Abstract

An analyte monitor includes a sensor, a sensor control unit, and a display unit. The sensor has, for example, a substrate, a recessed channel formed in the substrate, and conductive material disposed in the recessed channel to form a working electrode. The sensor control unit typically has a housing adapted for placement on skin and is adapted to receive a portion of an electrochemical sensor. The sensor control unit also includes two or more conductive contacts disposed on the housing and configured for coupling to two or more contact pads on the sensor. A transmitter is disposed in the housing and coupled to the plurality of conductive contacts for transmitting data obtained using the sensor. The display unit has a receiver for receiving data transmitted by the transmitter of the sensor control unit and a display coupled to the receiver for displaying an indication of a level of an analyte. The analyte monitor may also be part of a drug delivery system to alter the level of the analyte based on the data obtained using the sensor.

Claims

1. An integrated therapy management device, comprising:

a housing comprising;

a data processing unit;

a data communication unit in communication with the data processing unit to communicate one or more signals related to an analyte level of a person of interest; and

a medication delivery unit to deliver a dose of a desired medicant; and

a display configured to display data.

2. The device of claim 1, wherein the data communication unit includes one of a transmitter, a receiver, or a transceiver.

3. The device of claim 1 wherein the medication delivery unit is an insulin delivery unit.

4. The device of claim 3 wherein the insulin delivery unit includes an insulin inhalation unit.

5. The device of claim 3 wherein the insulin delivery unit includes an external infusion pump.

6. The device of claim 3 wherein the insulin delivery unit includes a syringe injector.

7. The device of claim 3 wherein the insulin delivery unit is a syringe.

8. The device of claim 1 wherein at least a portion of the display is on the housing.

9. The device of claim 1 wherein the display is configured to display therapy related data.

10. The device of claim 9 wherein the therapy related data includes one or more monitored analyte level or a drug administration protocol.

11. The device of claim 1 wherein the data processing unit is configured to provide a drug administration protocol.

12. A therapy management system, the system comprising:

a transmitter configured to transmit one or more signals related to a monitored analyte level; and

a housing, comprising;

a receiver to receive data from the transmitter; and

an inhalable drug administration unit.

13. The system of claim 12 wherein the drug administration unit includes inhalable insulin.

14. The system of claim 12 wherein the housing further includes a processor configured to determine a drug administration protocol.

15. The system of claim 12 wherein the housing further includes a display to display one or more output signals related to the monitored analyte level or the drug administration protocol.

16. The system of claim 12 wherein the receiver is in wireless communication with the transmitter.

17. The system of claim 12 wherein the receiver is configured to receive data from the transmitter using RF communication.

18. A glucose management system comprising:

a continuous glucose sensor;

a transmitter unit configured to transmit one or more signals associated with glucose level detected by the glucose sensor;

a data receiver unit configured to receive the transmitted one or more signals associated with the glucose level detected by the glucose sensor; and

an insulin inhalation device, configured to dispense inhalable insulin based on a drug administration protocol determined, at least in part, by the detected glucose level.

19. The system of claim 18 wherein the data receiver unit further includes a display to display therapy related data.

20. The system of claim 19 wherein the therapy related data includes one or more signals associated with the detected glucose level, or amount of inhalable insulin for dispensing.
