Abstract

An integrated fuel cell unit (10) includes an annular array (12) of fuel cell stacks (14), an annular cathode recuperator (20), an annular anode recuperator (22), a reformer (24), and an anode exhaust cooler (26), all integrated within a common housing structure (28).

Claims

1. A fuel cell unit comprising:

a plurality of angularly spaced fuel cell stacks arranged to form a ring-shaped structure about a central axis, each of the fuel cell stacks having a stacking direction extending parallel to the central axis; and

an unperforated fuel reformer which is located in a middle of the ring shaped structure and which is surrounded by the fuel cell stacks.

2. The fuel cell unit of claim 1 wherein each of the stacks has a rectangular cross section.

3. The fuel cell unit of claim 1 wherein the reformer is exposed to radially inward faces of the fuel cell stacks to receive radiant heat therefrom.

4. The fuel cell unit of claim 1 wherein the plurality of angularly spaced fuel cell stacks comprise three or more angularly spaced fuel cell stacks.

5. The fuel cell unit of claim 1 wherein the fuel cell stacks comprise solid oxide fuel cell stacks.

6. The fuel cell unit of claim 1 wherein the reformer comprises an unperforated tube which extends parallel to the central axis.

7. The fuel cell unit of claim 1 wherein:

each fuel cell stack comprises a reformed fuel inlet located at one end of the stack; and

a reformed fuel outlet of the reformer is connected to the reformed fuel inlet of each fuel cell stack.

8. A fuel cell unit comprising:

an annular array of fuel cell stacks surrounding a central axis, with each of the fuel cell stacks having a stacking direction extending parallel to the central axis; and

an unperforated fuel reformer which is located in a middle of the annular array and which is surrounded by the fuel cell stacks.

9. The fuel cell unit of claim 8 wherein each of the stacks has a rectangular cross section.

10. The fuel cell unit of claim 8 wherein the reformer is exposed to radially inward faces of the fuel cell stacks to receive radiant heat therefrom.

11. The fuel cell unit of claim 8 wherein the array of fuel cell stacks comprises three or more fuel cell stacks surrounding the central axis.

12. The fuel cell unit of claim 8 wherein the fuel cell stacks comprise solid oxide fuel cell stacks.

13. The fuel cell unit of claim 8 wherein the reformer comprises an unperforated tube which extends parallel to the central axis.

14. The fuel cell unit of claim 8 wherein:

each fuel cell stack comprises a reformed fuel inlet located at one end of the stack; and

a reformed fuel outlet of the reformer is connected to the reformed fuel inlets of each fuel cell stack.

15. A method of operating fuel cell unit comprising an annular array of fuel cell stacks surrounding a central axis, with each of the fuel cell stacks having a stacking direction extending parallel to the central axis, and a fuel reformer which is located in a middle of the annular array and which is surrounded by the fuel cell stacks, the method comprising:

providing an unreformed fuel into the reformer,

passing the unreformed fuel through the reformer to form a reformed fuel; and

providing the reformed fuel into each of the fuel cell stacks from one end of each fuel cell stack.

16. The method of claim 15 wherein the reformed fuel is not provided into the fuel cell stacks through sides of each fuel cell stack which are parallel to the central axis.

17. The method of claim 15 wherein the reformer comprises an unperforated tube which extends parallel to the central axis and the step of passing comprises passing the unreformed fuel through the reformer substantially parallel to the central axis.

18. The method of claim 15 wherein:

the reformer is exposed to radially inward faces of the fuel cell stacks to receive radiant heat therefrom;

the array of fuel cell stacks comprises three or more fuel cell stacks surrounding the central axis; and

the fuel cell stacks comprise solid oxide fuel cell stacks.

19. The method of claim 15 wherein the fuel comprises methane and the step of forming the reformed fuel comprises using steam methane reformation to form a hydrogen containing reformed fuel.
