Abstract

An apparatus may be provided for determining a signature from an article in a reading volume of the apparatus. The apparatus can comprise a source operable to generate a coherent beam and a beam directing member operable to direct the coherent beam into the reading volume. The apparatus may also comprise a detector arrangement for collecting signals created by scatter of the coherent beam within the reading volume, wherein different ones of the signals relate to scatter from different parts of the reading volume, the detector arrangement having a numerical aperture greater than a predetermined minimum and a processor operable to determine a signature for an article in the reading volume from the collected signals. Use of such apparatus can be repeated whenever required to test authenticity of the article. Using this system, it has been discovered that it is essentially pointless to go to the effort and expense of making specially prepared tokens, since unique characteristics are measurable in a straightforward manner from a wide variety of every day articles.

Claims

1. An apparatus for determining a signature from an article in a reading volume of the apparatus, the apparatus comprising:

a source operable to generate a coherent beam;

a beam directing member operable to direct the coherent beam into the reading volume;

a detector arrangement for collecting signals created by scatter of the coherent beam within the reading volume, wherein different ones of the signals relate to scatter from different parts of the reading volume, the detector arrangement having a numerical aperture greater than a predetermined minimum; and

a processor operable to determine a signature for an article in the reading volume from the collected signals.

2. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the detector arrangement is operable to collect signals from each of a plurality of different parts of the reading volume simultaneously, and wherein each such signal is captured at the same numerical aperture.

3. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the predetermined minimum is greater than approximately 0.1.

4. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein each signal includes information describing the surface of an article at a point of incidence of the coherent beam onto the article.

5. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the reading volume has a depth from the beam directing member in the range 0 m to 10 m.

6. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the beam directing member comprises a focussing member operable to focus the coherent beam at a distance within in the reading volume.

7. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the beam directing member is operable to raster the coherent beam through the reading volume.

8. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the beam directing member is operable to cause the coherent beam to be linearly focussed in the reading volume.

9. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the detector arrangement comprises at least one photodetector.

10. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the detector arrangement comprises a photodetector operable to detect a signal reflected back along the path of the coherent beam.

11. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the detector arrangement comprises a plurality of photodetectors, each operable to detect signals reflected at respectively different angles to the path of the coherent beam.

12. The apparatus of claim 11, wherein detector arrangement is operable to provide light captured over the same numerical aperture to each photodetector.

13. The apparatus of claim 12, wherein the detector arrangement comprises a lightpipe or a fibre optic lightguide.

14. The apparatus of claim 13, wherein the lightpipe or fibreoptic lightguide is operable to deliver light to a sensor with the same angle of divergence as was possessed by light incident into the lightpipe.

15. The apparatus of claim 11, wherein the detector arrangement includes an interference filter.

16. The apparatus of any of claim 11, wherein the detector arrangement uses a common optical system to carry light to a plurality of sensors.

17. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the processor is operable to include in the signature a contribution from a comparison between signals received from a single detector channel.

18. The apparatus of claim 17, wherein the comparison involves a cross-correlation.

19. The apparatus of claim 1, configured to read reflected signals from an article moving through the reading volume.

20. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising a database of previously recorded signatures, wherein the apparatus is operable to access the database and perform a comparison to establish whether the database contains a match to the signature of an article that has been placed in the reading volume.

21. The apparatus of claim 20, wherein the apparatus is operable in to allow the signature to be added to the database if no match is found.

22. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the processor is further operable to determine a thumbnail signature of the article.

23. The apparatus of claim 22, further operable to store the signature with its thumbnail digital signature in a database.

24. The apparatus of claim 23, wherein the signature is stored with its thumbnail signature in the database conditional on there being no match between it and any signature already stored in the database.

25. The apparatus of claim 24, further comprising:

a database of previously recorded signatures and their thumbnail signatures; and

a comparator operable to search the database to seek at least one candidate match by performing a comparison between the determined thumbnail signature and the previously recorded thumbnail signatures; and

to determine for any candidate match whether there is a match by performing a comparison between the determined signature and the at least one previously recorded signatures.

26. The apparatus of claim 25, wherein the comparator is further operable to determine for each match a confidence level based on degree of similarity between the determined signature and the previously recorded signature found to have a match.

27. The apparatus of claim 25, wherein the comparator is further operable to split the determined signature into blocks of contiguous data and to perform a comparison operation between each block and respective blocks of the stored signature.

28. The apparatus of claim 27, wherein the comparator is further operable to compare an attribute of a comparison result from each block comparison to an expected attribute of the block comparison to determine a compensation value for use in determining a comparison result;

and wherein the comparison unit is further operable to determine a similarity result between the determined signature and the stored signature, using the compensation value to adjust the determined signature.

29. The apparatus of claim 28, wherein the comparator is further operable to apply the compensation value to adjust the determined signature to compensate for damage to the access token and/or a non-linearity in the determination of the determined signature.

30. The apparatus of claim 28, wherein the comparator is further operable to apply the compensation value to adjust the determined signature to compensate for a non-linearity in the relationship between the different parts of the reading volume.

The apparatus of claim 27, wherein the comparator is further operable to compare an actual cross-correlation peak location of a comparison result between a block of the determined signature and the corresponding block of the stored signature to an expected cross correlation peak location to determine the compensation value for use in determining a comparison result.

The apparatus of claim 31, wherein the comparator is further operable to determine the compensation value by estimating a function of best fit to the cross-correlation peak locations for each of the block comparisons, the function of best fit representing an average deviation from the expected cross-correlation peak locations.

33. The apparatus of claim 27, wherein the comparator is further operable to calculate a similarity result for each compared block.

34. The apparatus of claim 33, wherein the comparator is further operable to compare the similarity result for at least one predetermined block to a predetermined similarity threshold.

35. The apparatus claim 34, wherein a comparator is further operable to return a negative comparison result in the event of the similarity result for the at least one predetermined block being below a predetermined similarity threshold, regardless of a similarity result for the signatures as a whole.

36. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the detector arrangement comprises at least two detector modules, each operable to collect signals from each of a plurality of different parts of the reading volume simultaneously, and wherein at least one signal collected by a first detector module and at least one signal collected by a second detector module originate from a common part of the reading volume, and wherein each such signal is captured at the same numerical aperture.

37. The apparatus of claim 36, wherein each detector module corresponds to a set of detector channels, and wherein the processor is operable to utilise when generating the signature a comparison between signals received at different detector channel sets.

38. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein processor includes an analog to digital converter and a processing unit.

39. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the processor is operable to determine the signature on the basis of a subset of the data collected by the detector arrangement.

40. Use of the apparatus of claim 1 in order to populate a database with signatures by reading a succession of articles.

41. Use of the apparatus of claim 1 in order to verify authenticity of an article.

42. Use of the apparatus of claim 1 in order to ascertain whether an article has been tampered with.

43. Use of the apparatus of claim 1 in order to validate an entitlement token.

44. A method of verifying an article, the method comprising:

determining a signature for the article using an apparatus according to claim 1;

comparing the signature so determined to a record signature for an article; and

determining a verification result in dependence upon a similarity between the signature and the record signature.

64. The system of claim 59, wherein at least one of the first and second determining steps is carried out using the apparatus of claim 1.

45. A method for determining a signature from an article in a reading volume, the method comprising:

generating a coherent beam;

directing the coherent beam into the reading volume;

collecting signals created by scatter of the coherent beam within the reading volume, wherein different ones of the signals relate to scatter from different parts of the reading volume, using a detector arrangement having a numerical aperture greater than a predetermined minimum; and

determining a signature for an article in the reading volume from the collected signals.

46. The method of claim 45, wherein the predetermined minimum is greater than approximately 0.1.

47. The method of claim 45, wherein each signal includes information describing the surface of an article at a point of incidence of the coherent beam onto the article.

48. The method of claim 45, wherein the reading volume has a depth from the beam directing member in the range 0 m to 10 m.

49. The method of claim 45, further comprising rastering the coherent beam through the reading volume.

50. The method of claim 45, further comprising linearly focussing the coherent beam in the reading volume.

51. The method of claim 45, further comprising including in the signature a contribution from a comparison between signals received from a single detector channel.

52. The method of claim 45, further comprising accessing a database of previously recorded signatures and performing a comparison to establish whether the database contains a match to the signature of an article that has been placed in the reading volume.

53. The method of claim 45, further comprising determining a thumbnail signature of the article.

54. The method of claim 53, further comprising searching a database of previously recorded signatures and their thumbnail signatures to seek at least one candidate match by performing a comparison between the determined thumbnail signature and the previously recorded thumbnail signatures;

and determining for any candidate match whether there is a match by comparing between the determined signature and the at least one previously recorded signatures.

55. The method of claim 52, further comprising splitting the determined signature into blocks of contiguous data and performing a comparison operation between each block and respective blocks of the stored signature.

56. The method of claim 45, further comprising providing light captured over the same numerical aperture to each photodetector.

57. The method of claim 45, further comprising capturing reflected light using a lightpipe.

58. The method of claim 45, further comprising passing captured light through an interference filter.

65. The system of claim 59, wherein at least one of the first and second determining steps comprises the method of claim 45.

59. An system for verifying the authenticity of an article, the system comprising:

determining a signature from an article using an apparatus operable to direct a coherent beam into a reading volume where the article is arranged, operable to collect signals created by scatter of the coherent beam within the reading volume, wherein different ones of the signals relate to scatter from different parts of the reading volume, the detector arrangement having a numerical aperture greater than a predetermined minimum, and operable to determine a signature for an article in the reading volume from the collected signals;

storing the signature so determined in a database;

determining a signature from an article using an apparatus operable to direct a coherent beam into a reading volume where the article is arranged, operable to collect signals created by scatter of the coherent beam within the reading volume, wherein different ones of the signals relate to scatter from different parts of the reading volume, the detector arrangement having a numerical aperture greater than a predetermined minimum, and operable to determine a signature for an article in the reading volume from the collected signals; and

comparing the signature so generated to the signature stored in the database to determine whether the same article was the source of both signatures.

60. The system of claim 59, wherein the first determining step is carried out at a manufacture location for an article.

61. The system of claim 59, wherein the second determining step is carried out at a location other than the manufacture location for the article.

62. The system of claim 59, wherein the first determining step further comprises digitally signing the signature.

63. The system of claim 62, wherein the storing step further comprises checking the digital signature to determine the authenticity of the article signature and completing the storing step in dependence upon the authenticity result.
