Abstract

A collateral ventilation bypass trap system directly linked with a patient'"'"'s lung or lungs may be utilized to increase the expiratory flow from the diseased lung or lungs, thereby treating one aspect of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. The system includes a trap, a filter/one-way valve, an air carrying conduit and a retention device for securing system elements in position. The system also includes a flow restriction device for controlling the flow of air through the air carrying conduit.

Claims

1. A flow control valve assembly for a collateral ventilation bypass system, comprising:

at least one implantable device connected, at a predetermined site, to at least one lung for removing trapped gases from the lung, the at last one implantable device comprising at least one conduit having first and second ends, the first end extending into the at least one lung at a predetermined location and the second end being positioned outside of the lung, and a sealing device for establishing an airtight seal between the first end of the conduit and the lung; and

a valve assembly at least partially positioned within the at least one conduit for adjusting the flow of gases from the at least one lung through the at least one device thereby creating temporary pressure buildup in the at least one lung.

4. The flow control valve assembly according to claim 1, wherein the valve assembly comprises an iris valve assembly.

5. The flow control valve assembly according to claim 1, wherein the valve assembly comprises a duckbill valve assembly.

6. The flow control valve assembly according to claim 1, wherein the valve assembly comprises a one-way flap valve assembly.

7. The flap control valve assembly according to claim 1, wherein the valve assembly is configured for manual operation.

8. The flow control valve assembly according to claim 1, wherein the valve assembly is configured for automatic operation.
