1. A data collection and transmission system, comprising:
- at least one of a sensor and user interface operable to collect information regarding vehicle state and/or vehicle occupants;
at least one slot operable to receive a selected network card, the at least one slot being configured to receive cards of multiple private and/or public networks;
a plurality of sets of connection managers and monitors corresponding to different types and/or origins of network cards, each set comprising at least one connection manager to interact with the corresponding network card in establishing a connection with the corresponding wireless network and connection monitor to monitor a state of the connection and at least one of the connection manager and monitor of a first set being different than a corresponding at least one of the connection manager and monitor of a second set; and
a system manager operable to determine a type and/or origin of network card and select and cause execution of the corresponding connection manager and monitor set to set up a connection with the network corresponding to the determined type and/or origin of network card.

Abstract
The present invention is directed generally to a smart modem device for vehicular and roadside applications for remote data collection and transmission to a central data collection and processing facility. The modem includes a number of sets of connection managers and monitors for performing specified tasks with respect to connections with various networks. Each set of connection managers and monitors is different and corresponds to a selected card type and/or network service.

1. A data collection and transmission system, comprising:

at least one of a sensor and user interface operable to collect information regarding vehicle state and/or vehicle occupants;
at least one slot operable to receive a selected network card, the at least one slot being configured to receive cards of multiple private and/or public networks;
a plurality of sets of connection managers and monitors corresponding to different types and/or origins of network cards, each set comprising at least one connection manager to interact with the corresponding network card in establishing a connection with the corresponding wireless network and connection monitor to monitor a state of the connection and at least one of the connection manager and monitor of a first set being different than a corresponding at least one of the connection manager and monitor of a second set; and

10. A data collection and transmission method, comprising:

at least one of a sensor and user interface collecting information regarding vehicle state and/or vehicle occupants;
at least one slot receiving a selected network card, the at least one slot being configured to receive cards of multiple networks;
determining a type and/or origin of the selected network card; and
selecting, for the selected network card and based on the determined type and/or origin, a set of a connection manager and a connection monitor from among a plurality of sets of connection managers and monitors corresponding to different types and/or origins of network cards, wherein the connection manager interacts with the corresponding network card in establishing a connection with the corresponding wireless network and the connection monitor monitors a state of the connection and at least one of the connection manager and monitor of a first set being different than a corresponding at least one of the connection manager and monitor of a second set. - View Dependent Claims (11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18)

19. A data collection and transmission method, comprising:

collecting information regarding vehicle state and/or vehicle occupants;
establishing a first connection with a first network to transmit at least some of the collected information to a remote server via that network;
thereafter determining at least one of a status and health of the first connection;
when the first connection is at least one of down and unhealthy, requesting the removal of power to a selected wireless card positioned in a slot;
when the request is denied, terminating execution of a communication initiation application; and
after terminating execution of the communication initiation application, again requesting the removal of power to the selected wireless card. - View Dependent Claims (20, 21)
