Abstract

The disclosed embodiments include a method, system, and device for conducting ultrasound interrogation of a medium. The novel method includes transmitting a non-beamformed or beamformed ultrasound wave into the medium, receiving more than one echoed ultrasound wave from the medium, and converting the received echoed ultrasound wave into digital data. The novel method may further transmit the digital data. In some embodiments, the transmitting may be wireless. The novel device may include transducer elements, an analog-to-digital converter in communication with the transducer elements, and a transmitter in communication with the analog-to-digital converter. The transducers may operate to convert a first electrical energy into an ultrasound wave. The first electrical energy may or may not be beamformed. The transducers also may convert an echoed ultrasound wave into a second electrical energy. The analog-to-digital converter may convert the electrical energy into digital data, and the transmitter may transmit the digital data.

Claims

1. A system for conducting ultrasound interrogation of a medium, comprising:

a main unit;

a wireless communication link in communication with the main unit; and

a remote unit in communication with the main unit, wherein the remote unit comprises a programmable logic device.

2. The system of claim 1, wherein the programmable logic device receives configuration data from the main unit via the wireless communication link.

3. The system of claim 2, wherein the configuration data programs the remote unit.

4. The system of claim 2, wherein the remote unit is calibrated based on the configuration data.

5. The system of claim 2, wherein the configuration data is stored in at least one of the following:

the main unit, the remote unit, and another unit.

6. The system of claim 5, wherein the stored configuration data is used following powering down of at least one of the following:

the main unit, the remote unit, and another unit.

7. The system of claim 2, wherein the remote unit comprises a field-programmable gate array that is programmed using the configuration data.

8. The system of claim 1, wherein the remote unit receives digital ultrasound data via at least one of the following:

the wireless communication link and a wired communication link.

9. The system of claim 1, wherein the remote unit comprises at least one of the following:

non-volatile storage device, flash memory, battery-powered RAM, complex programmable logic device, and EEPROM.

10. The system of claim 9, wherein the programmable logic device receives configuration data from the main unit via the wireless communication link, and wherein the EEPROM is reprogrammed via the configuration data to permit updated configuration of the programmable logic device.

11. The system of claim 1, wherein communication of the configuration data is initiated by at least one of the following:

the main unit, the remote unit, and another unit.

12. The system of claim 1, wherein the programmable logic device receives configuration data from the main unit via the wireless communication link, and wherein the configuration data comprises at least one of the following:

power status, designation of device, type of device, frequency range, array configuration, power warnings, capability of a remote unit, quality of transmission of digital data, quantity of errors in transmission of digital data, availability of power required for transmission of digital data, change in transmission rate, completion of transmission, quality of data transmission, look-up tables, programming code for field programmable gate arrays and microcontrollers, transmission characteristics of the non-beamformed ultrasound wave, processing characteristics of the echoed ultrasound wave, processing characteristics of the digital data, and transmission characteristics of the digital data.

13. The system of claim 1, further comprising a proximity sensor in communication with the remote unit, wherein the proximity sensor senses a proximity to the remote unit using at least one of the following techniques:

optical, infrared, capacitive, inductive, electrically conductive, and radio frequency.

14. A method for conducting ultrasound interrogation of a medium, comprising:

a wirelessly communicating ultrasound data with a main unit and a remote unit;

wirelessly communicating configuration data to the remote unit from the main unit via a programmable logic device; and

programming the remote unit via the configuration data.

15. The method of claim 14, further comprising calibrating the remote unit based on the configuration data.

16. The method of claim 14, further comprising receiving digital ultrasound data via at least one of the following techniques:

wirelessly and wired.

17. The method of claim 14, further comprising programming the remote unit with the configuration data using a field-programmable gate array.

18. The method of claim 14, wherein the remote unit comprises at least one of the following:

non-volatile storage device, flash memory, battery-powered RAM, complex programmable logic device, and EEPROM.

19. The method of claim 18, wherein the programmable logic device receives configuration data from the main unit wirelessly, and wherein the EEPROM is reprogrammed via the configuration data to permit updated configuration of the programmable logic device.

20. The method of claim 14, further comprising initiating communication of the configuration data by at least one of the following:

the main unit, the remote unit, and another unit.

21. The method of claim 14, further comprising storing the configuration data in at least one of the following:

the main unit, the remote unit, and another unit.

22. The method of claim 21, further comprising using the stored configuration data following powering down of at least one of the following:

the main unit, the remote unit, and another unit.

23. The method of claim 14, further comprising receiving the configuration data from the main unit wirelessly, wherein the configuration data comprises at least one of the following:

power status, designation of device, type of device, frequency range, array configuration, power warnings, capability of a remote unit, quality of transmission of digital data, quantity of errors in transmission of digital data, availability of power required for transmission of digital data, change in transmission rate, completion of transmission, quality of data transmission, look-up tables, programming code for field programmable gate arrays and microcontrollers, transmission characteristics of the non-beamformed ultrasound wave, processing characteristics of the echoed ultrasound wave, processing characteristics of the digital data, and transmission characteristics of the digital data.

24. The method of claim 14, further comprising sensing a proximity to the remote unit using at least one of the following techniques:

optical, infrared, capacitive, inductive, electrically conductive, and radio frequency.
