Abstract

A method and apparatus for drilling a bone for receipt of a first and second bundle includes drilling a first tunnel in the bone. A locating member extending along a first axis from the tool may be positioned into the first tunnel. A cutting guide may be moved relative to the locating member to define a lateral offset between the locating member and the cutting guide. The cutting guide may then be located at a desired offset. The second tunnel may then be formed in the bone with a cutting member associated with the cutting guide, the cutting member having a second axis in a defined orientation relative to the first axis.

Claims

1. A method for drilling a bone for receipt of a first and second bundle, the method comprising:

drilling a first tunnel in the bone;

positioning a locating member extending from a tool along a first axis into the first tunnel; and

forming a second tunnel in the bone with a cutting member associated with a cutting guide, the cutting member having a second axis in a defined orientation relative to the first axis.

2. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

moving the cutting guide relative to the locating member to define a lateral offset between the locating member and the cutting guide; and

locating the cutting guide at a desired offset.

3. The method of claim 2 wherein moving the cutting guide includes:

translating the cutting guide in a direction along its axis.

4. The method of claim 3 wherein translating the cutting guide includes slidably translating the cutting guide selectively retaining the cutting member within a cannulated sleeve.

5. The method of claim 4 wherein a first perpendicular distance is defined from a point on the cutting member to the locating member, wherein translation of the cutting guide along its axis defines a second perpendicular distance from the point on the cutting member to the locating member and wherein the first and second distances are distinct.

6. The method of claim 2 wherein moving the cutting guide includes:

moving the cutting guide in a direction lateral to its axis.

7. The method of claim 6 wherein moving the cutting guide includes:

rotating a cutting guide selectively retaining the cutting member within a cannulated sleeve, wherein the cutting guide defines a guide axis offset from the second axis.

8. The method of claim 7 wherein a first perpendicular distance is defined from a point on the cutting member to the locating member, wherein moving the cutting guide in a direction lateral to its axis defines a second perpendicular distance from the point on the cutting member to the locating member and wherein the first and second distances are distinct.

9. The method of claim 2, further comprising:

passing the first bundle through one of the first and second tunnels;

passing the second bundle through the other tunnel; and

securing the first bundle and the second bundle to the bone.

10. The method of claim 9 wherein the bone comprises a femur.

11. The method of claim 10 wherein the first tunnel comprises one of an anterior medial tunnel and a posterior lateral tunnel and wherein the second tunnel comprises the other of the anterior medial tunnel and a posterior lateral tunnel.

12. The method of claim 11 wherein positioning a locating member extending from a tool into the first tunnel further comprises:

inserting the tool through an anterior medial portal.

13. The method of claim 12, further comprising drilling a third tunnel in a second bone and wherein positioning the locating member extending from a tool into the first tunnel comprises locating the tool through the third tunnel.

14. The method of claim 13 wherein the second bone comprises a tibia and wherein the third tunnel comprises a tibial tunnel.

15. A tool for preparing a second tunnel relative a first tunnel in a bone comprising:

a first longitudinal member having a locating member extending therefrom, said locating member adapted to be inserted into the first tunnel;

a second longitudinal member having a cutting member extending from a distal end; and

wherein the second longitudinal member is moveable relative the first longitudinal member to define a desired offset between the cutting member and the locating member.

16. The tool of claim 15 wherein said cutting member defines a cutting axis and said locating member defines a locating axis wherein said cutting axis and said locating axis define an angle.

17. The tool of claim 16 wherein said first longitudinal member defines a cannulated sleeve having a first axis and wherein said second longitudinal member defines a second axis and is selectively moveable within said cannulated sleeve.

18. The tool of claim 17 wherein a first perpendicular distance is defined from a point on said second longitudinal member to said locating member wherein movement of said second longitudinal member relative to said locating member defines a second perpendicular distance from said point on said second longitudinal member to said locating member and wherein said first and second distances are distinct.

19. The tool of claim 18 wherein said second longitudinal member is selectively translatable along said cutting axis within said cannulated sleeve.

20. The tool of claim 18 wherein said second axis is offset from said cutting axis.

21. The tool of claim 20 wherein said second longitudinal member is selectively rotatable within said first longitudinal member about said first axis.

22. The tool of claim 15 wherein the bone comprises a femur.

23. The tool of claim 22 wherein the first tunnel comprises one of an anterior medial tunnel and a posterior lateral tunnel and wherein the second tunnel comprises the other of said anterior medial tunnel and said posterior lateral tunnel.

24. A tool for preparing a second tunnel relative to a first tunnel in a bone comprising:

a locating member extending along a first axis and adapted to be positioned into the first tunnel;

a cutting guide extending along a second axis and adapted to form the second tunnel; and

wherein the first axis crosses the second axis.

25. The tool of claim 24 wherein the cutting guide is adjustably positioned to change a distance between said locating member and a tip of a cutting member extending from the cutting guide.

26. The tool of claim 25 wherein said cutting guide is selectively translatable along said second axis within a cannulated sleeve, wherein said locating member extends from said cannulated sleeve.

27. The tool of claim 25 wherein said cutting guide is selectively rotatable within a cannulated sleeve, said cutting member defining an offset axis relative to the second axis.

28. The tool of claim 25 wherein the bone comprises a femur.

29. The tool of claim 28 wherein the first tunnel comprises one of an anterior medial tunnel and a posterior lateral tunnel and wherein the second tunnel comprises the other of said anterior medial tunnel and said posterior lateral tunnel.

30. A method for drilling a bone for receipt of a first and second bundle, the method comprising:

drilling a first tunnel in the bone;

positioning a locating member extending from a tool along a first axis into the first tunnel;

moving a cutting guide relative to the locating member to define a, lateral offset between the locating member and the cutting guide;

locating the cutting guide at a desired offset; and

forming a second tunnel in the bone with a cutting member associated with the cutting guide, the cutting member having a second axis in a defined orientation to the first axis.

31. The method of claim 30 wherein moving the cutting guide includes:

translating the cutting guide in a direction along its axis.

32. The method of claim 31 wherein translating the cutting guide includes slidably translating the cutting guide selectively retaining the cutting member within a cannulated sleeve.

33. The method of claim 31 wherein translating the cutting guide includes threadably advancing the cutting guide selectively retaining the cutting member within a cannulated sleeve.
