Abstract

A conductor for connecting an electrode near a distal end of a medical electrical lead with an implantable medical device connected with a proximal end of the medical electrical lead includes a multi-filar coil wrapped around a central core. The multi-filar coil has an inductance of approximately 0.5 μH or greater, and the central core is non-conducting and provides reinforcement for the multi-filar coil.

Claims

1. A conductor for connecting an electrode near a distal end of a medical electrical lead with an implantable medical device connected to a proximal end of the medical electrical lead, the conductor comprising:

a central non-conducting core; and

a multi-filar coil wrapped around the non-conducting filar, the coil wound to have a RF field compatible inductance.

2. The conductor of claim 1 wherein the electrode comprises a ring electrode.

3. The conductor of claim 1 wherein the co-radially wound, multi-filar coil comprises three filars.

4. The conductor of claim 1 wherein the multi-filar coil includes an insulating sheathing.

5. The conductor of claim 1 wherein the coil has a RF field compatible inductance of approximately 0.5 μ

H or greater.

6. The conductor of claim 1 wherein the coil has a RF field compatible inductance of approximately 1.0 μ

H or greater.

7. The conductor of claim 1 wherein the core comprises liquid crystal polymer fiber.

8. The conductor of claim 1 wherein the core provides longitudinal strength for the coil.

9. The conductor of claim 1 wherein the electrode is crimped to the core thereby providing an electrical connection between the electrode and the coil.

10. The conductor of claim 9 wherein the electrode is crimped to the core to form a 2.5 lbf connection.

11. A lead for an implantable medical device, the lead comprising:

a lead body including a lumen extending from a proximal end to a distal end;

a reinforcing central core extending through the lumen; and

a co-radially wound, multi-filar coil having an inductance of 0.5 μ

H or greater wrapped around the central core.

12. The lead of claim 11 wherein the co-radially wound, multi-filar conductor coil comprises three filars.

13. The lead of claim 11 wherein the multi-filar coil is wrapped in an insulating sheathing.

14. The lead of claim 11 wherein the core comprises liquid crystal polymer fiber.

15. The lead of claim 11 wherein the coil is connected with a ring electrode at a distal end of the lead.

16. The lead of claim 15 wherein the electrode is crimped to the core thereby providing an electrical connection between the electrode and the coil.

17. A conductor having improved inductance for use in a medical electrical lead, the conductor comprising:

a central non-conducting fiber core; and

a co-radially wound, multi-filar coil wrapped around the fiber core and having winding characteristics such that an inductance of the coil is 0.5 μ

H or greater.

18. The conductor of claim 17 wherein the fiber core provides tensile reinforcement to the multi-filar coil.

19. The conductor of claim 17 wherein the fiber core is comprised of a liquid crystal polymer.

20. The conductor of claim 17 wherein the multi-filar coil comprises three filars.
