Abstract

Disclosed are laminated glass articles and methods of making the same.

Claims

1. A glass article comprising (1) a glass core comprising at least one exposed surface and (2) a glass skin, wherein the skin is connected to the exposed surface of the core, wherein the skin comprises a glass composition comprising a strain point greater than 650°

C.

2. The article of claim 1, wherein the skin is adjacent to the core.

3. The article of claim 1, wherein the skin comprises glass having a strain point greater than 700°

C.

4. The article of claim 1, wherein the skin comprises glass having a liquidus viscosity of from 20,000 to 50,000 poises as measured by a gradient boat technique.

5. The article of claim 1, wherein the core comprises glass having a liquidus viscosity greater than 100,000 poises as measured by a gradient boat technique.

6. The article of claim 1, wherein the article has an average coefficient of thermal expansion less than 40×

C. over the temperature range of from 0°

C. to 300°

C.

7. The article of claim 1, wherein the skin is alkali free.

8. The article of claim 1, wherein the skin comprises an alkali-free glass comprising in mole percent on an oxide basis:

16.0 MgO + La₂O₃ 1.0–

C.; and

(d) the glass has a viscosity at the liquidus temperature greater than or equal to 85,000 poise.

9. The article of claim 1, wherein the skin comprises an alkali-free glass comprising in mole percent on an oxide basis:

11. The article of claim 1, wherein the article has a thermal compaction less than 20 ppm.

12. The article of claim 1, wherein the article can be used for an electronic application.

13. The article of claim 1, wherein the article can be used in a liquid crystal display.

14. The article of claim 1, wherein at least one exposed surface of the skin comprises a thin film transistor.

15. The article of claim 14, wherein the thin film transistor comprises poly-crystalline silicon.

16. A method for producing a glass article, comprising applying by fusion drawing to at least one exposed surface of a glass core a glass skin, wherein the skin comprises a strain point greater than 650°

C.

17. The article produced by the method of claim 16.
