Abstract

A liquid crystal display having electrodes on a single substrate. A transparent planar electrode elongated in the transverse direction is formed on the inner surface of a substrate, and an insulating film is deposited thereon. A plurality of linear electrodes, which are elongated in the longitudinal direction and either transparent or opaque, are formed on the insulating film. Potential difference between the planar and the linear electrodes generated by applying voltages to the electrodes yields an electric field. The electric field is symmetrical with respect to the longitudinal central line of the linear electrodes, and has parabolic or semi-elliptical lines of force having a center on a boundary line between the planar and the linear electrodes. The line of force on the planar and the linear electrodes and on the boundary line between the planar and the linear electrodes has the vertical and the horizontal components, and the liquid crystal molecules are re-arranged to have a twist angle and a tilt angle. The polarization of the incident light varies due to the rearrangement of the liquid crystal molecules.

Claims

1. A liquid crystal display (LCD), comprising:

a first substrate having a plurality of gate lines and a plurality of data lines;

a second substrate facing the first substrate;

a liquid crystal layer formed between the first substrate and second substrate;

a plurality of pixel regions formed between the first substrate and the second substrate and districted by the gate lines and data lines;

a plurality of linear type pixel electrodes formed in the pixel regions, respectively, on the first substrate; and

a plurality of planar common electrodes formed in the pixel regions, respectively, on the first substrate,

wherein each of the linear type pixel electrodes overlaps with one of the planar common electrodes.

2. The LCD of claim 1, wherein the plurality of planar common electrodes is not overlapped with the plurality of gate lines and the plurality of data lines.

3. The LCD of claim 1, further comprising a gate insulating layer formed between the pixel electrodes and the common electrodes.

4. The LCD of claim 3, wherein the gate lines and the planar common electrodes are formed on the first substrate,

the gate insulating layer is formed on the gate lines and the planar common electrodes, and

the pixel electrodes are formed on the gate insulating layer.

5. The LCD of claim 4, wherein a plurality of storage capacitors are formed in the regions between the pixel electrodes and the planar common electrodes.

6. The LCD of claim 1, further comprising a main connection connecting the plurality of planar common electrodes to each other.

7. The LCD of claim 6, wherein the main connection and at least one of the data lines cross each other.

8. The LCD of claim 6, wherein the main connection is located on the common electrodes.

9. The LCD of claim 1, further comprising:

a light blocking film formed on the first substrate covering a region between the data line and the common electrodes and the pixel electrodes adjacent to the data line.

10. The LCD of claim 1, further comprising:

a plurality of color filters formed on the second substrate; and

a black matrix formed on the second substrate and having a plurality of openings exposing the color filter.

11. The LCD of claim 10, wherein areas of the openings vary depending on colors of the color filters exposed by the openings.

12. The LCD of claim 11, wherein an area of an opening exposing a blue color filter is greater than an area of an opening exposing a red color filter and an area of an opening exposing a green color filter.

13. The LCD of claim 9, wherein part of the light blocking film is formed on the common electrode.

The LCD of claim 1, wherein the liquid crystal layer comprises a plurality of liquid crystal molecules, and twist angles and tilt angles of the liquid crystal molecules in each pixel region are varied by an electric field formed when voltages are applied to the common electrode and the linear type pixel electrode.

15. The LCD of claim 1, wherein the plurality of linear type pixel electrodes are parallel to each other with a distance between adjacent pixel electrodes, and are electrically connected to each other.

16. A liquid crystal display (LCD), comprising:

a first substrate having a plurality of gate lines and a plurality of data lines;

a second substrate facing the first substrate;

a liquid crystal layer formed between the first substrate and second substrate;

a linear type pixel electrode formed on the first substrate; and

a planar electrode formed on the first substrate,

wherein the linear type pixel electrode is overlapped with the planar electrode.

17. The LCD of claim 16, further comprising a gate insulating layer formed between the pixel electrode and the planar electrode.

18. The LCD of claim 17, wherein the pixel electrode is located on the gate insulating layer, and the planar electrode is located under the gate insulating layer.
