Abstract

A surgical stapling device. The device comprises an end effector that comprises an anvil having a staple forming surface defining a plurality of staple forming pockets. A first quantity of the plurality of staple forming pockets has a first depth and a second quantity of the plurality of staple forming pockets has a second depth. The first depth is greater than the second depth.

Claims

1. A surgical stapling device comprising an end effector that comprises an anvil having a staple forming surface defining a plurality of staple forming pockets, wherein a first quantity of the plurality of staple forming pockets has a first depth and a second quantity of the plurality of staple forming pockets has a second depth, wherein the first depth is greater than the second depth.

2. The surgical stapling device of claim 1, wherein the end effector comprises a staple cartridge, wherein the staple cartridge comprises a plurality of staples facing the staple forming surface of the anvil such that each staple forming pocket is aligned with a prong of one of the staples.

3. The surgical stapling device of claim 1, wherein the staple cartridge further comprises a plurality of staple drivers, each staple driver for driving one of the staples against the staple forming surface of the anvil when the staple driver is actuated.

4. The surgical stapling device of claim 1, wherein the anvil defines at least two rows of the staple forming pockets, wherein the staple forming pockets of the first row have the first depth and the staple forming pockets of the second row have the second depth.

5. The surgical stapling device of claim 1, wherein the anvil defines at least four parallel rows of the staple forming pockets, wherein the staple forming pockets of the two outer rows have the first depth and the staple forming pockets of the two inner rows have the second depth.

6. The surgical stapling device of claim 1, wherein the anvil is circular and defines at least two rings of concentric staple forming pockets.

7. The surgical stapling device of claim 5, wherein the staple forming pockets of an outer ring of the at least two rings have the first depth and the staple forming pockets of an inner ring of the at least two rings have the second depth.

8. The surgical stapling device of claim 1, wherein the end effector further comprises a cutting instrument for cutting tissue clamped in the end effector.

9. The surgical stapling device of claim 1, further comprising:

a shaft assembly connected to the end effector; and

a handle assembly connected to the shaft assembly.

12. The surgical stapling device of claim 1, wherein the end effector comprises a staple cartridge, wherein the staple cartridge comprises a plurality of staples facing the anvil such that each staple forming pocket is aligned with a prong of one of the staples.

17. The surgical stapling device of claim 1, further comprising:

a shaft assembly connected to the end effector; and

a handle assembly connected to the shaft assembly.

10. A surgical stapling device comprising an anvil, wherein the anvil comprises:

a compliant material portion defining a first plurality of staple forming pockets; and

a non-compliant material portion defining a second plurality of staple forming pockets, wherein the material of the compliant material portion is more compliant than the material of the non-compliant material portion.

11. The surgical stapling device of claim 10, wherein the anvil defines at least two rows of the staple forming pockets, wherein the staple forming pockets of the first row are formed in the compliant material portion of the anvil and the staple forming pockets of the second row are formed in the non-compliant material portion of the anvil.

13. A surgical stapling device comprising an end effector that comprises:

an anvil having a staple forming surface;

an elongate channel having sidewalls and a stepped lower surface defining an opening, the stepped lower surface comprising a raised portion and a lowered portion;

a staple cartridge disposed in the opening of the channel such that the staple cartridge faces the anvil when the anvil is in a closed position, wherein the staple cartridge comprises;

a plurality of staples; and

first and second pluralities of staple drivers, wherein each staple driver supports at least one staple and drives the at least one staple into the staple forming surface of the anvil when the staple driver is actuated, and wherein the first plurality of staple drivers are on the raised portion of the stepped lower surface of the channel and the second plurality of staple drivers are on the lowered portion of the stepped lower surface of the channel.

14. The surgical stapling device of claim 13, further comprising a cartridge tray between the staple cartridge and the channel.

15. The surgical stapling device of claim 13, wherein the staple drivers of the first and second plurality of staple drivers have the same height.

16. The surgical stapling device of claim 13, wherein the end effector further comprises a cutting instrument for cutting tissue clamped in the end effector.

18. A surgical stapling device comprising an end effector that comprises:

an anvil having a staple forming surface;

an elongate channel having sidewalls and a lower surface defining an opening, wherein the lower surface comprises a compliant material portion and a non-compliant material portion, wherein the compliant material portion is more compliant than the non-compliant material portion;

a staple cartridge disposed in the opening of the channel such that the staple cartridge faces the anvil when the anvil is in a closed position, wherein the staple cartridge comprises;

a plurality of staples; and

first and second pluralities of staple drivers, wherein each staple driver supports at least one staple and drives the at least one staple into the staple forming surface of the anvil when the staple driver is actuated, and wherein the first plurality of staple drivers are on the compliant material portion of the channel and the second plurality of staple drivers are on the non-compliant material portion of the channel.

19. The surgical stapling device of claim 18, wherein the staple drivers of the first and second plurality of staple drivers have the same height.

20. The surgical stapling device of claim 18, wherein the end effector further comprises a cutting instrument for cutting tissue clamped in the end effector.

21. The surgical stapling device of claim 18, further comprising:

a shaft assembly connected to the end effector; and

a handle assembly connected to the shaft assembly.
