers.

20. The airbag module of claim 19, wherein the teeth only flex in order to pass through the sleeve aperture when at least a certain load is applied to the cinch cord and does not flex when subjected to a load lower than the certain load.

21. The airbag module of claim 19, wherein the plurality of stoppers are sized to permit the cinch cord to incrementally cinch the cinch tube.

22. The airbag module of claim 19, wherein the stoppers are flat and wedge shaped.

23. An airbag module, comprising:

an inflatable airbag cushion;

means for venting gas out of the airbag and circumventing an aperture disposed in the airbag; and

means for restricting gas venting by incrementally cinching the venting means to reduce the circumference of the venting means upon inflatable airbag deployment without obstruction and enabling the venting means to remain open upon inflatable airbag deployment with obstruction.
