Abstract

An interior rearview mirror system for a vehicle includes an interior rearview mirror assembly having a reflective element. An information display is at the interior rearview mirror assembly and displays information for viewing by a driver of the vehicle. The information display may be located behind the reflective element and viewable through the reflective element by the driver of the vehicle. The mirror system includes a handheld device having a position locator and being capable of establishing a geographical position of the handheld device. The information displayed by the information display is derived at least in part via a wireless communication link with the handheld device. The information display may include a display of turn-by-turn information for viewing by the driver of the vehicle. The information display may comprise a video screen.

Claims

1. An interior rearview mirror system for a vehicle, said interior rearview mirror system comprising:

an interior rearview mirror assembly, said rearview mirror assembly including a reflective element;

an information display at said interior rearview mirror assembly, said information display displaying information for viewing by a driver of the vehicle, said information display located behind said reflective element and viewable through said reflective element by the driver of the vehicle;

a handheld device, said handheld device having a position locator and being capable of establishing a geographical position of said handheld device;

said information displayed by said information display being derived at least in part via a wireless communication link with said handheld device; and

wherein said information display includes a display of turn-by-turn information for viewing by the driver of the vehicle.

2. The interior rearview mirror system of claim 1, wherein said handheld device comprises one of a phone and a personal digital assistant.

3. The interior rearview mirror system of claim 1, wherein said handheld device comprises a handheld GPS device.

4. The interior rearview mirror system of claim 1, wherein said information displayed by said information display is downloaded from a source external of the vehicle.

5. The interior rearview mirror system of claim 1, wherein said wireless communication link comprises a wireless communication link between said handheld device and said interior rearview mirror assembly.

6. The interior rearview mirror system of claim 5, wherein said wireless communication link comprises a short range wireless radio frequency communication link.

7. The interior rearview mirror system of claim 1, wherein said information display comprises a video screen.

8. The interior rearview mirror system of claim 7, wherein said information display is operable to display video images derived from a video camera of the vehicle.

9. The interior rearview mirror system of claim 8, wherein said video images are derived from a rearward facing video camera of the vehicle.

10. The interior rearview mirror system of claim 9 further comprising at least one of a graphic overlay of said video images and an image highlight of said video images.

11. The interior rearview mirror system of claim 1 further comprising a voice input device for hands free operation of said handheld device.

12. The interior rearview mirror system of claim 1, wherein the driver of the vehicle inputs a destination via a voice input device.

13. The interior rearview mirror system of claim 1, wherein said information display includes directional indicia.

14. The interior rearview mirror system of claim 13, wherein said directional indicia comprise directional arrows.

15. The interior rearview mirror system of claim 1, wherein said reflective element comprises a transflective reflective element.

16. The interior rearview mirror system of claim 1, wherein said reflective element comprises a variable reflectance electro-optic reflective element.

17. The interior rearview mirror system of claim 16, wherein said variable reflectance electro-optic reflective element comprises an electrochromic medium of electrically variable opacity, and wherein said information display located behind said reflective element increases in intensity to compensate for dimming of said electrochromic medium of said reflective element.

18. An interior rearview mirror system for a vehicle, said interior rearview mirror system comprising:

an interior rearview mirror assembly, said rearview mirror assembly including a reflective element;

an information display at said interior rearview mirror assembly, said information display comprising a video display screen for displaying information for viewing by a driver of the vehicle;

a handheld device, said handheld device having a position locator and being capable of establishing a geographical position of said handheld device;

said information displayed by said information display being derived at least in part via a wireless communication link with said handheld device; and

wherein said information display includes a display of at least one of turn-by-turn information for viewing by the driver of the vehicle and video images derived from a video camera of the vehicle.

19. The interior rearview mirror system of claim 18, wherein said information display displays said turn-by-turn information and said video images.

20. The interior rearview mirror system of claim 18 further comprising at least one of a graphic overlay of said video images and an image highlight of said video images.

21. The interior rearview mirror system of claim 18, wherein said video images are derived from a rearward facing video camera of the vehicle.

22. The interior rearview mirror system of claim 18, wherein said handheld device comprises one of a phone, a personal digital assistant, and a GPS device.

23. The interior rearview mirror system of claim 18, wherein said information displayed by said information display is downloaded from a source external of the vehicle.

24. The interior rearview mirror system of claim 18, wherein said wireless communication link comprises a wireless communication link between said handheld device and said interior rearview mirror assembly.

25. The interior rearview mirror system of claim 24, wherein said wireless communication link comprises a short range wireless radio frequency communication link.

26. The interior rearview mirror system of claim 18 further comprising a voice input device for hands free operation of said handheld device.

27. The interior rearview mirror system of claim 18, wherein the driver of the vehicle inputs a destination via a voice input device.

28. The interior rearview mirror system of claim 18, wherein said information display includes directional indicia.

29. The interior rearview mirror system of claim 18, wherein said reflective element comprises a transflective reflective element.

30. The interior rearview mirror system of claim 18, wherein said information display is located behind said reflective element and viewable through said reflective element by the driver of the vehicle.

31. The interior rearview mirror system of claim 30, wherein said variable reflectance electro-optic reflective element comprises an electrochromic medium of electrically variable opacity, and wherein said information display located behind said reflective element increases in intensity to compensate for dimming of said electrochromic medium of said reflective element.

32. An interior rearview mirror system for a vehicle, said interior rearview mirror system comprising:

an interior rearview mirror assembly, said rearview mirror assembly including a reflective element;

an information display at said interior rearview mirror assembly, said information display displaying information for viewing by a driver of the vehicle;

a handheld device, said handheld device having a position locator and being capable of establishing a geographical position of said handheld device;

said information displayed by said information display being derived at least in part via a wireless communication link with said handheld device;

wherein said information display includes a display of navigational information for viewing by the driver of the vehicle; and

a voice input device for hands free operation of said handheld device.

33. The interior rearview mirror system of claim 32, wherein said information display is located behind said reflective element and viewable through said reflective element by the driver of the vehicle.

34. The interior rearview mirror system of claim 33, wherein said variable reflectance electro-optic reflective element comprises an electrochromic medium of electrically variable opacity, and wherein said information display located behind said reflective element increases in intensity to compensate for dimming of said electrochromic medium of said reflective element.

35. The interior rearview mirror system of claim 32, wherein said handheld device comprises one of a phone, a personal digital assistant and a GPS device.

36. The interior rearview mirror system of claim 32, wherein said information displayed by said information display is downloaded from a source external of the vehicle.

37. The interior rearview mirror system of claim 32, wherein said wireless communication link comprises a wireless communication link between said handheld device and said interior rearview mirror assembly.

38. The interior rearview mirror system of claim 32, wherein said information display comprises a video screen.

39. The interior rearview mirror system of claim 38, wherein said information display is operable to display video images derived from a video camera of the vehicle.

40. The interior rearview mirror system of claim 39, wherein said video images are derived from a rearward facing video camera of the vehicle.

41. The interior rearview mirror system of claim 32 further comprising at least one of a graphic overlay of said video images and an image highlight of said video images.

42. The interior rearview mirror system of claim 32, wherein said information display includes directional indicia.

43. The interior rearview mirror system of claim 32, wherein said reflective element comprises a transflective reflective element.

44. The interior rearview mirror system of claim 32, wherein said voice input device provides a voice input for a voice recognition device.
