Abstract

A system for analyzing one or more ion species of a sample including a first ion mobility filter associated with a first flow path for passing first ions of the sample, a second ion mobility filter associated with a second flow path for passing second ions of the sample, a first outlet from the first flow path for passing a portion of the first ions from the first flow path to the second flow path, and a first outlet from the second flow path for removing neutral particles from the second flow path where the first outlet from the second flow path is upstream of the second ion mobility filter in relation to the ion flow in the second flow path.

Claims

1. A system for analyzing one or more ion species of a sample, the system comprising,

a first ion mobility filter associated with a first flow path for passing first ions of the sample,

a second ion mobility filter associated with a second flow path for passing second ions of the sample,

a first outlet from the first flow path for passing a portion of the first ions from the first flow path to the second flow path, and

a first outlet from the second flow path for removing neutral particles from the second flow path, the first outlet from the second flow path being upstream of the second ion mobility filter in relation to the ion flow in the second flow path.

The system of claim 1 comprising a gas source in communication with the second flow path for providing a gas flow that is substantially opposite to the ion flow in the second flow path, the gas flow transporting the neutral particles toward the first outlet from the second flow path and away from the first outlet from the first flow path.

3. The system of claim 2 comprising a second outlet from the first flow path for passing a portion of the first ions from the first flow path to a third flow path.

4. The system of claim 3 comprising a third ion mobility filter associated with the third flow path for passing third ions of the sample.

5. The system of claim 4 wherein the gas source is in communication with the third flow path for providing a gas flow that is substantially opposite to the ion flow in the third flow path, the gas flow transporting the neutral particles toward the first outlet from the third flow path and away from the second outlet from the first flow path.

6. The system of claim 1, wherein the second ions include a portion of the first ions.

7. The system of claim 6, wherein the third ions include a portion of the first ions.

8. The system of claim 4, wherein at least one of the first, second, and third ion mobility filters includes a time-varying electric field filter.

9. The system of claim 4, wherein at least one of the first, second, and third ion mobility filters includes an ion mobility spectrometer (IMS).

10. The system of claim 1 comprising a first ion detector in the second flow path.

16. The system of claim 8, wherein at least one of the first, second, and third ion mobility filters includes a differential ion mobility spectrometer (DMS) filter.

17. The system of claim 4 comprising a controller for automatically controlling at least one of the first, second, and third ion mobility filters.

18. The system of claim 1 comprising a mass spectrometer in fluid communication with the first flow path.

19. The system of claim 1 comprising a gas chromatograph for providing one or more ion species of the sample to the first flow path.

20. The system of claim 1, wherein the first and second flow paths are formed at least in part by one or more substrates.

21. The system of claim 1, wherein the first and second flow paths are arranged substantially adjacently.

22. The system of claim 4, wherein the first, second, and third flow paths are formed at least in part by one or more substrates.

23. The system of claim 4, wherein the first, second, and third flow paths are arranged in a U-shaped configuration.

24. The system of claim 1, wherein the first and second ion mobility filters are included in a polymer based package.

25. The system of claim 10 comprising a processor for receiving detection data from the first detector and generating a three-dimensional dispersion plot based on conditions of the first and second mobility filters and the detection data.

11. The system of claim 11, wherein the first ion detector includes one or more electrodes.

12. The system of claim 11 comprising a second ion detector in the first flow path.

13. The system of claim 12, wherein the second ion detector includes one or more electrodes.

14. The system of claim 13 comprising:

i) a second outlet from the first flow path for passing a portion of the first ions from the first flow path to the third flow path, ii) a third ion mobility filter associated with the third flow path for passing third ions of the sample, and iii) a third ion detector in the third flow path.

15. The system of claim 14, wherein the third ion detector includes one or more electrodes.

26. A method for analyzing one or more ion species of a sample, the system comprising,

filtering first ions of the sample using a first ion mobility filter associated with a first flow path,

filtering second ions of the sample using a second ion mobility filter associated with a second flow path,

passing a portion of the first ions from the first flow path to the second flow path using a first outlet from the first flow path,

removing neutral particles from the second flow path via a first outlet from the second flow path, the first outlet being upstream of the second ion mobility filter in relation to the ion flow in the second flow path.

27. The method of claim 26 comprising providing a gas flow that is substantially opposite to the ion flow in the second flow path, the gas flow transporting the neutral particles toward the first outlet from the second flow path and away from the first outlet from the first flow path.

28. The method of claim 26 comprising passing a portion of the first ions from the first flow path to a third flow path via a second outlet from the first flow path.

29. The method of claim 28 comprising filtering third ions of the sample using a third ion mobility filter associated with the third flow path.

30. The method of claim 29 comprising providing a gas flow that is substantially opposite to the ion flow in the third flow path, the gas flow transporting the neutral particles toward the first outlet from the third flow path and away from the second outlet from the first flow path.

31. The method of claim 30, wherein the second ions include a portion of the first ions.

32. The method of claim 31, wherein the third ions include a portion of the first ions.

33. The system of claim 29, wherein at least one of the first, second, and third ion mobility filters includes a time-varying electric field filter.

34. The method of claim 29, wherein at least one of the first, second, and third ion mobility filters includes an ion mobility spectrometer (IMS).

35. The method of claim 26 comprising detecting ions using a first detector in the second flow path.

36. The method of claim 35, wherein the first ion detector includes one or more electrodes.

37. The method of claim 35 comprising detecting ions using a second ion detector in the first flow path.

38. The method of claim 37, wherein the second ion detector includes one or more electrodes.

39. The method of claim 36 comprising:

i) passing a portion of the first ions from the first flow path to the third flow path via a second outlet from the first flow path, ii) filtering third ions of the sample using a third ion mobility filter associated with the third flow path, and iii) detecting ions using a third ion detector in the third flow path.

40. The method of claim 39, wherein the third ion detector includes one or more electrodes.

41. The method of claim 33, wherein at least one of the first, second, and third ion mobility filters includes a differential ion mobility spectrometer (DMS) filter.

42. The method of claim 29 comprising a controller for automatically controlling at least one of the first, second, and third ion mobility filters.

43. The method of claim 26 comprising coupling a mass spectrometer to the first flow path.

44. The method of claim 26 comprising coupling a gas chromatograph to the first flow path.

45. The method of claim 26, wherein the first and second flow paths are formed at least in part by one or more substrates.

46. The method of claim 26, wherein the first and second flow paths are arranged substantially adjacently.

47. The method of claim 29, wherein the first, second, and third flow paths are formed at least in part by one or more substrates.

48. The method of claim 29, wherein the first, second, and third flow paths are arranged in a U-shaped configuration.

49. The method of claim 26 comprising forming the first and second ion mobility filters in a polymer based package.

50. The method of claim 35 comprising, at a processor, receiving detection data from the first detector and generating a three-dimensional dispersion plot based on conditions of the first and second mobility filters and the detection data.
