Abstract

A method and tool for an integrated power switching device configuration tool and fault response tolerance calculator determines the fault response tolerance characteristics of a power switching device, adjusts the predicted fault responses based on the fault response tolerances and displays the adjusted fault response results. The fault response tolerance calculation tool uses configuration information defined during the configuring of the power switching device and applies this information to an overcurrent response curve selected by a user. The tool calculates the different fault response tolerances and adjusts predicted response times accordingly. The adjusted fault responses are displayed to the user along with a range of recommended fault response values.

Claims

1. A power switching device configuration tool comprising:

a user interface communicating with a controller, said controller coupled to a power switching device, said user interface further comprising;

a configuration means; and

a fault response tolerance calculator;

said configuration means providing configuration information for said power switching device to said fault response tolerance calculator, said fault response tolerance calculator computing adjusted fault responses from said configuration information.

2. The power switching device configuration tool of claim 1 wherein the adjusted fault responses comprise fault response tolerances.

3. The power switching device configuration tool of claim 1 wherein the adjusted fault responses are displayed by said user interface.

4. The power switching device configuration tool of claim 3 wherein said user interface comprises a Graphical User Interface (GUI) for displaying said adjusted fault responses.

5. The power switching device configuration tool of claim 3 wherein a recommended fault response is displayed by said user interface.

6. The power switching device configuration tool of claim 1 wherein said user interface is hosted on a PC based platform.

7. The power switching device configuration tool of claim 1, wherein said configuration information comprises overcurrent response curves.

8. The power switching device configuration tool of claim 1, wherein said configuration information comprises an electrical fault current threshold and a pick-up current.

9. A method for calculating fault responses for a power switching device comprising:

inputting configuration information for said power switching device into a user interface; and

,

calculating adjusted fault responses for said power switching device based on said configuration information.

10. The method of claim 9 wherein said configuration information comprises overcurrent response curves.

11. The method of claim 9 wherein said configuration information comprises electrical fault current information.

12. The method of claim 11 wherein said electrical fault current information comprises pick-up current and fault threshold values.

13. The method of claim 9 wherein said user interface is hosted on a PC based platform.

14. The method of claim 9, wherein said adjusted fault responses comprise a fault response tolerance.

15. The method of claim 9, further comprising said user interface displaying said adjusted fault responses.

16. The method of claim 15, further comprising providing a Graphical User Interface (GUI) for displaying said adjusted fault responses.

17. A computer readable media containing computer code instructing a processor within a user interface to:

receive configuration information for said power switching device; and

,

calculate adjusted fault responses for said power switching device from said configuration information.

18. The computer readable media of claim 17 wherein said user interface is hosted on a PC based platform.

19. The computer readable media of claim 17, wherein said configuration information comprises overcurrent response curves.

20. The computer readable media of claim 17, wherein said power switching device configuration information comprises electrical fault current information.

21. The computer readable media of claim 20, wherein said electrical fault current information comprises pick-up current and fault threshold values.

22. The computer readable media of claim 17, wherein said computer code instructs said processor to use said user interface to display said adjusted fault responses.

23. The computer readable media of claim 22, wherein said user interface comprises a Graphical User Interface (GUI).

24. The computer readable media of claim 22, wherein said computer code instructs said processor to use said user interface to display a recommended fault response value.

25. The computer readable media of claim 17, wherein said adjusted fault responses comprise a fault response tolerance.
