Abstract

An automatic injection device including a housing element, at least one resilient element arranged to be located within the housing element, a syringe including at least one syringe piston, a needle guard adapted for selectable positioning with respect to the housing element and a selectable driving element adapted, when actuated, to be driven by the at least one resilient element for initially displacing the syringe relative to the housing element from a non-penetration position to a penetration position and thereafter displacing the at least one syringe piston in the syringe to effect drug delivery and displacing the needle guard into a needle guarding position.

Claims

1. An automatic injection device comprising:

a housing element;

at least one resilient element arranged to be located within said housing element;

a syringe including at least one syringe piston;

a needle guard adapted for selectable positioning with respect to said housing element; and

a selectable driving element adapted, when actuated, to be driven by said at least one resilient element for initially displacing said syringe relative to said housing element from a non-penetration position to a penetration position and thereafter displacing said at least one syringe piston in said syringe to effect drug delivery and displacing said needle guard into a needle guarding position.

22. An automatic injection device according to claim 1 and wherein said housing element includes at least one window permitting contents of said syringe to be viewed from outside said housing element.

23. An automatic injection device according to claim 1 and wherein said needle guard includes at least one window permitting contents of said syringe to be viewed from outside said needle guard.

24. An automatic injection device according to claim 1 and wherein said housing element includes at least one transparent portion permitting contents of said syringe to be viewed from outside said housing element.

25. An automatic injection device according to claim 1 and wherein said needle guard includes at least one transparent portion permitting contents of said syringe to be viewed from outside said needle guard.

2. An automatic injection device comprising:

a housing element;

at least one resilient element arranged to be located within said housing element;

a syringe including at least one syringe piston; and

a selectable driving element adapted, prior to being actuated, to retain said syringe in a non-penetration position and, when actuated, to be driven by said at least one resilient element for initially displacing said syringe relative to said housing element from a non-penetration position to a penetration position and thereafter displacing said at least one syringe piston in said syringe to effect drug delivery.

3. An automatic injection device according to claim 2 and also comprising a needle guard adapted for selectable positioning with respect to said housing element and wherein said selectable driving element is also operative for displacing said needle guard into a needle guarding position.

31. An automatic injection device according to claim 2 and wherein said housing element includes at least one window permitting contents of said syringe to be viewed from outside said housing element.

32. An automatic injection device according to claim 2 and wherein said needle guard includes at least one window permitting contents of said syringe to be viewed from outside said needle guard.

33. An automatic injection device according to claim 2 and wherein said housing element includes at least one transparent portion permitting contents of said syringe to be viewed from outside said housing element.

34. An automatic injection device according to claim 2 and wherein said needle guard includes at least one transparent portion permitting contents of said syringe to be viewed from outside said needle guard.

4. An automatic injection device comprising:

a housing element;

at least one resilient element arranged to be located within said housing element;

a syringe including at least one syringe piston;

a needle guard adapted for selectable positioning with respect to said housing element; and

a selectable driving element adapted, when actuated, to be driven by said at least one resilient element for displacing said syringe relative to said housing element from a non-penetration position to a penetration position,

said needle guard being operative to permit actuation of said selectable driving element for displacing said syringe relative to said housing element from said non-penetration position to said penetration position.

An automatic injection device according to claim 4 and wherein said selectable driving element is also operative when actuated, following suitable displacement of said needle guard relative to said housing element and resulting displacement of said syringe relative to said housing element from said non-penetration position to said penetration position, to be driven by said at least one resilient element for displacing said at least one syringe piston in said syringe to effect drug delivery.

35. An automatic injection device according to claim 4 and wherein said housing element includes at least one window permitting contents of said syringe to be viewed from outside said housing element.

36. An automatic injection device according to claim 4 and wherein said needle guard includes at least one window permitting contents of said syringe to be viewed from outside said needle guard.

37. An automatic injection device according to claim 4 and wherein said housing element includes at least one transparent portion permitting contents of said syringe to be viewed from outside said housing element.

38. An automatic injection device according to claim 4 and wherein said needle guard includes at least one transparent portion permitting contents of said syringe to be viewed from outside said needle guard.

6. An automatic injection device comprising:

a housing element;

at least one resilient element arranged to be located within said housing element;

a syringe including at least one syringe piston;

a selectable driving element adapted, when actuated, to be driven by said at least one resilient element for initially displacing said syringe relative to said housing element from a non-penetration position to a penetration position; and

a motion damper operative to limit impact on said syringe produced by motion of said selectable driving element.

7. An automatic injection device according to claim 6 wherein said selectable driving element is also operative for displacing said at least one syringe piston in said syringe to effect drug delivery and displacing said needle guard into a needle guarding position.

8. An automatic injection device according to claim 6 and wherein said motion damper is operative to limit impact on said at least one syringe piston produced by motion of said selectable driving element.

9. An automatic injection device according to claim 6 and wherein said motion damper is operative to limit impact on a flange of said syringe produced by motion of said selectable driving element.

10. An automatic injection device according to claim 6 and wherein said motion damper comprises at least one elastomeric element.

11. An automatic injection device according to claim 10 and wherein said at least one elastomeric element is operative to damp relative axial motion between said housing element and said selectable driving element.

An automatic injection device according to claim 10 and wherein relative axial motion between said at least one elastomeric element and a surface of varying cross-sectional area produces an extent of damping which varies with the relative axial positions of said housing element and said selectable driving element.

13. An automatic injection device according to claim 10 and wherein said motion damper provides decreasing damping as said selectable driving element moves forwardly relative to said housing element.

An automatic injection device according to claim 13 and wherein said decreasing damping is produced by engagement of said at least one elastomeric element with a surface of decreasing cross-sectional area as a function of forward displacement of said selectable driving element relative to said housing element.

39. An automatic injection device according to claim 6 and wherein said housing element includes at least one window permitting contents of said syringe to be viewed from outside said housing element.

40. An automatic injection device according to claim 6 and wherein said needle guard includes at least one window permitting contents of said syringe to be viewed from outside said needle guard.

41. An automatic injection device according to claim 6 and wherein said housing element includes at least one transparent portion permitting contents of said syringe to be viewed from outside said housing element.

42. An automatic injection device according to claim 6 and wherein said needle guard includes at least one transparent portion permitting contents of said syringe to be viewed from outside said needle guard.

15. An automatic injection device comprising:

a housing element;

at least one resilient element arranged to be located within said housing element;

a syringe including at least one syringe piston;

a plunger operative for displacing said at least one syringe piston, said plunger extending in and rearwardly of said housing element; and

a selectable driving element adapted, when actuated, to be driven by said at least one resilient element for initially displacing said syringe relative to said housing element from a non-penetration position to a penetration position.

16. An automatic injection device according to claim 15 and wherein said selectable driving element is also operative for displacing said at least one syringe piston in said syringe to effect drug delivery.

17. An automatic injection device according to claim 15 and wherein said plunger is manually operable for displacing said at least one syringe piston.

18. An automatic injection device according to claim 15 and also comprising a vial adaptor adapted for operative association with said syringe and with a drug vial for effecting fluid transfer between said syringe and said vial.

28. An automatic injection device according to claim 18 and wherein said vial adaptor includes a rearward facing portion configured such that upon mounting of said vial adaptor, rearward movement of said needle guard is prevented.

43. An automatic injection device according to claim 15 and wherein said housing element includes at least one window permitting contents of said syringe to be viewed from outside said housing element.

44. An automatic injection device according to claim 15 and wherein said needle guard includes at least one window permitting contents of said syringe to be viewed from outside said needle guard.

45. An automatic injection device according to claim 15 and wherein said housing element includes at least one transparent portion permitting contents of said syringe to be viewed from outside said housing element.

46. An automatic injection device according to claim 15 and wherein said needle guard includes at least one transparent portion permitting contents of said syringe to be viewed from outside said needle guard.

19. An automatic injection device comprising:

a housing element;

a syringe including at least one syringe piston;

a plunger operative for displacing said at least one syringe piston, said plunger extending in and rearwardly of said housing element; and

a selectable driving element adapted, when actuated, for initially displacing said syringe relative to said housing element from a non-penetration position to a penetration position; and

a vial adaptor adapted for operative association with said syringe and with a drug vial for effecting fluid transfer between said syringe and said vial.

47. An automatic injection device according to claim 19 and wherein said housing element includes at least one window permitting contents of said syringe to be viewed from outside said housing element.

48. An automatic injection device according to claim 19 and wherein said needle guard includes at least one window permitting contents of said syringe to be viewed from outside said needle guard.

49. An automatic injection device according to claim 19 and wherein said housing element includes at least one transparent portion permitting contents of said syringe to be viewed from outside said housing element.

50. An automatic injection device according to claim 19 and wherein said needle guard includes at least one transparent portion permitting contents of said syringe to be viewed from outside said needle guard.

20. An automatic injection device comprising:

a housing element;

at least one resilient element arranged to be located within said housing element;

a syringe; and

a needle guard adapted for positioning with respect to said syringe in a mutually locked orientation, whereby displacement of said needle guard relative to said housing requires corresponding displacement of said syringe

51. An automatic injection device according to claim 20 and wherein said housing element includes at least one window permitting contents of said syringe to be viewed from outside said housing element.

52. An automatic injection device according to claim 20 and wherein said needle guard includes at least one window permitting contents of said syringe to be viewed from outside said needle guard.

53. An automatic injection device according to claim 20 and wherein said housing element includes at least one transparent portion permitting contents of said syringe to be viewed from outside said housing element.

54. An automatic injection device according to claim 20 and wherein said needle guard includes at least one transparent portion permitting contents of said syringe to be viewed from outside said needle guard.

21. An automatic injection device comprising:

a housing element;

at least one resilient element arranged to be located within said housing element;

a syringe; and

a needle guard adapted for positioning with respect to said syringe and with respect to said housing element in a mutually locked needle guarding orientation, whereby displacement of said needle guard in a first direction relative to said housing is prevented by engagement of said needle guard with said syringe and displacement of said needle guard in a second direction relative to said housing, opposite to said first direction, is prevented by engagement of said needle guard with said housing element.

55. An automatic injection device according to claim 21 and wherein said housing element includes at least one window permitting contents of said syringe to be viewed from outside said housing element.

56. An automatic injection device according to claim 21 and wherein said needle guard includes at least one window permitting contents of said syringe to be viewed from outside said needle guard.

57. An automatic injection device according to claim 21 and wherein said housing element includes at least one transparent portion permitting contents of said syringe to be viewed from outside said housing element.

58. An automatic injection device according to claim 21 and wherein said needle guard includes at least one transparent portion permitting contents of said syringe to be viewed from outside said needle guard.

26. An automatic injection device comprising:

a housing element;

at least one resilient element arranged to be located within said housing element;

a syringe including at least one syringe piston;

a plunger operative to selectably drive said at least one syringe piston in axial motion relative to said housing element; and

a selectable driving element threadably engaging said plunger and adapted, when actuated, to be driven by said at least one resilient element for initially axially displacing said syringe relative to said housing element from a non-penetration position to a penetration position and thereafter displacing said at least one syringe piston in said syringe to effect drug delivery, wherein manual rotation of said plunger relative to said selectable driving element also produces axial movement of said plunger.

27. An automatic injection device comprising:

a housing element;

at least one resilient element arranged to be located within said housing element;

a syringe including at least one syringe piston;

a plunger operative to selectably drive said at least one syringe piston in axial motion relative to said housing element; and

a selectable driving element adapted, when actuated, to be driven by said at least one resilient element for initially displacing said syringe relative to said housing element from a non-penetration position to a penetration position and at least partially coincidentally therewith engaging said plunger.

29. An automatic injection device comprising:

a housing element;

a syringe including at least one syringe piston;

a needle guard adapted for selectable positioning with respect to said housing element; and

a resilient selectable driving element adapted, when actuated, for displacing said syringe relative to said housing element from a non-penetration position to a penetration position,

said needle guard being operative to permit actuation of said selectable driving element for displacing said syringe relative to said housing element from said non-penetration position to said penetration position.

30. An automatic injection device comprising:

a housing element;

a syringe including at least one syringe piston;

a needle guard adapted for selectable positioning with respect to said housing element; and

a selectable driving element adapted, when actuated, to be driven for displacing said syringe relative to said housing element from a non-penetration position to a penetration position,

said needle guard being operative to permit displacing said syringe relative to said housing element from said non-penetration position to said penetration position.
