Abstract

The invention is directed to an implantable device, such as a stent, for delivering a therapeutic substance. The device includes a reservoir containing a therapeutic substance and an energy converter to cause the release of the substance.

Claims

1. A stent, comprising:

a stent body having a surface;

a coating disposed over the surface;

a carrier material suspended in the coating, the carrier material including a therapeutic substance releasably contained in the carrier material; and

an energy conversion material for causing the carrier material to release the therapeutic substance.

2. The stent of claim 1, wherein the energy conversion material is suspended in the coating.

3. The stent of claim 1, wherein the energy conversion material is contained within the carrier material.

4. The stent of claim 1, wherein the carrier material comprises a hydrogel.

5. The stent of claim 1, wherein the energy conversion material converts electromagnetic waves into heat.

6. The stent of claim 1, wherein the carrier material is a temperature sensitive hydrogel and can contract when exposed to a designated temperature such that the contraction of the hydrogel pumps the therapeutic substance out from the hydrogel.

7. A stent, comprising:

a stent body having a surface;

an energy conversion material attached to and protruding out of the surface; and

a carrier material, containing a therapeutic substance, disposed over the surface such that the energy conversion material, when activated, can force the therapeutic substance out from the carrier material.

8. The stent of claim 7, wherein the energy conversion material is configured to convert magnetic waves into thermal energy.
