Using RFID to prevent or detect falls, wandering, bed egress and medication errors
First Claim
1. A system for monitoring and responding to predefined movements of a monitored person within premises occupied by the person, comprising:
- one or more RFID tags carried by the person including at least one upper-body RFID tag and at least one lower-body RFID tag;
one or more RFID antennas located in the premises including at least one RFID floor antenna associated with flooring in the premise, at least one RFID bed antenna associated with a bed assigned to the person for sleeping within the premises, and at least one RFID door antenna associated with a door providing egress to the premises;
one or more RFID transceivers configured to generate interrogation signals for transmission from the RFID antennas to the RFID tags and receive reply signals generated by the RFID tags in response to the interrogation signals;
one or more controllers configured to analyze the reply signals received from the RFID tags and determine whether the person has engaged in predefined movements based on the reply signals, wherein the predefined movements include a fall from which the person has not recovered, bed egress, wandering, attempted or actual room egress, and medication access; and
one or more response systems configured to implement one or more response actions in response to a determination that the person has engaged in one or more of the predefined movements, wherein the response actions include delivery of an alert message to a patient monitoring system, activation of a camera associated with the premises, activation of an announcement that is audible within the premises, and detection of an RFID tag worn by an attending party entering into close proximity to the monitored person indicating that the attending party has responded to an alert activated in response to the detected movement.

Abstract
Systems, methods, and devices for using body-worn RFID tags related instrumentation located in the premises where a monitored person is located to prevent or detect specific types of movements of the person, such as falls from which the person has not recovered, wandering, bed egress, attempted room egress, and medication errors. The body-worn RFID tags may include an upper body RFID tag located in a wrist band and a lower body RFID tag located in a sock worn by the monitored person. The RFID instrumentation located in the premises may include one or more antennas located in the floor, door, bed frame, and mattress. The systems may also activate response actions upon detecting specified movements, such as sending an alert message to a patient monitoring system, activating an alarm, activating an camera, and/or playing a recorded message to the person.

17. A system for monitoring and responding to a fall from which a monitored person has not recovered within premises occupied by the person, comprising:
-
one or more body-worn RFID tags carried by an upper-body portion of the person;
one or more RFID floor antennas associated with flooring in the premise;
one or more RFID transceivers configured to generate interrogation signals for transmission from the RFID floor antennas to the body-worn RFID tags and receive reply signals generated by the body-worn RFID tags in response to the interrogation signals;
one or more controllers configured to analyze the reply signals received from the body-worn RFID tags and determine that the person has engaged in a fall from which the person has not recovered by determining that one or more of the body-worn RFID tags have come into close proximity to one or more of the RFID floor antennas for a predetermined period of time; and
one or more response systems configured to activate one or more response actions in response to the determination that the monitored person has engaged in the fall from which the person has not recovered including transmission of a fall alert message to a patient monitoring system. - View Dependent Claims (18, 19)

20. A system for monitoring and responding to bed egress detected for a monitored person within premises occupied by the person, comprising:
-
one or more body-worn RFID tags carried by a lower-body portion of the person;
one or more RFID bed antennas associated a bed assigned to the person for sleeping within in the premise;
one or more RFID transceivers configured to generate interrogation signals for transmission from the RFID floor antennas to the body-worn RFID tags and receive reply signals generated by the body-worn RFID tags in response to the interrogation signals;
one or more controllers configured to analyze the reply signals received from the body-worn RFID tags and determine that the person has engaged in bed egress by determining that one or more of the body-worn RFID tags have moved past one or more of the RFID bed antennas for a predetermined period of time; and
one or more response systems configured to activate one or more response actions in response to a determination that the monitored person has engaged in bed egress including transmission of a bed egress alert message to a patient monitoring system. - View Dependent Claims (21)
