Abstract

The present invention is a system for facilitating the selection and downloading of a digital multimedia program based on broadcast information. A single keystroke may trigger a series of events that result in an authorized copy of the desired digital media being saved on a user device. The desired program is wirelessly downloaded in an encrypted format, and after an accounting and billing process transpires, a decryption key is delivered in to the user device in a wireless message. The copy of the desired digital media is then decrypted, and is properly licensed, so that the user may enjoy listening to this media with minimal restrictions.

Claims

1. A method for the wireless distribution of digital programs, comprising:

broadcasting wireless content;

receiving a request, via wireless communication, for at least one program selected from the wireless content, the request including identification information related to a requestor and the at least one program;

verifying the identification information of the requester, the verification including billing the requestor for the at least one program;

creating a decryption key based on the identification information; and

transmitting the decryption key to the requestor via wireless communication.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the wireless content is composed of a series of programs.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the broadcasting wireless content is analog radio content including program associated data (PAD), the program associated data (PAD) including at least one of Radio Data Service (RDS) information and Visual Radio information.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the broadcasting wireless content includes digital broadcasts using at least one of a Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB) or Digital Video Broadcasting for Handheld Devices (DVB-H) standard.

The method of claim 4, wherein the digital broadcasts include program associated data (PAD), the program associated data (PAD) including at least one of program name information, program creator information, electronic program guide (EPG) information, electronic service guide (ESG) information, service information (SI) and program specific information (PSI).

6. The method of claim 1, wherein the request for the at least one program is received in a message sent via a wireless communication medium.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein the verifying the identification information of the requestor includes verifying whether the requestor has previously requested a program, and whether the requestor is currently able to purchase the requested program.

8. The method of claim 1, where the decryption key is used to decrypt the requested at least one program that is separately downloaded by a user.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein the decryption key, when activated, verifies that it is permitted to be activated based on the identification information.

10. A method for requesting a download of a program based on a wireless broadcast, comprising:

receiving, in a device, a wireless broadcast;

pressing a button, on the device, when at least one program selected from the wireless broadcast is desired to be downloaded;

triggering, as a result of the button press, the sending of a request for the at least one program from the device via wireless communication, the request including at least identification information related to a requestor and the at least one program;

downloading, as a result of the button press, an encrypted version of the at least one program to the device via wireless communication; and

receiving in the device, in response to the sending of the request, a decryption key via wireless communication, the decryption key being employed to decrypt the encrypted version of the at least one program.

11. The method of claim 10, wherein the wireless broadcast is composed of a series of programs.

12. The method of claim 10, wherein the wireless broadcast also includes program associated data (PAD).

13. The method of claim 12, wherein the wireless broadcast is analog radio broadcast, and the program associated data (PAD) includes at least Radio Data Service (RDS) information and Visual Radio information.

14. The method of claim 12, wherein the wireless broadcast is a digital broadcast employing a Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB) or Digital Video Broadcasting for Handheld Devices (DVB-H) standard, and the program associated data (PAD) includes at least one of program name information, content creator information, electronic program guide (EPG) information, electronic service guide (ESG) information, service information (SI) and program specific information (PSI).

15. The method of claim 12, wherein the button press further triggers the device to store program associated data (PAD) related to the at least one program.

16. The method of claim 15, further comprising monitoring the wireless broadcast for the at least one program using the stored program associated data (PAD).

17. The method of claim 10, wherein the request for the at least one program is a message sent via a wireless communication medium.

18. The method of claim 10, wherein the at least one program is encrypted prior to downloading.

19. The method of claim 10, wherein the device is wireless communication device including at least a cellular telephone, a palm-top computer and a Personal Digital Assistant (PDA).

20. The method of claim 18, wherein the wireless communication device includes at least an analog or digital radio tuner and a multimedia player.

21. A device for the wireless distribution of digital programs, comprising:

a transmitter for broadcasting wireless content;

a receiver for receiving a request, via wireless communication, for at least one program selected from the wireless content, the request including identification information related to a requestor and the at least one program;

a computing device for verifying the identification information of the requester and for further creating a decryption key based on the identification information, the verification including billing the requester for the at least one program; and

a transmitter for transmitting the decryption key to the requestor via wireless communication.

22. The device of claim 21, wherein the wireless content is composed of a series of programs.

23. The device of claim 21, wherein the broadcasting wireless content is analog radio content including program associated data (PAD), the program associated data (PAD) including at least one of Radio Data Service (RDS) information and Visual Radio information.

24. The device of claim 21, wherein the broadcasting wireless content includes digital broadcasts using at least one of a Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB) or Digital Video Broadcasting for Handheld Devices (DVB-H) standard.

25. The device of claim 24, wherein the digital broadcasts include program associated data (PAD), the program associated data (PAD) including at least one of program name information, program creator information, electronic program guide (EPG) information, electronic service guide (ESG) information, service information (SI) and program specific information (PSI).

26. The device of claim 21, wherein the request for the at least one program is received in a message sent via a wireless communication medium.

27. The device of claim 21, wherein the verifying the identification information of the requestor includes verifying whether the requester has previously requested a program, and whether the requestor is currently able to purchase the requested program.

28. The device of claim 21, where the decryption key is used to decrypt the requested at least one program that is separately downloaded by a user.

29. The device of claim 21, wherein the decryption key, when activated, verifies that it is permitted to be activated based on the identification information.

30. A device, comprising:

a receiver for receiving a wireless broadcast;

a button for indicating to a computing device when at least one program from the wireless broadcast is desired to be downloaded;

the computing device triggering, in response to the button press, a transmitter for sending a request for the at least one program via wireless communication, the request including at least identification information related to a requestor and the at least one program;

a receiver for downloading, as a result of the button press, an encrypted version of the at least one program to the device via wireless communication; and

a receiver for receiving, in response to the sending of the request, a decryption key via wireless communication, the decryption key being employed to decrypt the encrypted version of the at least one program.

31. The device of claim 30, wherein the wireless broadcast is composed of a series of programs.

32. The device of claim 30, wherein the wireless broadcast also includes program associated data (PAD).

33. The device of claim 32, wherein the wireless broadcast is analog radio broadcast, and the program associated data (PAD) includes at least Radio Data Service (RDS) information and Visual Radio information.

34. The device of claim 32, wherein the wireless broadcast is a digital broadcast employing a Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB) or Digital Video Broadcasting for Handheld Devices (DVB-H) standard, and the program associated data (PAD) includes at least one of program name information, content creator information, electronic program guide (EPG) information, electronic service guide (ESG) information, service information (SI) and program specific information (PSI).

35. The device of claim 30, wherein the button press further triggers the device to store program associated data (PAD) related to the at least one program.

36. The device of claim 35, further comprising the computing device monitoring the wireless broadcast for the at least one program using the stored program associated data (PAD).

37. The device of claim 30, wherein the request for the at least one program is a message sent via a wireless communication medium.

38. The device of claim 30, wherein the at least one program is encrypted prior to downloading.

39. The device of claim 30, wherein the device is wireless communication device including at least a cellular telephone, a palm-top computer and a Personal Digital Assistant (PDA).

40. The device of claim 39, further including at least an analog or digital radio tuner and a multimedia player.

41. A computer program product comprising a computer usable medium having computer readable program code embodied in said medium for the wireless distribution of digital programs, comprising:

a computer readable program code for broadcasting wireless content;

a computer readable program code for receiving, via wireless communication, a request for at least one program selected from the wireless content, the request including identification information related to a requestor and the at least one program;

a computer readable program code for verifying the identification information of the requester, the verification including billing the requestor for the at least one program;

a computer readable program code for creating a decryption key based on the identification information; and

a computer readable program code for transmitting the decryption key to the requestor via wireless communication.

42. The computer program of claim 41, wherein the wireless broadcast content is composed of a series of programs.

43. The computer program product of claim 41, wherein the broadcasting wireless content is analog radio content including program associated data (PAD), the program associated data (PAD) including at least one of Radio Data Service (RDS) information and Visual Radio information.

44. The computer program product of claim 41, wherein the broadcasting wireless content includes digital broadcasts using at least one of a Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB) or Digital Video Broadcasting for Handheld Devices (DVB-H) standard.

45. The computer program product of claim 44, wherein the digital broadcasts include program associated data (PAD), the program associated data (PAD) including at least one of program name information, program creator information, electronic program guide (EPG) information, electronic service guide (ESG) information, service information (SI) and program specific information (PSI).

46. The computer program product of claim 41, wherein the request for the at least one program is received in a message sent via a wireless communication medium.

47. The computer program product of claim 41, wherein the verifying the identification information of the requestor includes verifying whether the requestor has previously requested a program, and whether the requestor is currently able to purchase the requested program.

48. The computer program product of claim 41, where the decryption key is used to decrypt the requested at least one program that is separately downloaded by a user.

49. The computer program product of claim 41, wherein the decryption key, when activated, verifies that it is permitted to be activated based on the identification information.

50. A computer program product comprising a computer usable medium having computer readable program code embodied in said medium for requesting a download of a program based on a wireless broadcast, comprising:

a computer readable program code for receiving, in a device, a wireless broadcast;

a computer readable program code for pressing a button, on the device, when at least one program selected from the wireless broadcast is desired to be downloaded;

a computer readable program code for triggering, as a result of the button press, the sending of a request for the at least one program from the device via wireless communication, the request including at least identification information related to a requester and the at least one program;

a computer readable program code for downloading, as a result of the button press, an encrypted version of the at least one program to the device via wireless communication; and

a computer readable program code for receiving in the device, in response to the sending of the request, a decryption key via wireless communication, the decryption key being employed to decrypt the encrypted version of the at least one program.

51. The computer program product of claim 50, wherein the wireless broadcast is composed of a series of programs.

52. The computer program product of claim 50, wherein the wireless broadcast also includes program associated data (PAD).

53. The computer program product of claim 52, wherein the wireless broadcast is analog radio broadcast, and the program associated data (PAD) includes at least one of Radio Data Service (RDS) information and Visual Radio information.

54. The computer program product of claim 52, wherein the wireless broadcast is a digital broadcast employing a Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB) or Digital Video Broadcasting for Handheld Devices (DVB-H) standard, and the program associated data (PAD) includes at least one of program name information, content creator information, electronic program guide (EPG) information, electronic service guide (ESG) information, service information (SI) and program specific information (PSI).

55. The computer program product of claim 52, wherein the button press further triggers the device to store program associated data (PAD) related to the at least one program.

56. The computer program product of claim 55, further comprising monitoring the wireless broadcast for the at least one program using the stored program associated data (PAD).

57. The computer program product of claim 50, wherein the request for the at least one program is a message sent via a wireless communication medium.

58. The computer program product of claim 50, wherein the at least one program is encrypted prior to downloading.

59. The computer program product of claim 50, wherein the device is wireless communication device including at least a cellular telephone, a palm-top computer and a Personal Digital Assistant (PDA).

60. The computer program product of claim 59, wherein the wireless communication device includes at least an analog or digital radio tuner and a multimedia player.

61. A system for the wireless distribution of digital media, comprising:

a broadcast transmitter;

a device;

a digital rights provider;

the broadcast transmitter broadcasting wireless content;

the device, after receiving the broadcast wireless content, sending a request for at least one program selected from the broadcast wireless content to the digital rights provider, the device further downloading an encrypted version of the at least one program;

the digital rights provider, receiving a request for the at least one program via wireless communication from the device, the request including identification information related to a requestor and the at least one program;

the digital rights provider further verifying the identification information of the requestor, the verification including billing the requestor for the at least one program, and after the verification, creating a decryption key based on the identification information, wherein the decryption key is transmitted to the device via wireless communication;

the device receiving, in response to the sending of the request, the decryption key via wireless communication, the decryption key being employed to decrypt the encrypted version of the at least one program.

62. The system of claim 61, wherein the wireless broadcast also includes program associated data (PAD), the device storing the program associated data (PAD) related to the at least one program, the stored program associated data (PAD) being employed to identify the encrypted version of the at least one program for downloading to the device.
