Abstract

A patient bed includes a patient support, a base, and an electrical control system. The patient support is mounted relative to said base, which has a plurality of bearing members for moving the base and the patient support across a surface. Each of the bearing members includes a brake operatively associated therewith, with the electrical control system having a user actuatable device and being configured to actuate one or more of the brakes upon actuation of the user actuatable device.

Claims

1. A patient bed comprising:

a patient support;

a base, said patient support mounted relative to said base, said base having a plurality of bearing members for moving said base and said patient support across a surface, each of said bearing members including a brake operatively associated therewith; and

an electrical control system, said electrical control system having a user actuatable device and being configured to actuate one or more of said brakes upon actuation of said user actuatable device.

2. The patient bed according to claim 1, wherein said user actuatable device comprises a button or a touch screen.

3. The patient bed according to claim 1, wherein said patient support comprises a support frame system, and said user actuatable device located at said support frame system.

4. The patient bed according to claim 1, wherein said bearing members comprise castors.

5. The patient bed according to claim 1, wherein said electrical control system includes an actuator for actuating at least one of said brakes.

The patient bed according to claim 5, wherein said bearing members comprise forward bearing members and rearward bearing members, said electrical control system including a first actuator for actuating said brakes of said forward bearing members and a second actuator for actuating said brakes of said rearward bearing members.

7. The patient bed according to claim 1, wherein said electrical control system includes an actuator for each brake.

8. The patient bed according to claim 5, further comprising a manual override mechanism for decoupling said actuator from said at least one brake.

9. The patient bed according to claim 8, wherein said manual override mechanism includes a manual override pedal or handle.

10. The patient bed according to claim 1, wherein said control system includes a plurality of actuators, said actuators operatively associated with said brakes for selectively actuating said brakes.

11. A patient bed comprising:

a patient support;

a base, said patient support mounted relative to said base, said base having a plurality of bearing members for moving said base and said patient support across a surface, each of said bearing members including a brake operatively associated therewith;

at least one actuator;

a lateral shaft, said actuator selectively coupled to said lateral shaft and selectively rotating said lateral shaft, said lateral shaft operatively coupled with said brakes wherein when said actuator rotates said lateral shaft rotation of said lateral shaft adjusts said brakes; and

an electrical control system, said electrical control system selectively powering said actuator to adjust said brakes.

12. The patient bed according to claim 11, further comprising a levering mechanism, said actuator selectively coupled to said lateral shaft by said levering mechanism.

13. The patient bed according to claim 12, wherein said levering mechanism is mounted to said lateral shaft by a collar.

14. The patient bed according to claim 13, wherein said collar is releasably coupled to said lateral shaft.

15. The patient bed according to claim 13, further comprising a brake shaft associated with each of said brakes, said lateral shaft operatively coupled to said brake shafts, said brakes shafts positioning said brakes in a braking, a steering, or a neutral position when said lateral shafted is rotated.

16. The patient bed according to claim 14, further comprising a manual brake device.

17. The patient bed according to claim 16, wherein said manual brake device comprises a pedal or handle, said handle or pedal operatively coupled to said lateral shaft and being adapted to decouple said lateral shaft from said collar and thereby decouple said actuator from said lateral shaft.

18. The patient bed according to claim 16, wherein said manual brake device provides a manual override function.

19. The patient bed according to claim 16, further comprising a visual brake status indicator, said indicator indicating a brake status as one chosen from braking, steering, or neutral.

20. The patient bed according to claim 11, further comprising a detection system, said detection system in communication with said control system and being adapted to sense the status of said brakes, and said control system including a display and displaying the status of said brakes detected by said detection system at said display.

21. The patient bed according to claim 11, further comprising:

a handle mounted to said bed; and

said control system powering said actuator based on an actuating input at said handle.

22. The patient bed according to claim 11 further comprising:

a head board mounted to said patient support; and

said control system powering said actuator based on an actuating input at said headboard.

23. A patient bed comprising:

a patient support;

a base, said patient support mounted relative to said base, said base having a plurality of bearing members for moving said base and said patient support across a surface, each of said bearing members including a brake operatively associated therewith;

at least one actuator;

a lateral shaft, said actuator selectively releasably coupled to said lateral shaft and selectively rotating said lateral shaft, said lateral shaft operatively coupled to said bearing members wherein when said actuator rotates said lateral shaft rotation of said lateral shaft induces activation of said brakes;

a manual override mechanism;

said manual override mechanism configured to selectively decouple said actuator from said lateral shaft; and

an electrical control system, said electrical control system selectively powering said actuator to actuate said brakes when said actuator is coupled to said lateral shaft.

24. The patient bed according to claim 23, wherein said manual override mechanism includes a manual override pedal or handle.

25. The patient bed according to claim 24, further comprising a visual brake status indicator, said indicator indicating a status of said brakes as one chosen from braking, steering, or neutral.

26. The patient bed according to claim 25, wherein said visual brake status is located at said manual override mechanism.

27. The patient bed according to claim 23, further comprising a brake shaft associated with each of said brakes, said lateral shaft operatively coupled to said brake shafts, said brake shafts positioning said brakes in a braking, a steering, or a neutral position when said lateral shafted is rotated.
