Abstract

A method is provided for adaptively determining an anti-block braking strategy that includes monitoring a distance differential of at least one target in proximity to a driven vehicle. An anti-lock braking strategy is determined as a function of the distance differential. The anti-locking braking strategy is applied as a function of the distance differential.

Claims

1. A method for adaptively determining an anti-lock braking strategy, the method comprising the steps of:

monitoring a distance differential of at least one target in proximity to a driven vehicle;

determining an anti-lock braking strategy as a function of said distance differential; and

applying said anti-lock braking strategy as a function of said distance differential wherein an anti-lock braking system optimizes said braking strategy between a determined stopping a distance and vehicle stability control in response to said distance differential

3. The method of claim 1 wherein said distance differential is based on said at least one adjacent target forward of said driven vehicle.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein said distance differential is based on said at least one adjacent target rearward of said driven vehicle.

5. The method of claim 1 wherein said distance differential is based on said at least one adjacent target on a side of said driven vehicle.

6. A method for adaptively determining an anti-lock braking strategy, the method comprising the steps of:

determining a distance available to stop between a driven vehicle and a target;

determining a maximum distance required to stop between said driven vehicle and said target;

determining if said distance available to stop is greater than said maximum distance required to stop; and

adopting an anti-lock braking strategy using maximum vehicle stability controls in response to said distance available to stop being greater than said maximum distance required to stop.

7. The method of claim 6 wherein said determination of a maximum distance required to stop is based on a current velocity of said driven vehicle, a velocity of said sensed target, and a distance between said driven vehicle and said target.

8. The method of claim 6 further comprising the steps of:

determining a minimum distance required to stop between said driven vehicle and said target;

determining if said distance available to stop is less than said minimum distance required to stop; and

adopting an anti-lock braking strategy using a minimum braking stopping distance braking parameters in response to said distance available to stop being less than said minimum distance required to stop.

9. The method of claim 8 wherein said determination of a minimum distance required to stop is based on a current velocity of said driven vehicle, a velocity of said sensed target, and a distance between said driven vehicle and said target.

The method of claim 8 further comprising the step of adopting an anti-lock braking strategy that includes determining cooperative blended braking-stability control parameters in response to said available stopping distance being less than said maximum distance required to stop but greater than said minimum distance required to stop.

11. The method of claim 10 wherein said cooperative blended braking-stability parameters represent a selective compromise between an optimized vehicle stability control and an optimized stopping distance.

12. The method of claim 6 wherein said target is forward of said driven vehicle.

13. The method of claim 6 wherein said target is rearward of said driven vehicle.

14. The method of claim 6 further comprising the steps of:

determining a side distance from a second target to said driven vehicle;

determining whether a side distance is less than a predetermined side distance threshold; and

determining said cooperative blending factor parameter as a function of said side distance; and

determining said anti-lock braking in response to using said cooperative blending factor parameter as a function of said side distance.

15. The method of claim 14 wherein said step of determining a side distance is a function of a distance between said driven vehicle and said second target.

16. The method of claim 14 wherein said step of determining said side distance is a further function of a rate at which said side distance changes between said second target and said driven vehicle.

17. A vehicle control system comprising:

an adaptive speed control system that monitors a speed of at least one target in relation to a driven vehicle; and

a braking control system operating in an anti-lock braking control state for enhancing vehicle stability;

wherein said adaptive speed control system provides speed data to said braking control system for determining a secondary braking control strategy.

18. The vehicle control system of claim 17 further comprising a secondary proximity sensing system.

19. The vehicle control system of claim 18 wherein said secondary proximity sensing system includes side proximity sensors.

20. The vehicle control system of claim 18 wherein said secondary proximity sensing system includes rear proximity sensors.

21. The vehicle control system of claim 18 wherein said secondary proximity sensing system includes front corner proximity sensors.
