Abstract

A software and/or hardware facility for scoring the quality of traffic to a site accessible via the Internet or other network. The facility extracts data from one or more data logs that are obtained from a publisher, advertiser, or third party. A multi-factor analysis in the form of a rule set is applied by the facility to the data. The analysis of the data identifies agent actions that are desirable to a publisher, advertiser, or third party. The facility generates a relative score for each agent action. The score may be used to assess the quality of traffic received by a network site. Lower scores are indicative of traffic having little value, whereas higher scores are indicative of traffic having greater value. The score may be provided to an advertising network and used to charge a variable amount for advertisements based on the quality of traffic that the advertisements receive.

Claims

1. A system for billing for advertisements displayed on a network site based on a quality of traffic associated with the network site, the system comprising:

an analysis component for analyzing one or more parameters associated with an agent interaction with a network site and characterizing a quality of the agent interaction with the network site based on the one or more parameters;

a scoring component for receiving the quality of the agent interaction with the network site from the analysis component and creating a non-binary score related to the quality of the agent interaction; and

a billing component for receiving the non-binary score from the scoring component and charging an advertiser an amount for advertising on the network site, wherein the amount charged to the advertiser is based in part on the non-binary score associated with the agent interaction with the network site.

2. The system of claim 1, wherein the network site is part of an advertising network.

3. The system of claim 1, wherein at least one of the one or more parameters associated with an agent interaction with a network site is related to a click by the agent on an advertisement.

4. The system of claim 1, wherein at least one of the one or more parameters associated with an agent interaction with a network site is related to viewing of an advertisement by the agent.

5. The system of claim 1, wherein at least one of the one or more parameters associated with an agent interaction with a network site is derived from a server log.

6. The system of claim 1, wherein the advertiser is charged a higher rate for a higher score and a lower rate for a lower score.

7. The system of claim 6, wherein the amount charged to the advertiser is calculated on a per agent basis.

8. The system of claim 6, wherein the amount charged to the advertiser is calculated on an aggregate number of agents basis.

9. The system of claim 1, wherein the advertiser is not charged for advertising on the network site if the non-binary score does not exceed a certain score.

10. The system of claim 1, wherein the amount charged to the advertiser is for an advertisement presented to the agent during the agent interaction with the network site.

11. The system of claim 1, wherein the amount charged to the advertiser is based on the non-binary score of a plurality of agent interactions with the network site.

12. The system of claim 1, wherein the scoring component further normalizes the non-binary score to fall within a standard range.

13. A method of billing for advertisements displayed on a network site based on the quality of traffic associated with the network site, the method comprising:

analyzing one or more parameters associated with an agent interaction with a network site and characterizing a quality of the agent interaction with the network site based on the one or more parameters;

determining a non-binary score related to the quality of the agent interaction; and

charging an advertiser an amount for advertising on the network site, wherein the amount charged to the advertiser is based in part on the non-binary score associated with the agent interaction with the network site.

14. The method of claim 13, wherein the network site is part of an advertising network.

15. The method of claim 13, wherein at least one of the one or more parameters associated with an agent interaction with a network site is related to a click by the agent on an advertisement.

16. The method of claim 13, wherein at least one of the one or more parameters associated with an agent interaction with a network site is related to a viewing of an advertisement by the agent.

17. The method of claim 13, wherein at least one of the one or more parameters associated with an agent interaction with a network site is derived from a server log.

18. The method of claim 13, wherein the advertiser is charged a higher rate for a higher score and a lower rate for a lower score.

19. The method of claim 18, wherein the amount charged to the advertiser is calculated on a per agent basis.

20. The method of claim 18, wherein the amount charged to the advertiser is calculated on an aggregate number of agents basis.

21. The method of claim 13, wherein the advertiser is not charged for advertising on the network site if the non-binary score does not exceed a certain score.

22. The method of claim 13, wherein the amount charged to the advertiser is for an advertisement presented to the agent during the agent interaction with the network site.

23. The method of claim 13, wherein the amount charged to the advertiser is based on the non-binary score of a plurality of agent interactions with the network site.

24. The method of claim 13, wherein determining the non-binary score further comprises normalizing the non-binary score to fall within a standard range.
