Systems and methods for indicating an amount of use of a sensor
First Claim
1. A method of determining when electronics of a noninvasive optical medical sensor have been used beyond an intended amount, the method comprising:
- monitoring when a noninvasive optical medical sensor used;
updating a cumulative measure of use based on said monitoring; and
activating an indicator alerting a caregiver when said cumulative measure meets or exceeds an intended threshold amount of cumulative use.

Abstract
Aspects of the present disclosure include systems and methods for indicating an amount of use of a pulse oximetry sensor. According to one embodiment, the system includes an oximeter that monitors the amount of use for a given sensor. The oximeter and/or the sensor may advantageously include a visual alarm, an audio alarm, a vibrational alarm, a power down function, or the like, which can be activated when a predetermined amount of use has expired. According to another embodiment, the system includes a sensor having a memory device storing a unique identifier.

7. A system for preventing overuse of an optical sensor capable of communicating signals indicative of one or more physiological parameters of a patient, to a patient monitor, the system comprising:
-
electronic elements of a noninvasive optical sensor;
one or more use monitoring parameters indicative of an amount of use of at least one of the electronic elements;
a processing device capable of estimating an amount of use of the at least one of the electronic elements based on at least one of the one or more monitoring parameters; and
an alarm responsive to the processing device to indicate overuse of the at least one of the electronic elements. - View Dependent Claims (8, 9, 10, 11)

12. A method of monitoring medical device use, the method comprising:
-
accessing one or more cumulative use parameters;
accessing a sensor life formula weighting the one or more cumulative use parameters;
calculating a cumulative use estimate indicative of the use of a medical device;
determining whether said use estimate is above a use threshold; and
when said use estimate is above said threshold, indicating to a caregiver that at least a portion of said medical device has expired. - View Dependent Claims (13, 14, 15, 16, 17)

- 18. A memory associated with a noninvasive optical sensor capable of outputting to a patient monitor an intensity signal indicative of blood parameters, said memory storing cumulative use data associated with said optical sensor, said memory accessed to determine whether use of said optical sensor should be discontinued.
