Abstract

A complex coil and a fixture for forming same configured such that loops are formed having various configurations relative to each other. The configurations provide improved thrombus formation and reduced rotation or tumbling once implanted. The complex coil is formed of a material that may deformed for purposes of placing the complex coil into a catheter and returns to a complex shape that includes said loops once deployed.

Claims

1. A complex coil comprising:

a first and second loop aligned to form a first FIG. 8 pattern in a first plane;

a third and forth loop aligned to form a second FIG. 8 pattern in a second plane;

said first and second plane being substantially parallel to each other.

2. The complex coil of claim 1 wherein none of said first, second, third and fourth loops share a common longitudinal axis.

3. The complex coil of claim 1 wherein said first FIG. 8 pattern is rotated within said first plane relative to said second FIG. 8 pattern.

4. The complex coil of claim 3 wherein said first FIG. 8 pattern is rotated approximately 90 degrees within said first plane relative to said second FIG. 8 pattern.

5. The complex coil of claim 1 wherein said first and third loops have a common longitudinal axis.

6. The complex coil of claim 1 wherein said second and fourth loops have a common longitudinal axis.

7. The complex coil of claim 1 further comprising fifth and sixth loops having longitudinal axes that are angled approximately 90 degrees relative to longitudinal axes of the first, second, third, and fourth loops.

8. The complex coil of claim 7 wherein said fifth and sixth loops have a common longitudinal axis.

9. A fixture for forming a three-dimensional complex coil comprising:

a body;

a first pin extending from said body and having a longitudinal axis extending in the direction of an x-axis;

a second pin extending from said body and having a longitudinal axis extending in the direction of said x-axis;

a third pin extending from said body and having a longitudinal axis extending in the direction of a y-axis;

a fourth pin extending from said body and having a longitudinal axis extending in the direction of said y-axis;

a fifth pin extending from said body and having a longitudinal axis extending in the direction of said y-axis; and

,

a sixth pin extending from said body and having a longitudinal axis extending in the direction of said y-axis;

wherein said x-, y-, and z-axes are all perpendicular to each other;

wherein said longitudinal axes of said third and fourth pins define a first plane;

wherein said longitudinal axes of said fifth and sixth pins define a second plane;

wherein said first plane is perpendicular to said second plane.

10. The fixture of claim 9 wherein said first and second pins have a common longitudinal axis.

11. The fixture of claim 9 further comprising a seventh and eighth pin each extending from said body in opposite directions along a z-axis.

12. The fixture of claim 9 wherein all of said pins have circular cross-sections taken perpendicularly to their respective longitudinal axes.

13. The fixture of claim 11 wherein said seventh and eighth pins have rectangular cross-sections taken perpendicularly to their respective longitudinal axes.

14. A method of making a complex coil comprising:

forming a first and second loop in a first FIG. 8 pattern relatively contained in a first plane;

forming a third and fourth loop in a second FIG. 8 pattern relatively contained in a second plane;

wherein said first and second plane are substantially parallel to each other.

15. The method of claim 14 further comprising forming at least one loop connecting said first and second FIG. 8 patterns, said at least one complete loop defining a third plane that is perpendicular to said first and second planes.

16. The method of claim 15 wherein forming at least one loop connecting said first and second FIG. 8 patterns comprises forming two loops defining a third and fourth planes that are both perpendicular to said first and second planes.

17. The method of claim 16 wherein forming two loops defining a third and fourth planes that are both perpendicular to said first and second planes comprises two loops defining a third and fourth planes that are both perpendicular to said first and second planes and are further parallel to each other.

18. The method of claim 14 wherein forming a first and second loop in a first FIG. 8 pattern relatively contained in a first plane comprises forming at least one open loop.

19. The method of claim 14 wherein forming a third and a fourth loop in a second FIG. 8 pattern relatively contained in a second plane comprises forming at least one open loop.

20. A complex coil comprising a plurality of connected complete loops, each of said complete loops having longitudinal axes that extend parallel to an axis selected from the group, x-axis and y-axis, said x-axis being perpendicular to said y-axis, and wherein at least one of said plurality of complete loops has a longitudinal axis extending parallel to the x-axis and wherein at least one of said plurality of complete loops has a longitudinal axis extending parallel to the y-axis.

21. A complex coil comprising a plurality of loops arranged to form a toroid.

22. A complex coil comprising a plurality of loops each contained within planes that intersect with each other at a common intersection axis.

23. A fixture for forming a complex coil comprising a toroid.

24. The fixture of claim 23 wherein said toroid comprises an open toroid.

25. The fixture of claim 23 wherein said toroid comprises a closed toroid.

26. A method of forming a complex coil comprising:

wrapping a coiled wire around a toroid-shaped fixture;

heat setting the coiled wire;

removing the coiled wire from the fixture.

27. The method of claim 26 wherein wrapping a coiled wire around a toroid-shaped fixture comprises passing the coiled wire through a center of the fixture and around an outside of the fixture a plurality of times, thereby forming a plurality of loops.

28. The method of claim 27 wherein forming a plurality of loops comprises forming four loops around the fixture, each loop spaced approximately 90 degrees from adjacent loops.

29. The method of claim 27 further comprising assessing a size of an aneurysm in which the complex coil is to be placed and determining a number of loops to be formed based said aneurysm size.

30. The method of claim 26 wherein heat setting the coiled wire comprises heating the coiled wire to 1100 F for a predetermined period of time.

31. The method of claim 30 wherein heating the coiled wire to 1100 F for a predetermined period of time comprises heating the coiled wire to 1100 F for a 5 to 60 minutes.

32. A complex coil comprising:

a first pair of loops substantially contained in a first plane;

a second pair of loops substantially contained in a second plane;

said first plane being substantially orthogonal to said second plane.
