Abstract

A device for image transmission includes a first scanner at a first location and a second scanner at a second location, with an optical fiber linking the scanners. The first scanner scans the first location and couples light from the first location to the optical fiber. The fiber transmits the light to the second location where the second scanner constructs an image of the second location from the light. The two scanners are synchronized so that the constructed image corresponds directly to the scanned scene. The second scanner may be part of a retinal scanner, so that the image is formed directly on the user'"'"'s retina. In another embodiment, the each of the scanners acts as a transceiver so that imaging is bi-directional.

Claims

44. An image capture apparatus comprising:

a light emitter operable to emit light;

a beam scanner aligned to receive the emitted light and operable to scan the received light in a two-dimensional pattern;

imaging optics aligned to receive the scanned two-dimensional pattern and image the two dimensional scanned pattern onto an object, and further configured to collect light scattered from the object;

a detector configured to receive scattered light from the imaging optics;

an electronic controller coupled to the detector and operable to receive an electrical signal from the detector corresponding to the received scattered light; and

an actuator coupled to the electronic controller operable to modify the relative alignment between the beam scanner and the imaging optics to change an imaged location on the object.

45. The image capture apparatus of claim 44 further comprising:

an optical fiber having a first end configured to receive the emitted light and second end, the optical fiber being configured to transmit the received light from the first end to the second end; and

wherein

the beam scanner is aligned to receive the emitted light from the second end of the optical fiber.

46. The image capture apparatus of claim 44 wherein the light emitter and the detector are mounted on a common substrate.

47. The image capture apparatus of claim 44 wherein the actuator is operable to vary an angle between the beam scanner and the imaging optics.

48. The image capture apparatus of claim 44 wherein the actuator is operable to steer the scanned beam.

49. The image capture apparatus of claim 44 wherein the controller is operable to automatically control the actuator responsive to a change between relative positions of the imaging optics and the object.

50. The image capture apparatus of claim 44 wherein the actuator is operable to modify the alignment of the beam scanner in three axes.

51. The image capture apparatus of claim 44 wherein the actuator comprises a piezoelectric positioner.

52. The image capture apparatus of claim 44 wherein the actuator comprises a shape memory alloy-based positioner.

53. The image capture apparatus of claim 44 wherein the beam scanner comprises a mechanically resonant scanner.

54. The image capture apparatus of claim 44 wherein the beam scanner comprises a MEMs scanner.

55. The image capture apparatus of claim 44 wherein the object includes a portion of a human body.

56. A method for capturing an image comprising:

scanning a beam of light from a beam scanner in a scanned pattern through imaging optics onto a location on a surface;

detecting light scattered by the surface; and

responsive to detecting a change in the light scattered by the surface, steering the beam scanner relative to the imaging optics to change the trajectory of the scanned pattern.

57. The method for capturing an image of claim 56 wherein the beam is scanned in a two-dimensional scanned pattern.

58. The method for capturing an image of claim 56 wherein the beam is scanned in a two-dimensional scanned pattern that is substantially a raster pattern.

59. The method for capturing an image of claim 56 wherein the beam scanner is mechanically resonant.

60. The method for capturing an image of claim 56 wherein the change in the light scattered by the surface corresponds to a change in relative position between the imaging optics and the surface;

and wherein the trajectory of the scanned pattern is changed to substantially maintain the location of the scanned pattern on the surface.

61. The method for capturing an image of claim 56 wherein steering the beam scanner comprises driving an actuator.

62. A system for scanning a field of view comprising:

a light source operable to emit light;

an optical fiber having a first end aligned to receive emitted light from the light source and a second end;

a MEMs scanner aligned to receive the light from the second end of the optical fiber and operable to scan the light through a partially-reflective imaging optic in a pattern having a field of view; and

a photo-detector aligned to receive light scattered from the field of view.

63. The system for scanning a field of view of claim 62 wherein the photo-detector is positioned to receive light scattered from the field of view through the partially-reflective imaging optic.

64. The system for scanning a field of view of claim 62 further comprising:

a second optical fiber aligned to receive light scattered from the field of view;

and wherein the photo-detector is aligned to receive light scattered from the field of view through the second optical fiber.
