Abstract

A universal distributed search system allows users to find and distribute search results (possibly including advertisements) to those with whom they communicate. The search results can be easily distributed by the user via a simple interface that allows the search results to be easily added to the user'"'"'s content. In one implementation, the search results may be automatically generated by the system based on user input to a content creation application.

Claims

1. A content creation application comprising:

a first interface configured to facilitate composition of a message by a user;

logic to automatically generate a search query based on the message; and

a second interface configured to;

display search results relating to the search query, and

receive selections of the search results from the user, the content creation application automatically incorporating, in response to the selections, the selected ones of the search results into the message in the first interface.

2. The content creation application of claim 1, wherein the content creation application additionally comprises:

logic to submit the generated search query to a network search component.

3. The content creation application of claim 2, wherein the network search component includes a web search component, an image search component, a video search component, a local search component, a geographic search component, a product search component, a listing search component, an email search component, a blog search component, a message group search component, a news search component, a digitized content search component, a desktop search component, or an advertisement search component.

4. The content creation application of claim 1, wherein the generated search query is submitted to a plurality of network search components.

5. The context creation application of claim 1, wherein the logic to automatically generate a search query includes:

logic to implement entity recognition techniques on the message of the user.

6. The content creation application of claim 5, wherein the logic to automatically generate a search query generates the search query when an entity returned by the logic to implement entity recognition matches predetermined criteria.

7. The content creation application of claim 6, wherein the predetermined criteria includes criteria relating to a predetermined type of entity or criteria relating to a match from a list of entities.

8. The content creation application of claim 5, wherein the logic to implement entity recognition techniques is trained to recognize products or locations in the message.

9. The content creation application of claim 5, wherein the logic to implement entity recognition techniques is trained to take into account a type of content creation application that is used by the user.

10. The content creation application of claim 9, wherein the content creation application includes an email application, an instant messaging application, a blog post creation application, an application for posting messages to Internet message boards, or a web site creation application.

11. The content creation application of claim 5, wherein the logic to implement entity recognition techniques is trained to be biased towards recognize entities associated with a user profile.

12. The content creation application of claim 1, wherein the logic to automatically generate a search query generates the search query in response to a triggering event.

13. The content creation application of claim 12, wherein the triggering event includes a predetermined user action or user inactivity for a predetermined period.

14. A method comprising:

providing an interface configured to facilitate composition of text by a user;

automatically generating a search query based on the text;

automatically initiating a search based on the search query;

receiving results of the search;

displaying the results of the search in the interface, the displayed results of the search each including a selection object;

receiving selections of the selection objects from the user; and

associating the results of the search that correspond to the selections of the selection objects with the text in the interface.

15. The method of claim 14, wherein the interface includes:

a first sidebar displayed in the interface for displaying results of the search, the first sidebar including a button that, when selected by the user, removes the first sidebar from the interface.

16. The method of claim 15, wherein the interface further includes:

a second sidebar displayed in the interface for receiving a second search query that is manually entered by the user.

17. The method of claim 14, wherein automatically initiating a search based on the search query includes:

transmitting the search query to one or more network search components, the network search components including an image search component, a video search component, a local search component, a geographic search component, a product search component, a listing search component, an email search component, a blog search component, a message group search component, a news search component, a digitized content search component, a desktop search component, or an advertisement search component.

18. The method of claim 14, wherein automatically generating a search query based on the text includes:

generating the search query using entity recognition techniques based on the text.

19. The content creation application of claim 18, wherein automatically generating the search query includes generating the search query in response to a triggering event.

20. The content creation application of claim 19, wherein the triggering event includes a predetermined user action or user inactivity for a predetermined period.

21. The method of claim 18, wherein the entity recognition techniques are trained to recognize products or locations in the text.

22. The method of claim 18, wherein the entity recognition techniques are trained to take into account a type of the application provided by the interface.

23. The method of claim 14, wherein automatically initiating the search includes transmitting the search query to a plurality of search services, the plurality of search services returning one or more search result types.

24. The content creation application of claim 23, wherein the search result types include web search results, image search results, video search results, local search results, geographic search results, product search results, listing search results, email search results, blog search results, message group search results, news search results, digitized content search results, desktop search results, or advertisements.

25. The method of claim 14, wherein the interface configured to facilitate composition of a message by the user includes one of an email interface, an instant messaging interface, a blog post interface, an interface for an application for posting messages to Internet message boards, or a web site creation interface.

26. A computer-readable medium containing instructions for execution by one or more processing devices, the computer-readable medium comprising:

instructions for generating a search query based on non-search query information entered by a user;

instructions for initiating a search based on the generated search query;

instructions for receiving results of the search;

instructions for displaying the results of the search to the user, the displayed results of the search each including a first graphical object;

instructions for receiving selections of the results of the search based on selections of the first graphical objects; and

instructions for automatically incorporating results of the search with the information entered by the user on the selections of the results of the search.

27. The computer-readable medium of claim 26, wherein the selections of the first graphical objects each consist of a single mouse click or a drag and drop operation relating to one of the first graphical objects.

28. The computer-readable medium of claim 26, wherein the instructions for initiating the search based on the search query additionally include instructions for transmitting the search query to a plurality of search services, the search services returning one or more search result types.

29. The computer-readable medium of claim 28, wherein the search result types include web search results, image search results, video search results, local search results, geographic search results, product search results, listing search results, email search results, blog search results, message group search results, news search results, digitized content search results, desktop search results, or advertisements.

30. The computer-readable medium of claim 26, further comprising:

instructions for implementing entity recognition techniques based on the information entered by the user.

31. The computer-readable medium of claim 30, wherein the instructions for implementing entity recognition techniques implement entity recognition techniques trained to recognize products or locations in the information entered by the user.
