Abstract

An airway implant device for maintaining and/or creating an opening in air passageways is disclosed. Methods of using the device are also disclosed. The airway implant device comprises an actuator element to control the opening of an air passageway. Preferably the actuator element is an electroactive polymer element. Energizing of the electroactive polymer element provides support for the walls in order to prevent the collapse of an air passageway. Some embodiments of the invention include a sensor capable of sensing the possible occurrence of an apneic event and activating the actuator element of the airway implant device. Some embodiments include a housing designed to conform to the shape of the palate. Some embodiments include an attachment element to secure the device to tissue. Methods of treating airway disorders such as sleep apnea and snoring with the airway implant device are disclosed herein.

Claims

1. An airway implant device comprising an implanted portion comprising an actuator element and a housing, the housing comprising at least one energizing element adapted and configured to energize said actuator element and said actuator element adapted and configured to support an air passageway.

2. The airway implant device of claim 1 wherein the actuator element comprises an electroactive polymer.

3. The airway implant device of claim 1 wherein the energizing element comprises a first inductor, the first inductor being encased by said housing, and wherein the actuator element is adapted and configured to support an opening of an air passageway.

4. The device of claim 1 wherein the housing comprises an acrylic, polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA), Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS), polyurethane, polycarbonate, cellulose acetate, nylon, a thermoplastic material, or a combination thereof.

5. The airway implant device of claim 1 wherein the housing comprises a superior side and an inferior side.

6. The device of claim 5 wherein said superior side of said housing comports to the shape of a hard palate.

7. The device of claim 5 wherein said superior side of said housing is cast from an impression of a hard palate.

8. The device of claim 5 wherein said superior side of said housing is concave.

9. The device of claim 5 wherein said superior side of said housing is convex.

10. The device of claim 5 wherein the superior side of said housing comprises at least two bumps, said bumps being adapted and configured to lay on each of a lateral side of a hard palate ridge.

11. The device of claim 5 wherein said superior side of said housing is a substantially smooth rounded surface.

12. The device of claim 5 wherein said inferior side of said housing is a substantially smooth rounded surface.

13. The device of claim 5 wherein the implant device is adapted and configured to be implanted in a palate.

14. The device of claim 5 further comprising at least one suture wherein the suture is capable of securing the implant to a tissue.

15. The device of claim 5 further comprising an attachment element, wherein the attachment element is adapted and configured to fix the implant device position within a tissue.

16. The device of claim 5 further comprising an attachment element wherein the attachment element is adapted and configured to secure the implant device to a tissue.

17. The device of claim 16 wherein the attachment element is at least one of a T-shape, triangular shape, circular shape, L-shape, and a Z-shape.

18. The device of claim 16 wherein the attachment element is at the anterior end of the implant and is capable of securing the position of the implant.

19. The device of claim 16 wherein the attachment element comprises a bioabsorbable material.

20. The device of claim 16 wherein the attachment element comprises at least one of polylactic acid, polyglycolic acid, poly(dioxanone), Poly(lactide-co-glycolide), polyhydroxybutyrate, polyester, poly(amino acid), poly(trimethylene carbonate) copolymer, poly (ε

-caprolactone) homopolymer.poly (ε

-caprolactone) copolymer, polyanhydride, polyorthoester, polyphosphazene, a bioabsorbable polymer, or a combination thereof.

21. The device of claim 16 wherein the attachment element is adapted and configured to allow a suture to pass through it to fix the implant device position and secure the attachment element to the tissue.

22. The device of claim 16 wherein the attachment element comprises at least one hole adapted and configured to allow a suture to pass through said hole and through a tissue to fix the implant device position and secure the attachment element to the tissue.

23. The device of claim 16 wherein the attachment element comprises an adhesive, wherein the adhesive secures the implant to the tissue and fixes the implant position.

24. The device of claim 23 wherein the adhesive comprises a cyanoacrylate, 2-octylcyanoacrylate, N-butyl-2-cyanoacrylate, or a combination thereof.

25. The device of claim 16 wherein the attachment element comprises at least one anchor.

26. The device of claim 25 wherein the anchor is adapted and configured to allow delivery and removal of the implant device with minimal damage to a tissue.

27. The device of claim 25 wherein the anchor is curved.

28. The device of claim 1 wherein the housing comprises a roughened surface.

29. The device of claim 28 wherein the roughened surface is adapted and configured to increase friction.

30. The device of claim 28 wherein the housing is formed by a casting process and wherein said roughened surface is created during the casting process.

31. The device of claim 28 wherein the roughened surface induces fibrosis.

32. The device of claim 1 wherein the actuator element is adapted and configured to be implanted in a soft palate.

33. The device of claim 1 wherein the housing is adapted and configured to be implanted inferior to a hard palate.

34. The device of claim 1 wherein the energizing element comprises connecting elements comprising a first contact and a second contact wherein the contacts connect the actuator element and the inductor and the contacts have opposing charges.

35. The device of claim 34 wherein the housing is adapted and configured to encase the contacts.

36. The device of claim 34 wherein the connecting element comprises a non-corrosive conductive material.

37. The device of claim 34 wherein the connecting element comprises platinum, gold, silver, stainless steel, conductive carbon, or a combination thereof.

38. The device of claim 34 wherein the actuator element is adapted and configured to stiffen when a charge is applied to the connecting element.

39. The device of claim 34 wherein the actuator element is adapted and configured to stiffen in one direction when a charge is applied to the connecting element.

40. The device of claim 34 wherein the actuator element is adapted and configured to deflect when a charge is applied to the connecting element.

41. The device of claim 34 wherein the first contact faces in the inferior direction and the second contact faces in the superior direction.

42. The device of claim 1 further comprising a non-implanted portion.

43. The device of claim 42 wherein the non-implanted portion comprises a retainer, said retainer comprising a dental retainer material.

44. The device of claim 42 wherein the non-implanted portion comprises a retainer, said retainer comprising a acrylate, polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA), polycarbonate, nylon or a combination thereof.

45. The device of claim 42 wherein the non-implanted portion comprises a power source and a second inductor adapted and configured to connect to the power source.

46. The device of claim 45 wherein the power source is replaceable.

47. The device of claim 45 wherein the power source is rechargeable, and wherein the non-implanted portion comprises ball clamps comprising two exposed portions, said ball clamps adapted and configured to connect to the rechargeable power source, whereby the exposed portions can recharge the power source.

48. The device of claim 45 wherein replacing and/or recharging the power source is necessary no more frequently than once per year.

49. The device of claim 45 wherein replacing and/or recharging the power source is necessary no more frequently than once every six months.

50. The device of claim 45 wherein replacing or recharging the power source is necessary no more frequently than once every three months.

51. The device of claim 45 wherein the replacing or recharging the power source is necessary no more frequently than daily.

52. The device of claim 45 wherein the power source is designed to be replaced or recharged per a specified time interval.

53. The device of claim 45 wherein the power source comprises a battery.

54. The device of claim 53 wherein the battery is a rechargeable type, a removeable type, a replaceable type, or a combination thereof.

55. The device of claim 53 wherein the battery is a lithium-ion battery, a lithium-ion polymer battery, a silver-iodide battery, a lead acid battery, a high energy density battery, or a combination thereof.

56. The device of claim 45 wherein the energizing element comprises a first inductor, wherein said second inductor of said non-implanted portion transfers energy to said first inductor, and wherein said first inductor energizes said actuator element.

57. The device of claim 56 wherein said implant comprises a positive contact and a negative contact wherein the first inductor transmits energy to the actuator element through the contacts.

58. The device of claim 45 wherein the non-implanted portion comprises a seal wherein the seal is waterproof and is adapted and configured to seal off the power source and the second inductor from liquids.
