Abstract

A personal health record communications network system including a document source for originating a healthcare information document associated with a patient wherein the document includes identifying elements of at least one of the patient and a document consumer. A sending agent, associated with the document source and in communication with the communications network, sends the document to an intended destination address associated with the document consumer. An intermediary server receives the healthcare information document based on the intended destination address and processes the healthcare information document based on at least a portion of the identifying elements. A receiving agent, associated with the document consumer and in communication with the communication network, receives the processed healthcare information document from the intermediary server.

Claims

1. A personal health record communications network system comprising:

a document source for originating a healthcare information document associated with a patient, the document including identifying elements of at least one of the patient and a document consumer,

a sending agent, associated with the document source and in communication with the communications network, for sending the document to an intended destination address associated with the document consumer,

an intermediary server for i) receiving the healthcare information document based on the intended destination address and ii) processing the healthcare information document based on at least a portion of the identifying elements, and

a receiving agent, associated with the document consumer and in communication with the communication network, for receiving the processed healthcare information document from the intermediary server.

2. The system of claim 1, wherein the processing includes testing the incoming document for compliance with a healthcare messaging standard.

3. The system of claim 1, wherein the processing includes storing a copy of the document for access by the patient.

4. The system of claim 1, wherein the processing includes updating a copy of the document on a wireless communications device associated with the patient.

5. The system of claim 1, wherein the processing includes displaying an on-line version of the document to obtain consent for further processing.

6. The system of claim 1, wherein the processing includes displaying an online version of the document to enable modifications of the document content.

7. The system of claim 1, wherein the processing includes maintaining a copy of the document for the purpose of responding to queries about its content.

8. The system of claim 1, wherein the processing includes encoding or modifying the identifying elements of the patient prior to passing the document to the receiving agent.

9. The system of claim 1, wherein the processing includes encoding or removing the information identifying the sending agent prior to passing the document to the receiving agent.

10. The system of claim 1, wherein the processing includes restricting access by the document consumer on the basis of a secret shared between the document source and the consumer.

11. The system of claim 10, wherein the processing includes communicating the shared secret to the document consumer via a network other than the communications network where the document is transported.

12. The system of claim 1, wherein the processing includes obscuring the identity of the sender while allowing the sending agent to alert and authorize the document consumer.

13. The system of claim 1, wherein the processing includes notifying the consumer via at least one of email and instant messaging without disclosing any private or identifying information of the patient.

14. A method for distributing personal health information comprising:

originating, from a document source, a healthcare information document associated with a patient, the document including identifying elements of at least one of the patient and a document consumer,

sending, from a sending agent, the document to an intended destination address associated with the document consumer,

receiving, at an intermediary server, the healthcare information document based on the intended destination address,

processing, at the intermediary server, the healthcare information document based on at least a portion of the identifying elements, and

receiving, at a receiving agent, the processed healthcare information document from the intermediary server.

15. The method of claim 14, wherein the processing includes testing the incoming document for compliance with a healthcare messaging standard.

16. The method of claim 14, wherein the processing includes storing a copy of the document for access by the patient.

17. The method of claim 14, wherein the processing includes updating a copy of the document on a wireless communications device associated with the patient.

18. The method of claim 14, wherein the processing includes displaying an on-line version of the document to obtain consent for further processing.

19. The method of claim 14, wherein the processing includes displaying an online version of the document to enable modifications of the document content.

20. The method of claim 14, wherein the processing includes maintaining a copy of the document for the purpose of responding to queries about its content.

21. The method of claim 14, wherein the processing includes encoding or modifying the identifying elements of the patient prior to passing the document to the receiving agent.

22. The method of claim 14, wherein the processing includes encoding or removing the information identifying the sending agent prior to passing the document to the receiving agent.

23. The method of claim 14, wherein the processing includes restricting access by the document consumer on the basis of a secret shared between the document source and the consumer.

24. The method of claim 23, wherein the processing includes communicating the shared secret to the document consumer via a network other than the communications network where the document is transported.

25. The method of claim 14, wherein the processing includes obscuring the identity of the sender while allowing the sending agent to alert and authorize the document consumer.

26. The method of claim 14, wherein the processing includes notifying the consumer via at least one of email and instant messaging without disclosing any private or identifying information of the patient.
