Abstract

An apparatus and method for registering a bone of a patient with a computer assisted surgery system includes a support frame and a number of magnetic sensor arrays movably coupled to the support frame. Each of the magnetic sensor arrays may be pivoted and translated with respect to the frame. In addition, each of the magnetic sensor arrays may include a circuit for sensing a magnetic field generated by a magnetic source coupled to the bone of the patient. Each circuit may include one or more magnetic sensors, a processing circuit, an angle sensor, a distance sensor, and a transmitter. The magnetic sensors and processing circuit cooperate to determine a position of the magnetic source. The angle sensor, distance sensor, and processing circuit cooperate to determine a displacement of the magnetic sensor array from a reference point. The processing circuit controls the transmitter to transmit data indicative of the position of the magnetic source.

Claims

1. An apparatus for registering a bone of a patient with a computer assisted orthopaedic surgery system, the apparatus comprising:

a support frame;

a first housing coupled to the support frame and movable with respect to the support frame;

a first circuit located in the first housing, the first circuit being configured to sense a magnetic field of a first magnetic source and determine a position of the first magnetic source relative to the first circuit;

a second housing coupled to the support frame and movable with respect to the frame; and

a second circuit located in the second housing, the second circuit being configured to sense a magnetic field of a second magnetic source and determine a position of the second magnetic source relative to the second circuit.

2. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the support frame includes a reflective sensor array.

3. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the support frame includes a wireless transmitter circuit coupled thereto.

4. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the first and second housings are configured to separately pivot and translate with respect to the frame.

5. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein at least one of the first and second circuits includes a magnetic sensor selected from the group consisting of:

a superconducting quantum interference (SQUID) magnetic sensor, an anisotropic magnetoresistive (AMR) magnetic sensor, a giant magnetoresistive (GMR) magnetic sensor, and a Hall-effect magnetic sensor.

The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the first circuit includes (i) a magnetic sensor configured to sense the magnetic flux density of the first magnetic source and (ii) a processing circuit electrically coupled to the magnetic sensor and configured to determine position data indicative of the position of the first magnetic source.

7. The apparatus of claim 6, wherein the first circuit further includes an angle sensor electrically coupled to the processing circuit, the angle sensor being configured to determine an angle defined between the first housing and a predefined axis.

8. The apparatus of claim 7, wherein the first circuit further includes a distance sensor electrically coupled to the processing circuit, the distance sensor configured to determine a distance of translation of the first housing with respect to a predefined reference point.

9. The apparatus of claim 8, wherein the first circuit further includes a transmitter electrically coupled to the processing circuit, the processing circuit being configured to control the transmitter to transmit the position data, the determined angle, and the determined distance to a computer.

10. The apparatus of claim 9, wherein the transmitter is a wireless transmitter.

11. The apparatus of claim 6, wherein the first circuit further includes an indicator electrically coupled to the processing circuit and wherein the processing circuit is configured to activate the indicator when the sensed magnetic flux density is greater than a predetermined threshold value.

12. The apparatus of claim 11, wherein the indicator is a visual indicator.

13. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the first circuit includes (i) a first magnetic sensor configured to sense a magnetic flux density of the first magnetic source and (ii) a first processing circuit electrically coupled to the first magnetic sensor and configured to determine position data indicative of the position of the first magnetic source, and

wherein the second circuit includes (i) a second magnetic sensor configured to sense a magnetic flux density of the second magnetic source and (ii) a second processing circuit electrically coupled to the second magnetic sensor and configured to determine position data indicative the relative position of the second magnetic source.

14. The apparatus of claim 13, wherein the first circuit further includes a first angle sensor electrically coupled to the first processing circuit, the first angle sensor being configured to determine a first angle defined between the first housing and a predefined axis, and

wherein the second circuit further includes a second angle sensor electrically coupled to the second processing circuit, the second angle sensor being configured to determine a second angle defined between the first housing and the predefined axis.

The apparatus of claim 14, wherein the first circuit further includes a first distance sensor electrically coupled to the first processing circuit, the first distance sensor configured to determine a first distance of translation of the first housing with respect to a predefined reference point, and

wherein the second circuit further includes a second distance sensor electrically coupled to the second processing circuit, the second distance sensor configured to determine a second distance of translation of the second housing with respect to the predefined reference point.

The apparatus of claim 15, wherein the first circuit further includes a first transmitter electrically coupled to the first processing circuit, the first processing circuit being configured to control the first transmitter to transmit the first position data, the first angle, and the first distance to a computer, and

wherein the second circuit further includes a second transmitter electrically coupled to the second processing circuit, the second processing circuit being configured to control the second transmitter to transmit the second position data, the second angle, and the second distance to the computer.

17. The apparatus of claim 16, wherein the first and second transmitters are wireless transmitters.

The apparatus of claim 13, wherein the first circuit further includes a first indicator electrically coupled to the first processing circuit, the first processing circuit being configured to activate the first indicator while the sensed magnetic flux density of the first magnetic source is greater than a predetermined threshold value;

and

wherein the second magnetic field sensing circuit further includes a second indicator electrically coupled to the second processing circuit, the second processing circuit being configured to activate the second indicator while the sensed magnetic flux density of the second magnetic source is greater than a predetermined threshold value.

19. The apparatus of claim 18, wherein the first and second indicators are visual indicators.

20. A method of registering a bony anatomy of a patient with a computer assisted orthopaedic surgery system, the method comprising:

coupling a first magnetic source and a second magnetic source to the bony anatomy of the patient;

positioning a first magnetic sensor array in a magnetic field of the first magnetic source;

positioning a second magnetic sensor array in a magnetic field of the second magnetic source;

determining first position data indicative of the position of the first magnetic source relative to the first magnetic sensor array and second position data indicative of the position of the second magnetic source relative to the second magnetic sensor array;

determining a first distance of translation of the first magnetic sensor array with respect to a reference point and a second distance of translation of the second magnetic sensor array with respect to the reference point;

determining a first angle between the first magnetic sensor array and a reference axis and a second angle between the second magnetic sensor array and the reference axis; and

transmitting the first and second position data, the first and second distances, and the first and second angles to a computer.

21. The method of claim 20, wherein positioning the first and second magnetic sensor arrays comprises pivoting the first and second magnetic sensor arrays with respect to a common axis.

22. The method of claim 20, wherein positioning the first and second magnetic sensor arrays comprises moving the first magnetic sensor array along a first longitudinal axis and moving the second magnetic sensor array along a second longitudinal axis.

23. The method of claim 20, wherein determining first position data comprises determining at least one component of the three-dimensional magnetic flux density of the first magnetic source at a first point in space and determining second position data comprises determining at least one component of the three-dimensional magnetic flux density of the second magnetic source at a second position in space.

24. The method of claim 20, wherein determining first and second position data comprises determining at least five degrees of freedom of the first and second magnetic sources.

25. The method of claim 20, further comprising determining third position data indicative of a position of a support frame coupled to the first and second magnetic sources relative to a reference point.

26. The method of claim 25, wherein determining third position data comprises determining the position of the support frame using a reflective sensor array coupled with the support frame.

27. The method of claim 20, wherein the coupling step comprises implanting the first and second magnetic sources in the bony anatomy of the patient.

28. The method of claim 20, wherein the coupling step comprises coupling a first cylindrical, dipole magnet and a second cylindrical, dipole magnet to the bony anatomy of the patient.

29. The method of claim 20, wherein the coupling step comprises coupling a first magnetic source generating a first magnetic field and a second magnetic source generating a second magnetic field to the bony anatomy of the patient, wherein the first and second magnetic sources are separated by a distance such that the first and second magnetic fields do not substantially interfere with each other.

30. The method of claim 20, wherein the first and second magnetic sources are coupled to the bone using a jig.

31. The method of claim 20, further comprising the steps of:

retrieving an image of the bony anatomy having indicia of the position of the first and second magnetic sources relative to the bony anatomy from a database; and

creating a graphically rendered image of the bony anatomy based on the image data, the first and second position data, the first and second distance data, and the first and second angles.

32. The method of claim 31, wherein the retrieving step comprises retrieving an image selected from the group consisting of a computed tomography (CT) image of the bony anatomy, a fluoroscopy image of the bony anatomy, and an X-ray image of the bony anatomy.

33. The method of claim 31, wherein the creating step comprises creating a graphically rendered image of the bony anatomy having surface contours determined based on the retrieved image.

34. The method of claim 31, further comprising displaying the graphically rendered image of the bony anatomy in a location and orientation based on the first and second position data, the first and second distance data, and the first and second angles.

35. The method of claim 20, further comprising (i) compensating measurements of the first magnetic sensor array based on an offset voltage of the first magnetic sensor array and (ii) compensating measurements of the second magnetic sensor array based on an offset voltage of the second magnetic sensor array.

36. The method of claim 20, further comprising (i) compensating measurements of the first magnetic sensor array based on the Earth'"'"'s magnetic field and (ii) compensating measurements of the second magnetic sensor array based on the Earth'"'"'s magnetic field.

37. The method of claim 20, further comprising (i) activating a first indicator based on the magnetic flux density of the first magnetic source and (ii) activating a second indicator based on the magnetic flux density of the second magnetic source.

38. A method of registering a bony anatomy of a patient with a computer assisted orthopaedic surgery system, the method comprising:

coupling a first magnetic source to the bony anatomy;

coupling a second magnetic source to the bony anatomy at an angle relative to the first magnetic source and at a distance from the first magnetic source such that a first magnetic field generated by the first magnetic source and a second magnetic field generated by the second magnetic source do not substantially interfere with each other;

determining a first position of the first magnetic source using a first magnetic sensor array;

determining a second position of the second magnetic source using a second magnetic sensor array;

determining a third position of the first magnetic sensor array relative to a reference point;

determining a fourth position of the second magnetic sensor array relative to the reference point; and

creating a graphically rendered image of the bony anatomy based on the first, second, third, and fourth positions.
