Digitized bank checks validated by digital signatures
First Claim
1. In a process wherein original computer files, having original content, are generated;
- 2) an original digital signature is generated for each original file;
3) said original files are combined into a single archival file, wherein some original content is modified; and
4) modification of content of an original file alters the digital signature of that file, a method comprising;
a) deriving and storing recovery data; and
b) using the recovery data to recover an original file and its original content from the archival file.

Abstract
A system for handling files containing digitized images, such as digitized bank checks. Four digitized image-files are obtained for each check: front and back at the beginning of a process, and front and back at the end of the process. Four digital signatures are generated, one for each image-file. The four image-files are to be consolidated into a single composite file. However, for technical reasons, the content of the image-files must be altered somewhat. Thus, if the image-files are later extracted from the composite file, the extracted files will not correspond to the original image-files, and will produce different digital signatures. The invention allows the original image-files to be accurately extracted from the composite file.

2) the original files are compatible with a computer program A;
3) bitmaps of several original files are combined into a composite file;
4) at least one pointer in the composite file differs from a corresponding original pointer; and
5) the composite file is compatible with program A, a method comprising;
a) storing data which allows recovery of the original pointers; and
b) using the data, recovering an original file, including its original pointers, from the composite file. - View Dependent Claims (11, 12, 13, 14)

15. In a method wherein separate digitized files of bank checks are consolidated into a single archival file, a reading program is able to read and display images of the bank checks using both the separate files and the archival file, an authenticating program will produce
i) a digital signature from a separate file, and ii) a different digital signature from the separate file as extracted from the archival file, a process comprising: -
a) identifying data in the files which becomes altered when the separate files are added to the archival file; and
b) storing information which enables a program to re-construct the separate files from the archival file.

16. In a method wherein computer files containing identifiable parameters having original values are consolidated into a single file wherein some original values are converted into altered values, a process comprising:
-
a) creating a recovery means for recovering original values of altered values; and
b) extracting a file from the single file, and using the recovery means to restore the original values to the altered parameters.

17. A method of handling computer files, comprising:
-
a) accepting i) original file A containing item A at a position A; and
ii) original file B containing item B at a position B;
b) combining the original files A and B into a single file C, wherein i) position A is altered to A1 within file C, or ii) position B is altered to B1 within file C, or iii) both (b)(i) and (b)(ii); and
c) utilizing a process to recover original file A, original file B, or both, from file C. - View Dependent Claims (18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23)

24. A method, comprising:
-
a) creating a digitized image of a bank check;
b) placing the digitized image into an original file which i) conforms to a published tagged image format;
ii) contains pointers which allow a file reader to locate predetermined data within the preliminary file;
c) repeating steps (a) and (b) to create several different original files, each corresponding to a respective bank check;
d) modifying pointers in the original files to produce modified files;
e) placing the modified files into a composite file, wherein i) the modified pointers are effective to allow a file reader to locate the respective predetermined data within the composite file; and
ii) the modified pointers are not effective to allow a file reader to locate the respective predetermined data within the original files. - View Dependent Claims (25)
