Abstract

According to various embodiments of the invention a device can announce broadcast traffic in a global access period. Thus, a destination can change its local communication window every global access period. By announcing a local communication window during a global access period it can be more likely that a source device in a network will receive the information because all devices should be active during the global access period. A device can awaken for its local communication window and during the local communication window a source device can schedule a transmission and transmit information to the device.

Claims

1. A method of power management, comprising:

transmitting the time of a local communication window to other devices in a network;

waking from a hibernation state at a predetermined time for the local communication window;

receiving a transmission from another device in the network during the local communication window; and

returning to the hibernation state after the local communication window.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the transmitting of the time of the local communication window occurs during a global communication window.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein a global communication window is based on the amount of traffic transmitted by the network.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein a global communication window is defined by a bridge device.

5. The method of claim 2, wherein a global communication window comprises a predetermined number of superframes of a local communication window for a predetermined device.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein the transmitting of the periodicity of the local communication window occurs during a global communication window.

7. The method of claim 1, further comprising a source device recommending a local communication window.

8. A network device comprising:

a memory, the memory configured to store instructions;

a processor coupled to the memory and configured to execute the instructions to perform the following steps;

transmitting the time of a local communication window to other devices in a network;

waking from a hibernation state at a predetermined time for the local communication window;

receiving a transmission from another device in the network during the local communication window; and

returning to the hibernation state after the local communication window.

9. The network device of claim 8, wherein the transmitting of the time of the local communication window occurs during the global communication window.

10. The network device of claim 8, wherein a global communication window is based on the amount of traffic transmitted by the network.

11. The network device of claim 8, wherein a global communication window is defined by a bridge device.

12. The network device of claim 8, wherein a global communication window comprises a predetermined number of superframes of a local communication window for a predetermined device.

13. The network device of claim 8, wherein transmitting the periodicity of the local communication window occurs during a global communication window.

14. The network device of claim 8, further comprising a source device recommending a local communication window.

15. A method of power management, comprising:

receiving the time of a local communication window from a device in a network;

scheduling a transmission;

waking from a hibernation state at a predetermined time for the local communication window;

transmitting a transmission to the device in the network during the local communication window; and

returning to a hibernation state after the local communication window.

16. The method of claim 15, wherein the transmitting of the time of the local communication window occurs during a global communication window.

17. The method of claim 15, wherein a global communication window is based on the amount of traffic transmitted by the network.

18. The method of claim 15, wherein a global communication window is defined by a bridge device.

19. The method of claim 15, wherein the global communication window comprises a predetermined number of superframes of a local communication window for a predetermined device.

20. The method of claim 15, wherein the transmitting of the periodicity of the local communication window occurs during a global communication window.

21. The method of claim 15, further comprising a source device recommending a local communication window.

22. The method of claim 15, wherein a transmission occurs at the beginning of the local communication window.

23. A network device comprising:

a memory, the memory configured to store instructions;

a processor coupled to the memory and configured to execute the instructions to perform the following steps;

receiving the time of a local communication window from a device in a network;

scheduling a transmission;

waking from a hibernation state at a predetermined time for the local communication window;

transmitting a transmission to the device in the network during the local communication window; and

returning to a hibernation state after the local communication window.

24. The network device of claim 23, wherein the transmitting of the time of the local communication window occurs during a global communication window.

25. The network device of claim 23, wherein a global communication window is based on the amount of traffic transmitted by the network.

26. The network device of claim 23, wherein a global communication window is defined by a bridge device.

27. The network device of claim 23, wherein the global communication window comprises a predetermined number of superframes of a local communication window for a predetermined device.

28. The network device of claim 23, further comprising changing a local communication window during a global communication window.

29. The network device of claim 23, further comprising a source device recommending a local communication window.

30. The network device of claim 23, wherein a transmission occurs at the beginning of the local communication window.
