Abstract

A wireless mobile handset includes an antenna array. The antenna array includes a passive element disposed on a first portion of a dielectric substrate and an active element disposed on a second portion of the dielectric substrate. The passive element is configured to operate in a reflective mode to produce a bi-directional radiation pattern.

Claims

1. A wireless mobile handset comprising an antenna array, the antenna array comprising:

a passive element disposed on a first portion of a dielectric substrate,

an active element disposed on a second portion of the dielectric substrate;

wherein the passive element is configured to operate in a reflective mode to produce a bidirectional radiation pattern.

2. The handset of claim 1, wherein the antenna array further comprises a ground structure.

3. The handset of claim 2 wherein the antenna array further comprises a microelectronics module disposed between the passive element and the ground structure.

4. The handset of claim 3 wherein the microelectronics module further comprises a switch.

5. The handset of claim 3 wherein the microelectronics module is configured to adjust an operating mode of the passive element to produce a radiation pattern.

6. The handset of claim 2, wherein the ground structure comprises ground strips configured to mirror the shape and length of the passive element

7. The handset of claim 2, wherein the ground structure comprises bent ground strips configured with the same length as the passive element.

8. The handset of claim 2 wherein the ground structure comprises ground strips configured as meander lines with an electrical length equivalent to an electrical length of the passive element.

9. A wireless mobile handset comprising an antenna array, the antenna array comprising:

a passive element disposed on a first portion of a dielectric substrate,

an active element disposed on a second portion of the dielectric substrate;

wherein the passive element is configured to operate in a directive mode to produce a omni-directional radiation pattern.

10. The handset of claim 9, wherein the antenna array further comprises a ground structure.

11. The handset of claim 10 wherein the antenna array further comprises a microelectronics module disposed between the passive element and the ground structure.

12. The handset of claim 11 wherein the microelectronics module further comprises a switch.

13. The handset of claim 11 wherein the microelectronics module is configured to adjust an operating mode of the passive element to produce a radiation pattern.

14. The handset of claim 10, wherein the ground structure comprises ground strips configured to mirror the shape and length of the passive element

15. The handset of claim 10, wherein the ground structure comprises bent ground strips configured with the same length as the passive element.

16. The handset of claim 10 wherein the ground structure comprises ground strips configured as meander lines with an electrical length equivalent to an electrical length of the passive element.

17. A wireless mobile handset comprising an antenna array, the antenna array comprising:

at least two passive elements disposed on a first portion of a dielectric substrate,

an active element disposed on a second portion of the dielectric substrate;

wherein one of the at least two passives element is configured to operate in a directive mode,

wherein another of the at least two passive elements is configured to operate in a reflective mode, and

wherein the configuration of the at least two passive elements produces an azimuthal radiation pattern.
