Abstract

Messages are handled by a determination that an incoming message is in response to a previous outgoing message, where the previous outgoing message is sent from the computing device. The previous outgoing message is identified, as stored on the computing device. Data that indicates information relating to receiving the incoming message is provided with at least (i) a listing of the previous outgoing message, or (ii) a body of the previous outgoing message

Claims

1. A method for handling messages on a computing device, the method comprising:

determining that an incoming message is in response to a previous outgoing message, the previous outgoing message being sent from the computing device;

identifying the previous outgoing message, as stored on the computing device; and

providing data that indicates information relating to receiving the incoming message with at least (i) a listing of the previous outgoing message, or (ii) a body of the previous outgoing message.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the incoming message originates from a third-party that handled the previous outgoing message.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the incoming message originates from an intended recipient of the previous outgoing message.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein determining that an incoming message is in response to a previous outgoing message sent from the computing device includes determining that the incoming message indicates a delivery status of the previous outgoing message.

5. The method of claim 4, wherein the delivery status is provided from a third-party that monitors messages exchanged from a network used by the computing device.

6. The method of claim 5, wherein the computing device uses a cellular network to exchange messages, including receiving the incoming message and transmitting the previous outgoing message, and wherein determining that the incoming message indicates a delivery status includes receiving the incoming message from a cellular network service provider.

7. The method of claim 6, wherein determining that an incoming message is in response to a previous outgoing message includes determining that an incoming Short Message Service (SMS) message is in response to one or more previous outgoing SMS messages.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein determining that an incoming message is in response to a previous outgoing message includes determining that an incoming message of a type selected from a group consisting of (i) Short Message Service message (SMS), (ii) email, (ii) Multi-Media Message Service (MMS) message, or (iv) Instant Message, is in response to a previous outgoing message of that type.

The method of claim 1, wherein determining that an incoming message is in response to a previous outgoing message includes identifying an identifier of the incoming message, and determining that the identifier of the incoming message relates to a known identifier of the previous outgoing message.

10. The method of claim 9, wherein the incoming message and the previous outgoing message are each Short Message Service (SMS) formats.

11. The method of claim 10, wherein identifying the identifier of the incoming message includes identifying a hardware layer identifier of the incoming message, and wherein determining that the identifier of the incoming message relates to a known identifier of the previous outgoing message includes mapping the hardware layer identifier to an application layer identifier of the previous outgoing message.

12. The method of claim 1, wherein providing data that indicates information relating to receiving the incoming message includes generating a graphic that conveys a delivery status of the previous outgoing message, wherein the delivery status is determined from the incoming message.

13. The method of claim 1, wherein providing data that indicates information relating to receiving the incoming message includes displaying content from the incoming message with a body of the previous outgoing message.

14. The method of claim 1, wherein providing data that indicates information relating to receiving the incoming message is provided in a sent item folder, and wherein the method further comprises providing that an inbox folder listing incoming messages does not include the incoming message that is in response to the previous outgoing message.

15. A system for enabling a computing device to handle messages, the system comprising:

a bridge component configured to;

(i) record application layer identifiers generated by one or more applications for newly created messages, (ii) record hardware layer identifiers for each message generated by the one or more applications transmitted from the computing device, and (iii) record data relating each hardware layer identifier to a corresponding application layer identifier;

wherein for an incoming message, the bridge component is configured to perform or enable;

(i) identification of the hardware layer identifier of the incoming message, (ii) determination of any previous outgoing message that has a corresponding hardware layer identifier, (iii) determination of the application layer identifier of the previous outgoing message, and (iv) identification of a location of the previous outgoing message using the application layer identifier; and

a message modifier component that modifies at least a listing or a body of the previous outgoing message based on information provided by the incoming message.

16. The system of claim 15, wherein the bridge component is configured to record application layer identifiers and hardware identifiers generated by a messaging application selected from a group consisting of:

(i) Short Message Service (SMS) messaging application, (ii) email application, (iii) Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS) messaging application, and (iv) text messaging application.

17. The system of claim 15, wherein the message modifier generates a graphic feature to indicate the information provided by the incoming message, the graphic feature being displayed with either the listing or the body of the previous outgoing message.

18. The system of claim 17, wherein the graphic feature indicates a delivery status of the previous outgoing message.

19. A method for handling messages on a computing device, the method comprising:

recording transmission of an outgoing message transmitted to a plurality of intended destinations;

determining that one or more incoming messages are in response to the outgoing message, wherein each of the one or more incoming messages contains delivery status information for the outgoing message as transmitted to one or more of the plurality of intended destinations; and

generating graphical data that indicates information relating to the delivery status of the outgoing message transmitted to all of the plurality of intended destinations based on the delivery status information of each of the one or more incoming messages.

20. The method of claim 19, wherein the generating graphical data includes providing the graphical data with at least (i) a listing of the outgoing message, or (ii) a body of the outgoing message.

21. The method of claim 19, wherein the outgoing message and the one or more incoming messages are each Short Message Service messages.

22. The method of claim 19, wherein generating graphical data includes indicating a failed transmission for the outgoing message if the delivery status information of the one or more incoming messages indicates that the outgoing message failed to reach any of the plurality of intended destinations.

23. The method of claim 22, wherein generating graphical data includes indicating a successful transmission for the outgoing message if the delivery status information of the one or more incoming messages indicates that the outgoing message successfully reached each and every one of the plurality of intended destinations.

24. A computer readable medium carrying instructions for handling messages on a computing device, the instructions including instructions, that when executed by one or more processors, cause the one or more processors to perform steps comprising:

determining that an incoming message is in response to a previous outgoing message, the previous outgoing message being sent from the computing device;

identifying the previous outgoing message, as stored on the computing device; and

providing data that indicates information relating to receiving the incoming message with at least (i) a listing of the previous outgoing message, or (ii) a body of the previous outgoing message.
