Abstract

An interactive health monitoring system. A multimedia processor is a electronic apparatus comprising a microprocessor, hardware, software, and a modem. One or more physiological data monitors are coupled to provide a signal representative of a user'"'"'s physiological parameter to the multimedia processor through an isolated interface circuit. A hand-held program controller with directional buttons is operated by the user to control the various functions of the multimedia processor. A television is coupled to the multimedia processor to provide sound and a video display based upon output signals from the multimedia processor. Software necessary for the system and medical information are downloaded from a remote server based upon the user'"'"'s operation of the hand-held program controller and also based upon predetermined software routines and data stored within the system.

Claims

1. A system of providing information to an individual comprising:

a processor unit configured to present material to the individual and receive responses from the individual;

a server configured to communicate with the processor unit through at least one communication network and access a computer readable medium storing one or more media programs wherein (i) the server is remotely situated from the processor unit, (ii) the server is configured to communicate one of the one or more media programs to the processor unit based upon an identification code received from the processor unit, (iii) the processor unit is configured to communicate the responses received from the individual to the server and (iv) the identification code is used to direct the media program to a particular individual or a group of individuals; and

a data monitoring device configured to communicate with the processor unit.

2. The system according to claim 1, wherein the one or more media programs comprise educational content.

3. The system according to claim 1, wherein the data monitoring device is coupled to the processor unit by an infra-red connection.

4. The system according to claim 1, further comprising a television coupled to said processor unit.

5. The system according to claim 1, further comprising a hand held controller coupled to said processor unit.

6. The system according to claim 1, wherein said processor unit is configured to communicate with a smart card.

7. The system according to claim 1, further comprising a healthcare professional computer remotely situated from the server and the processor unit, wherein the healthcare professional computer is configured to communicate with the server.

8. A system of monitoring a condition of an individual comprising:

a processor unit configured to present material to the individual;

a server configured to communicate with the processor unit through at least one communication network, wherein (i) the server is remotely situated from the processor unit and (ii) the server is configured to communicate information to the processor unit; and

a data monitoring device configured to communicate with the server through the at least one communication network, wherein the information communicated by the server to the processor unit is based on data communicated by the data monitoring device to the server.

9. The system according to claim 8, wherein the at least one communication network comprises a computer network.

10. The system according to claim 8, wherein the at least one communication network comprises a telephone network.

11. The system according to claim 8, wherein the at least one communication network comprises a cable network.

12. The system according to claim 8, further comprising a television coupled to said processor unit.

13. The system according to claim 8, wherein the at least one communication network comprises a wireless network.

14. The system according to claim 8, wherein the data monitoring device is configured to measure a physiological parameter of the individual.

15. The system according to claim 8, wherein the at least one communication network comprises a satellite network.

16. The system of claim 15, further comprising:

a transmitter coupling the server to the satellite network; and

a receiver coupling the processor unit to the satellite network.

17. A system of monitoring a condition of an individual comprising:

a processor unit configured to present material to the individual and receive responses from the individual;

a server configured to communicate with the processor unit through at least one communication network and access a computer readable medium storing one or more media programs wherein (i) the server is remotely situated from the processor unit, (ii) the server is configured to communicate one of the one or more media programs to the processor unit based upon an identification code received from the processor unit, (iii) the processor unit is configured to communicate the responses received from the individual to the server and (iv) the identification code is used to direct the media program to a particular individual or a group of individuals; and

a data monitoring device configured to communicate with said server via the at least one communication network.

18. The system according to claim 17, wherein the one or more media programs comprise educational material concerning one or more health related topics selected from the group consisting of preventative measures, exercise, diet, lifestyle, health conditions, diseases, health consequences, health monitoring and self-care.

19. The system according to claim 17, wherein the server is further configured to communicate the one of the one or more media programs to the processor unit based upon health status of the individual received from the processor unit.

20. The system according to claim 17, wherein the one of the one or more media programs communicated by the server to the processor unit are based on data communicated by the data monitoring device to the server.
