Abstract

A system and method for configuration using abstract configuration information is described. In an embodiment, an abstract configuration module acts like an informational proxy between components of a system. The configuration module provides a level of abstraction that allows for some properties to be abstracted instead of being hard coded into each node of the system.

Claims

1. A method comprising:

requesting a property from a system information module, wherein a first component requests the property and the system information module is an informational proxy; and

receiving the property from the system information module, wherein the first component receives the property.

2. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

exposing the property to the system information module, wherein a second component exposes the property.

3. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

generating the system information module with initial properties exposed in the system.

4. The method of claim 3, wherein the initial properties of the system include:

maximum heap size;

number of nodes; and

number of threads.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the system information module includes a property sheet of name-value pairs.

6. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

evaluating computed settings using the received property, wherein the first component performs the evaluation.

7. An article of manufacture including program code which, when executed by a machine, causes the machine to perform a method, the method comprising:

requesting a property from a system information module, wherein a first component requests the property and the system information module is an informational proxy; and

receiving the property from the system information module, wherein the first component receives the property.

8. The method of claim 7, further comprising:

exposing the property to the system information module, wherein a second component exposes the property.

9. The method of claim 8, further comprising:

generating the system information module with initial properties exposed in the system.

10. The method of claim 9, wherein the initial properties of the system include:

maximum heap size;

number of nodes; and

number of threads.

11. The method of claim 7, wherein the system information module includes a property sheet of name-value pairs.

12. The method of claim 7, further comprising:

evaluating computed settings using the received property, wherein the first component performs the evaluation.

13. A system comprising:

a system information module to store system properties; and

at least one configuration component to communicate with the system information module.

14. The system of claim 13, wherein the system information module includes paths to specific components.

15. The system of claim 14, wherein the system properties are parameterized.

16. The system of claim 13, wherein the system information module is a property sheet of name-value pairs.
