Abstract

A method is provided for performing a total knee arthroplasty. The method includes making a primary incision near a knee joint of a patient and resecting medial and lateral condyles of the femur of the leg to create at least one femoral cut surface. The resecting step is performed without dislocating the knee joint. The method also includes balancing various ligament tensions to obtain desired tension and moving a femoral component of a total knee implant through the primary incision. The method further includes positioning the femoral component with respect to the at least one femoral cut surface.

Claims

1. An inlaid articular implant for implantation in a recess created in an articular surface on a bone, the implant comprising:

a body having an outer surface configured and dimensioned to form a continuation of the articular surface when implanted in the recess, wherein the implant includes a material that promotes biological resurfacing of the bone.

2. The implant of claim 1 wherein the body is formed as a scaffold.

3. The implant of claim 2 wherein the scaffold is formed of fibrous connective materials.

4. The implant of claim 2 wherein the scaffold is formed of collagen.

5. The implant of claim 2 wherein the scaffold is formed of submucosal tissue.

6. The implant of claim 2 wherein the scaffold is formed of bone.

7. The implant of claim 2 wherein the scaffold includes a first layer and a second layer.

8. The implant of claim 7 wherein the first layer is made of a first material and the second layer is made of a second material and wherein the first material differs from the second material.

9. The implant of claim 8 wherein the first layer includes bone growth promoting materials.

10. The implant of claim 9 wherein the second layer includes cartilage.

11. The implant of claim 10 wherein the second layer includes cells.

12. An inlaid articular implant for implantation in a recess created in an articular surface on a bone, the implant comprising:

an outer layer having an outer surface configured and dimensioned to form a continuation of the articular surface when implanted in the recess; and

a base layer having an inner surface configured and dimensioned to engage bone tissue when inserted in the recess,

wherein the outer layer includes cartilage and the inner layer includes a bone growth promoting material.

13. The implant of claim 12 further comprising an intermediate layer disposed between the base and outer layers.

14. The implant of claim 12 wherein each of the outer and base layers is formed with a separate scaffold.

15. The implant of claim 12 wherein a single scaffold extends between the outer and base layers.

16. The implant of claim 12 wherein the base layer includes cortical cancellous bone chips or powder.

17. The implant of claim 16 wherein the base layer includes demineralized bone matrix.

18. The implant of claim 12 wherein the base layer includes an anti-inflammatory or an immunosuppressant.

19. The implant of claim 18 wherein the base layer includes bone chips or powder.

20. The implant of claim 12 wherein the outer layer includes stem cells.
