Abstract

A method and apparatus for configuration templates for different use cases for a system. An embodiment of a method includes receiving an abstract configuration for a system. The received abstract configuration includes a configuration setting. The configuration setting is modified with a template, with the template being designed for a particular use of the system.

Claims

1. A method comprising:

receiving an abstract configuration for a system, the abstract configuration including a setting; and

modifying the configuration setting with a template, the template being designed for a particular use of the system.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the template provides a setting for disabling or enabling a component.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the received abstract configuration is not dependent on any characteristic of the system.

4. The method of claim 3, wherein the modified configuration setting is not dependent on any characteristic of the system.

5. The method of claim 4, further comprising using the abstract configuration for a plurality of different systems.

6. The method of claim 1, further comprising providing the modified abstract configuration for customization for a particular configuration instance.

7. A server comprising:

a database to contain a set of abstract configuration elements, the set of abstract configuration elements including a template for a use case; and

a configuration manager, the configuration manager to apply the template to a system configuration to produce a modified configuration.

8. The server of claim 7, wherein the modified configuration is designed for the use case.

9. The server of claim 8, wherein the modified configuration is not dependent on any characteristics of the system.

10. The server of claim 9, wherein the modified configuration is useable in a plurality of computer systems.

11. A machine-readable medium having stored thereon data representing sequences of instructions that, when executed by a machine, cause the machine to perform operations comprising:

receiving an abstract configuration for a system, the configuration including a setting; and

modifying the configuration setting with a template, the template being designated for a particular use of the system; and

generating a modified abstract configuration for the designated use.

12. The medium of claim 11, wherein the template is intended to disable or enable a component.

13. The medium of claim 11, wherein the received abstract configuration is not dependent on any characteristic of the system.

14. The medium of claim 13, wherein the modified abstract configuration is not dependent on any characteristic of the system.

15. The method of claim 14, wherein the generated configuration may be used by a plurality of different systems.
