1. A method of classifying data, comprising:
- installing a data classification agent on a computer system, wherein the data classification agent classifies data stored on the computer system according to characteristics of the data;
classifying data using the data classification agent installed on the computer system;
populating a metabase with data classified by the data classification agent; and
performing a data management operation on the data based on the classifications of the data.

Abstract
Systems and methods for data classification to facilitate and improve data management within an enterprise are described. The disclosed systems and methods evaluate and define data management operations based on data characteristics rather than data location, among other things. Also provided are methods for generating a data structure of metadata that describes system data and storage operations. This data structure may be consulted to determine changes in system data rather than scanning the data files themselves.

10. A computer-readable media encoded with instructions for controlling a computer system to operate as a data classification agent, by a method comprising:
-
identifying data stored within a data store;
determining one or more classifications that describe the stored data, wherein the classifications describe characteristics of the data, and wherein at least some of the classifications are not stored with the data and are based on information about an application that generated the stored data;
creating metadata containing information about the stored data including the determined one or more classifications; and
storing the metadata in a non-volatile storage device. - View Dependent Claims (11, 12, 13, 14)

15. A system for classifying data, comprising:
-
a data store containing multiple data objects generated by one or more applications;
multiple data classification agents configured to classify the multiple data objects into at least one of multiple data classifications, wherein the data classifications categorize the data based on characteristics related to the use of the data; and
a metabase update component configured to store metadata describing the multiple data objects and the at least one of multiple data classifications for each data object in a metabase. - View Dependent Claims (16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22)

23. A system for classifying application data, comprising:
-
a means for determining an application that created a particular data object;
a means for parsing certain data within the data object to identify a structure of the certain data;
a means for assigning one or more data classifications to the parsed data; and
a means for storing the structure of the data and the one or more assigned data classifications as metadata describing the data object. - View Dependent Claims (24, 25, 26, 27, 28, 29, 30)
